The guys at stirlingkit.com sent me this awesome little engine to assemble and test, and let me tell you it was a lot of fun, it was like Lego but for adults (not that I am one haha still a youngster by heart). I always wanted something like this ever since I was a kid, and this was just perfect.

Can someone explain the concept of a hit-and-miss engine to me? It sounds like every second cycle is a power stroke to my inexpert ears, but what do I know?
@AJRestoration
@AJRestoration 4 ай бұрын
A hit-and-miss engine or Hit 'N' Miss is a type of stationary internal combustion engine that is controlled by a governor to only fire at a set speed. They are usually 4-stroke but 2-stroke versions were made. It was conceived in the late 19th century and produced by various companies from the 1890s through approximately the 1940s. The name comes from the speed control on these engines: they fire ("hit") only when operating at or below a set speed, and cycle without firing ("miss") when they exceed their set speed. This is as compared to the "throttle-governed" method of speed control. The sound made when the engine is running without a load is a distinctive "Snort POP whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh snort POP" as the engine fires and then coasts until the speed decreases and it fires again to maintain its average speed. The snorting is caused by the atmospheric intake valve used on many of these engines. Many engine manufacturers made hit-and-miss engines during their peak use-from approximately 1910 through the early 1930s when more modern designs began to replace them. Some of the largest engine manufacturers were Stover, Hercules, International Harvester (McCormick Deering), John Deere (Waterloo Engine Works), Maytag, and Fairbanks Morse. In the Canadian Atlantic Provinces, primarily in Newfoundland, these engines were known, in colloquial conversation, as "Make-and-Break" engines. The main usage here was to drive traditional skiff-style utility and fishing boats.

I didn't watch the whole video, but I stopped when I read the title of the instruction manual, identifying the item as a "4 stroke hit and miss engine". I don't see how it would be possible to be both a 4 stroke engine and still be a hit and miss engine. Depending on the load applied, the hit and miss will fire one time and then wait till the rpm's drop before firing again, while a 4 stroke engine will fire every other cycle of the crank/piston regardless of the load or rpm's. 💩
@AJRestoration
@AJRestoration 5 ай бұрын
Watch the video, because its both ;-)💩
@mikefule330
@mikefule330 4 ай бұрын
It's a 4 stroke engine in that it has the "suck squeeze bang blow" cycle like any other 4 stroke engine when it is under sufficient load. The difference is that instead of the speed being controlled by a throttle, a regulator makes it fire only when the revs drop below a set speed, so when it is not under load, it is effectively a 4 stroke engine with no ignition.
