Shell rot is restricted to the shell until it reaches a very advanced stage. Provided the infection remains limited to the shell, a lobster that doesn't get taken out by something while its shell is fucked will make a full recovery upon molting.

I've eaten plenty with shell rot. I'd be more concerned with the fact it's not displaying any signs of life. You don't want to eat a dead lobster. Shortly after they die, (not from cooking) the meat becomes toxic with ammonia.

If it has the word rot in it then I'm not eating it Edit: what I neglected to say is I was a commercial potter for years and I wouldn't eat shellfish with shell rot, test lobsters shell for firmness by a little squeeze as when they have their soft shells they get watery when boiled, test a cooked lobster by opening it's tail and it should flip back closed meaning it was alive when they cooked it, if the tail doesn't flip closed again then unless you caught it you don't know how long it was dead before they cooked it

I work for a Fishermans coop, and the meat is always fine when we cook up the rotted lobsters. It would have to be a very severe case of shell rot to damage the meat or to become inedible.

I had a seatbelt installed on my toilet so I can eat the shellrot lobsters that fisherman don't want and would normally throw out. I eat shell rot lobsters 3-5x a week. I have raging bloody diarrhea but I don't see why that's a problem. Bar Harbour, Mainer here.

Shell rot just means the lobster stopped molting so other than being an older lobster (in age, not old as in expired) there’s absolutely nothing different about the meat. The only thing, if anything, that I’d potentially worry about is can the shell harbor bad bacteria in that state, and would the boiling water not kill them/cook them out anyway?

This is what allegedly happened with the company that purchased Red Lobster. They had a large number of shrimp that was, let's say, not in good shape. They offloaded that shrimp through the restaurant.
