Bryson is one of my favorites after finally getting to hear him speak for himself. He comes off as aloof but he is an amazing athlete who cares about his craft but is not so aloof that he can not be critical of himself or enjoy himself. I'm really glad I got to know him and think he's one of the most trasparent members of the PGA tour. Kudos to you guys for allowing him to show off a little more of who he is. Well done.

The basic rule you learn when starting to play golf is that when you hear FORE, you duck and put your hands on your head. It's the first thing i teach my students when we go out on the course. but so many people, 54 handicap to 10 hdcp, you yell FORE, and they just look up to the sky "where is the ball coming from" and then they get hit and get mad. Do not scatter or start running. Duck and put your hands up your head en stay their for 7 sec. min.
@ocat1979

This, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone run away when there is an incoming ball, they just duck and put their hands over their heads. Not shouting because if the wind is a weak excuse also, you do have arms and can signal yeah?
@ndnd1671
@ndnd1671 2 жыл бұрын
@@ocat1979 Last couple of shots I've seen on tv people were scattering from someone yelling fore. They also do have volunteers with paddles at the tee to indicate where the ball is going for the spotters. Pretty much same thing as arm signal. If your at a tournament, near landing area's should always be watching during tee shot. Even tour players hit it sporadic on off days. Look at Phil, he hits all over the place on a good day

Ah stop it's complete horse shit. I like Bryson but that excuse is nonsense. Not shouting cause he genuinely doesn't think it'll reach is ok. I'll give him that. We've all done it but saying it's into the wind or he doesn't want them running into it...not buying it. From 300+ yards he cannot tell what someone can or cannot hear so he has a duty of care to make an effort to warn them. He doesn't. If someone does shout fore people do not scatter like you've thrown a grenade into a flock of birds, they duck and cover their head so that doesn't hold up either. He knows he's in the wrong and he's using these sort of wishy-washy excuses to justify his own wrong doing

Which tells me... how important the volunteers are, in watching every Tee Shot to pass on as quickly as the can, arrows, flags, colored markers to indicate the direction of the ball, at least, down 65 yds before and after the 300 yd marker. Where nobody in those ranges can even see the ball. . You really can’t see from that distance, the players, pointing in any direction. But you can see brightly colored indicators so the other volunteer on either side can quickly aid peoples view of the ball.

I used to not like Bryson but I decided to follow him at the Open on the Sunday this year. He could not have been more respectful to us fans out on the course and was even cracking jokes when deciding what club to hit off the tee. He’d get his 3 wood out and people would boo, so he’d go back and whip the driver out to big cheers. In terms of calling fore, he went a bit wayward on a few holes and when it was clear he might endanger someone, he called fore but one thing I didn’t realise is just how far he hits it and how up and down a lot of those courses are, it’s often impossible to tell if people are there. I guess the argument is “he should call fore if he doesn’t know for sure” but how many times have you been playing with your mates and not called coz you don’t think anyone is there but u get down to your hall and some angry men is shouting at you. We all have made that mistake, he’s not doing it because he doesn’t care, I’m certain of that Just my take

First, let me preface this by saying I'm a huge fan of your channel, but allow me to explain why I don't like the way you thumbnailed and titled this video. Its clickbait. It seems like every media outlet out there uses this technique, trying to get you to click on their video. Titling the video, "Why he doesn't shout FORE" is confirmation to so some that he never does. Which isn't true. If your just scrolling past the video, some might say, "ya f*** that guy" and continue on. You see it all the time with the media, and it's really disappointing. You're under no obligation to protect someone, and I'm really glad you asked this question, it's good and a justified one. However, this excerpt would be better received if it was titled, Bryson DeChambeau on yelling fore. Or, Why yelling fore is often pointless according to Bryson D. Anything with an absolute (never, always, doesn't) loses credibility. Now on your point, I disagree with Dechambeau on this and believe you should always yell fore. It's a gentlemen's game, and doing so is good etiquette. Cheers my friend. Congrats on 2mil!

Such a cop-out answer. If you “could be shouting fore on every shot”, that’s an issue. If the ball looks like it’s heading toward people, just yell fore and bare minimum point that direction so spectators can at least know to duck and cover. Why are we acting like yelling one word and pointing is some massive amount of effort?!? It’s better to be yell and be wrong then not yell and injure a spectator. Why is that so difficult?!? His first instinct was to deflect and point out that other golfers have hit people; reminds me of his interview where he decided that being called “brooksy” made him different like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. Dude, what?!?
@gohamm8629
@gohamm8629 2 жыл бұрын
@Matthew Vermeulen that’s why I said bare-minimum point with your driver to the direction it’s headed, since spectators will definitely be looking that direction. And if they really knew their yardages and “if the ball is actually placing spectators in danger” then no one would get hit when fore isn’t called. My whole point is shit happens, and if they were always right about whether their drive could hurt someone or not, this wouldn’t be an issue. We’ve seen plenty of golfers hit a wayward shot, not say fore or even point, and the ball land in the spectators/hit someone. Fans are the reason they get to play for millions and do what they love for a living; they deserve at least a “heads up” when a 200mph projectile is headed their direction.

people gotta remember that the golf ball is moving at about 20% the speed of sound. Most of us probably realized that sound had a maximum speed because of golf; seeing somebody hit a drive on a hole 200-300 yards away, hearing the crack of the ball a good second after seeing the ball leave the tee.

@RickShielsgolf why dance around the issue like a shy schoolgirl? Phrase it like “ok Bryson- here’s a chance to speak your side. Explain why you don’t yell fore.” Also- 1. if you are at a tournament to watch the players play, aren’t you watching arguably the most exciting player in golf on his tee shots? 2. Highlight bias- you can make anyone look any way you want if you dig up enough clips that show them in that light. At a rate of 72 holes a week (assuming cuts made) there is a LOT of material to source your non-fores from. You could make Jack Nicklaus look like a muni hacker if you string together every bad shot from his career, for example.

Here’s what I will say for his excuse of “if I don’t think it’s going to get there, they can’t hear me.” It’s a courtesy to yell because you have shown compassion for possibly hitting someone. It's not always into the wind though is it. The honest reason he doesn't shout fore is because he's in denial about the fact he's hit a poor shot. "It's impossible to do anything", no it isn't mate, just shout fore. If you're having to shout fore every tee shot then maybe you need to improve your accuracy off the tee? People are always saying "The traditionalists don't like him because he's pushing the boundaries", that may well be the case, but theres also a far larger group of people who don't like him simply because of the way he behaves and then makes out to always be the victim. There is a number of examples of this

I do think there are instances in which people aren’t going to hear you regardless of how loud you say it, but saying it isn’t going to cause people to run around in a panic, it will allow them time to cover their heads and turn away from the shot. Bryson gets a bad wrap, and like he said they feel awful when it happens, but it doesn’t hurt to say it, no one is above courtesy.

A group of students on the 7th tee, at the par 3 course I work on, teeing off. One lad hit a hook and the ball was heading at the 8th tee which had two players on it and in the loudest voice he shouted:- "HEADS UP". I pointed out to him that he was not playing football and the call should have been, Fore left. His friends and the two guys on the 8th just laughed.

I’m a massive fan of Bryson and thought the whole interview was great. On this though I thought his excuses were poor. To say people probably can’t hear it can’t be an excuse. Also the scattering of people, that just doesn’t make sense. It’s something to shout to protect people. It’s simple.

So true in relation to etiquette influencing amateurs. One more for lots of the players is running or climbing up the face of bunkers. PGA should really advise against forming bad habits in viewers- if Speith goes up the face of a bunker, why would a beginner assume this isn't etiquette?

This was a great interview Rick . Here is a idea to keep lazy spectators safe . You already have marshals down farways . Have a Marshal behind tee block and if a drive looks like it is a stray he then radios down fairway to the other marshal so they can call Fore . Not to hard to set up .

In theory that’s a good idea. We’re then relying on the Marshalls being on the ball (not literally) but you get what I mean?
@ivyfalls1
@ivyfalls1 2 жыл бұрын
I have marshaled on the 18th hole at the Tour Championship for years as well as other PGA events. What we do on the par 5 18th is that the marshal on the tee box has a yellow flag(like every other tournament) and he raises it, then points to where he sees the ball going. It’s a little tricky on that hole because it is a dog leg left and the marshals on the left side landing area cannot see the tee box due to trees so we rely on the marshals on the right side of the fairway to yell “LEFT!” so we can warn the fans on the left side. It would be nice to have radios and earpieces, but the flag system seems adequate. You are still relying on the one set of eyes at the tee box to warn the downfield marshals. I think it is more of golf etiquette for Bryson to yell “Fore."
@kenbrown2808
@kenbrown2808 2 жыл бұрын
have a second caddy, 300 yards down the fairway to watch the shot and yell if needed. all having a guy on radio behind the tee box will do is let the marshals know where to look for the injury. really, if they can't hear the driver, they're not going to be able to hear a yell.

There are guys behind the golfer as he drives with a paddle he holds aloft, if the ball deviates they signal which way usually. Would anyone 300-350 yards hear a shout of fore anyway? It's upto the fans to pay attention aswell.

I've been playing golf since last May, my mate has played for a while and was sure to explain course etiquette, being a newer golfer you can imagine I was calling fore quite often initially, one thing I definitely noticed is if I heard fore I'd often fine myself looking that direction and if I shouted it people would look in my direction which I think is an invitation to getting hit in the face but it's a natural instinct so I get what Bryson is saying
@Real28
@Real28 2 жыл бұрын
Also, when you're out golfing....you're golfing. You're not watching people. When you're at a tournament, you're watching. It's your job to be aware and be smart. I've been to several and you never turn your back to a tee box. And the sound of a driver will reach you before a fore, so it's never helped me. What I look for is the hand gesture to which side but even then, I'm usually watching so I track the ball.
@hick5y
@hick5y 2 жыл бұрын
I'm the opposite - if I hear fore my instinct is to face away and put a hand up to cover the back of my head. I can deal with a broken hand or ribs but yeah losing an eye or nut would suck. Maybe there needs to be emphasis on what to do when hearing fore instead of just saying it if you hit a shocker.

I don't always shout. For the simple reason he mentioned. People actually do run into the path of the ball. You just know where a ball is going to land, unless it's a shank, or a wild right, or blind landing spot. But if you can see the landing area, and the gap looks good from 250 yards away? It's pretty certain it's going to be a bigger gap when you get up there.
