what if you just rotated the red shape around while persisting? The remaining white area should be the optimal engine shape

Well to be honest I have never "learnt" trigonometry like that in school at all, most of them are just created through trial and error and some knowledge of how different components of an equation would correlate to motions in a graph. I believe basic high school trigs can get you started very well, and if you want to go further I'm sure there are great university courses you can take online for free like Coursera :)
