I bought an incredible Jaguar XF R at the Junk Auto Bank sale. It was sold super cheap because of an "engine knock" which was misdiagnosed and it is just a simple $20 part... This car is easily as good as the BMW M5, E63 and E55 AMG, and Audi RS7 if you compare how much they cost. Also make sure you check out the Jaguar XF Supercharged, it's nearly as good and even cheaper!

My XF has been trouble free for 1 year of abuse, only thing that's broken is a headlight and a clamp on the exhaust came loose after gutting the mid section, probably the shops fault, caused a horrible rattle, few twists of a screw driver and problem solved... I think most European cars are unreliable in the US because many people in the US do 20+k miles a year and often with barely any maintenance then wonder why they blow their engine, I think euro car engines are much more modern and technology filled and therefore are much more sensitive to maintenance and small defects cause bigger issues, US engines seem to be straight to the point, simple, boat loads of power and due to the simplistic nature, much more reliable and easy to fix when they do mess up

GM used these as well on their supercharged engines. The problem with the noise is that if the amount of play gets to be too large, and in your case, it sounds like it was very very close to that limit, the impellers inside the supercharger grind against each other and the entire thing comes apart. If you are lucky, the damage is small, usually valves (usually the edges get nicks in them from the metal shavings and some cylinder scoring) and the system bypasses the damaged part. Or it can send an inch piece of metal into a cylinder. IME, the replacement items are good for 40-60K miles, same as the original. They wear out and are a normal item to replace every 3-5 years. On this car, it's buried. On a GM, it's on the top of the engine and a 20 minute job.

Hey Sam, i used engine flush on a 2001 skoda octavia 1.8T (audi engine) that hat a lot of gunk build up, and a problem with the oil pressure. After pouring in the stuff you could hear the engine running quieter. I drained the oil, and filled op with quality synthetic oil and a friction modifier. The oil pressure problem was gone, that was over 6 years ago. I have used an engine flush for every oil change since then and the engine never made any problems again. The car is still used regularly by a family member and it runs better then when i got it.

Just to touch on the differences between the XF Supercharged and XFR. For pre-facelift XF-S models (2010 and 2011) it was mechanically identical to the XFR (i compared parts lists when I bought my SUpercharged) and for the facelifts, as far as I can tell, only the stock tire offered changed betweed it and the XFR. Most of what you got going for an R outside the extra 40HP was the sporty bolstered seats (available on XF "S" models and XFR in facelift only), an R badge on the gauges, infotainment, passenger dash panel, seats, and rear, 2 heat extractors on the hood, different front and rear fascia, and wheel design (both got 20" wheels as standard in the same width and offsets). Both have the same tuning capabilities and limitations (intercooler upgrades needed to breach 630Hp reliably, when to swap lower pulleys, the relative uselessness of changing the airboxes until 650+), the same 6HP ZF transmission, and the same E-Diff.

I've used Liqui Moly MoS2 Anti-Friction oil on a 2002 MB SLK and the engine stopped making rattle noises after sitting for a while (common issue on M111 engines). Not sure which "friction modifier" you had in mind, but this oil with MoS2 made a difference in my case.

Yep I use a fluid extractor to pump out the oil on my MB and the filter housing is on the top of the motor. That pump has paid for itself many times over and the time it saves me is incredible. I have the oil changed on the car in less than 20 minutes. Main thing is to run the motor for a bit before doing the change because the warm oil will flow far better when being extracted.

Re Friction modifiers: I daily drove an F350 with the 6.0 for a while (never had a single issue in 60k miles) and in my second winter with the truck, I started using a friction modifier. Made a world of difference on winter cold starts. It ran way smoother and quieter than it used to on those sub-10°F mornings

Sam I've used liquimoly mso2 antifricton with great success, it's not a huge difference as the oil is the main component and has all the detergents and friction modifiers. But the mso2 is great stuff!!!! But engine flush is not generally recomended and especially with small passages inside the engine, use some atf in the oil, drive a few 100 miles, then change oil again. It will slowly dissolve the gunk but the flush will break off chunks quickly and can clog more than it unclogs

@Jim Hammill Ford era Jags and beyond are pretty reliable. I love motorkote!!!! I also have a Honda prelude that I used 2 kinds of engine flush on and it cleaned it really well had so much sludge in the engine. Motorkote I use it in transmission and engine and power steering. I love it, it's made a difference in a PT cruiser I had big time.

Love these jags! I'm a tow truck driver and, a lot of the newer (2016-20) have some silly electrical issues, but I've driven them off my bed and into the shop and man do they feel smooth! Sound AMAZING stock! SOOOOO COMFY! Plenty of visibility! And as you've already mentioned, quite affordable! It's like if Cadillac made a baby with BMW and it came out with Jag!

I own 2 Land Rovers and Ive learned that all JLR products have certain gremlins that if you are mechanically inclined you can fix them and have an awesome machine. Most people are just scared of them because they hear about or experience horror stories after things go too long unfixed causing the $12000 engine (+labor) to explode. The air suspension is very simple to fix if you have a good diagnostic tool but the dealers charge thousands. If you are gonna pay someone to work on them run away. If you can do it then they are cheap and absolutely awesome. That 5.0 supercharged is a silky smooth monster.

I've used seafoam before oil changes, and changed out with wix filters and Schaeffer's with liquid-moly for years. We had to get our '16 Hyundai a new motor in October, but it was covered even at 124,500 miles.

The shifting knob failed multiple times on my dads here in the uk apparently at the time the road side assist said it was common and Jaguar would not replace it under warranty

Should've replaced that outlet pipe assembly and the rear crossover pipe while you were in there. Very common to leak coolant. Also saw you taking the symposer bracket off... you can pull the symposer out with the charger with just two plugs being released. No need to fight the three t30s off the back.

Here in England the mk1 Jag xf did have an issue with the gear shifter knob not coming up and yes you're stranded if it does. Some car's were recalled. The xf is a comfortable cruiser and I love mine.

I used a friction modifier I got off a traveling salesman back in the early eighties when gas prices skyrocketed. I put it in a '64 Pontiac Bonneville and immediately the engine idle sped up. That saved me from trying to figure out how to set the idle on the Carter AFB carb. Sold it to a relative who ended up spinning a main bearing.

@@bgardiner3354 I don’t need to own one. I’ve heard enough stories to know what it’s like owning one. Just because you got 1 that is good, doesn’t mean the thousands of other people haven’t had tons of problems. There’s no arguing that they break prematurely and the cost of repair is ridiculous. If you have the money to repair it and keep it in the road, more power to you. The average car owner would be wise to stay far away from Jaguar, bmw, pretty much any European brand

I have used the BG product line. My indy MB mechanic suggested their friction modifiers because of their warranty on engine failure. I have used the flush and it, for sure, cleaned out a clogged lifter on my Silverado. No more tick tick tick. Not a bad idea every 20,000 miles. I still change the oil every 4,000 miles or so because I have heard way too many stories from mechanics that say the extended intervals are baloney. Oil is relatively cheap. Repairs aren't.

Best I've found is Motor Kote. Several years ago a truck driver told me it would stop the lifter tick on my 5.4 Triton expedition. Bought a quart , put it in and before I got out of the parking lot it quieted down. That was at 150k miles, it's got over 400k now. 1 quart every third oil change. Also used it in my last Kenworth, when I sold it , it had 1.9 million miles, no engine issues on a C15 Acert...on that one was 1 gallon every third oil change.

Motorkote is great stuff as a insurance, another good one is Lucas oil stabilizer, its real thick (basically a gear oil 75-90 like thick goop), when i managed a lube shop there was a fleet of heavily abused trucks that'd use it every oil change, made the top end quite as new (they were rough af engines, near death) and they swore by the stuff.
