Hi, 4 year L322 2011 Ranger Rover HSE owner here. Mine is almost identical to yours. In my first year of ownership, as the fourth owner with 88k miles, I had to replace the engine with a used one for $10k parts and labour; blown head gasket. The problem with these gorgeous depreciating vehicles--buyers love them because they're cheap, but no one honours the cost of ownership. I change my oil every 4k miles and baby it. 147k miles on the clock now. It has a timeless look and is terrific for snow and long trips. I wish you the best and I subscribed.

Valve's hitting pistons has a much different noise. It'll sound like coins being crushed in the engine and it's every valve on whatever cam is being out of time so it's VERY noisy. Jumped timing enough to cause all my valves in my engine to kiss then hit and bend them all once timing jumped even more. Definitely sounds more like it's the timing chain slapping around.
@F06M6
@F06M6 2 жыл бұрын
Not body off on these, only on the L320/L319 Sport and LR3/LR4. Engine comes out the top, or front subframe can be dropped. Easier through the top. That noise sounds like the chain slapping the block. Stick your teshlong down the oil cap and look for chain machined aluminium. Also look for slack in the chain at the oil cap. There should be absolutely none, barely moveable.

with the gas they have today, it has ethanol which basically absorbs the water and pulls it up into the fuel eventually causing phase separation which would cause the fuel to look like brine. so the days of fuel floating on water unless its diesel are pretty much over. the only exception to this would be recreational fuel which has no ethanol or if water was just introduced to the gas recently. I only know this because I used to build gas stations. hope this helps, also diesel has the ability to grow algae and rust can develop in todays diesel fuels on bare metals.

I have no idea what "rec fuel" is but despite your assertion it doesn't exist I can assure you I am perfectly able to buy 100% pure gasoline with no ethanol in it, in both 87 and 91 octane, at most normal gas stations in my area (The Dakota's). It does cost 30-50 cents more a gallon but you're free to purchase it right off the pump.

As good as it sounds (before the knock)--- I think you would be fine to just do the timing belt change and run it. It might burn a little oil--- but at least there's no hole in the piston. I think it's worth the gamble--- as long as you don't have a dead cylinder on your compression check.
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 2 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly! I'm probably going to test the compression today, so we'll see what happens!
@calholli
@calholli 2 жыл бұрын
@@WaldosWorld yeah.. Even if you have bad compression on one cylinder, but there's no hole in the piston or valves-- maybe worse case scenario -- you might need to pull the heads and put on new head gaskets if they have gone bad too. Which isn't that much more work once you already have the front all torn apart. --- so that will be a decision that you'll want to think about while you're there. But if compression is good on all cylinders-- I think a new timing chain and water pump would squeeze another 100k miles out of it easy... You might need a new starter and alternator along the way, ect.. But that's to be expected. If the air rids fail completely, you can convert them to regular shocks for fairly reasonable price, compared to fixing the air rides. So there's still options there. Nice find!

By the time a valve hits a piston you would have correlation codes or misfires or even backfiring out the intake etc and it would barely run if at all, I bet its a broken chain guide causing the chain to be loose and its just slapping around in there a bit. The indentation on the piston has alot of carbon buildup on it meaning its likely not recent. The scoring will likely cause oil consumption and that's usually a worn piston skirt or piston skirt defect and will have a rattle noise when cold known as piston slap.

Because let's be real here , those engines were not known for reliability so that's still a factor if you do manage to fix it , the wealth of common issues still will plaque you. You can make some pretty serious horsepower on a bone stock lc9 block and be completely reliable. It maybe be more common of a conversion than you think, I believe painless wiring makes a plug and play harness. Just sold mine, 2008 v8 diesel. 200k miles on it. I owned it for 6 years. During the 5 minutes when everything works, it is a great vehicle, the rest of the time... Oh well. Just don't make this your only driving option in your garage.

I am jealous of you hearing what you paid for this!! i guess, seeing all that, it is worth a rebuild and make some money out of it by reselling. I am guessing its a blown up headgasket, since the knocking sound is very distinct. good luck bro!!

Hi Waldo. I admit, I don't know this engine at all, but I DO know that many piston crowns have an indent for the valve(s). Given that the valve itself didn't look (shiny), like there had been any contact, and indeed the indent in the piston also looked 'dirty', I'd say that is not the issue. Good luck with whatever it is. Regards Mark in the UK

I took the RR vogue onto an army course made for MERCEDES UNIMOG, ETC, it lost a few bits fro front & rear, but plastic replacement parts, except the rear reg plate. Needless to say the vehicle performed better than expected in a somewhat almost impossible drive, but what impressed me most was the level of comfort afforded in such rough terrain.

Last year I purchased my dream car… 2021 RangeRover sport straight from the Dealership. I was happily driving home excited to show my wife & just then… the engine started aggressively knocking & the car totally cut out! luckily had LR warranty as it needed a complete engine replacement (£14.5k) Once the engine was fixed, the car had non stop electrical issues. Spent more time at LR repair garage than my garage! Never again. Now I’ve got a tesla & life is good 😎
