After over 17 years as a BMW master technician and owning a BMW shop for 5 years, I finally got my first M car! Time to breath some life back into this old girl and make it a beautiful trackable M!

It’s a free country and you can do whatever you want to the car. In my opinion I would keep it stock to the build sheet.

Congratulations on purchase, they are a very cool car. It'll be interesting to see your progress over time. I've owned numerous BMW's and had to attend to many of the classic issues, such as oil pump housing, cracking coolant tanks, broken rear springs, coils, etc., etc. So, it'll be interesting to see what you find with this M3. Best of luck!

That's not delaminating it's clear coat, no? Have pristine 2011 manual, 2nd owner, 56k miles, 6 yrs now, still love it. Not a daily usually, only done fluids, filters and tires.

This is great man! I got an e92 M3 on the way too! Currently driving a 328i e92. That being said, I’d like to ask a question: I’m aware of the infamous rod bearings and throttle actuators on the M3.. are there any other failure points, or could the aforementioned be avoided? Having an engineering mindset, it’s weird to think that BMW would make bearings that can go bad as early as 40k miles

When buying a used one, you never know how it was driven. Did the previous owner let the car warm up before hammering on it, did they use the right oil, did then actually change the oil on time.... There are so many variables with a used car. The actuators are very random from my experience. I've seen the last well over 100,000 miles and some only last 50,000. I feel like it's cars that sit a lot that have the most problems. Also, the ones that are babied. BMW's love to be beat on. I am going to be doing and experimenting with LiquMoly CeraTec on mine after I replace the bearings.

I’ve heard you can get floating 2 piece rotors to help with the brake fade

I don't track which is where brake limits show up, but I love the pedal feel and shutting it down from triple digits a couple times in succession, hard as possible, betrays no weakness. For road use it's good to go.

Awesome purchase!! E92’s have got to be one of the best looking cars ever created. It’s not every day you get the chance to ask a BMW master tech something, so here goes! I’m currently in the market for a n54 powered 35i vehicle, or a n63 powered 50i. I’m aware of how maintenance heavy these engines are and have money set aside for that. My question is, is there a clear winner when it comes to reliability between the 2? My goal is a 500ish horsepower car. Im also aware the n54 would require more work and modification to reach that number.

My honest opinion is if you aren't going to actually track the car on a regular basis, 500hp is useless. Just buy any N55, slap some bolt ons on it, and call it good. That is by far the most reliable option. Yes, the N54 is a beast, but it comes with a heavy cost, and as soon as you start to mod them, that cost goes up. The N63 and N63TU have very high maintenance costs and many, many known internal and external failures. So far, the N63R seems to be holding up a little better but also very high maintenance costs. The N55 or B58 are proving to be extremely reliable, and both have plenty of power for any road car that isn't going to go to the track. If you are planning on racing it and have plenty of extra cash, go N54, not N63.

@@GetToLiving I very much appreciate you taking the time to reply. If I could bother you with 1 more question, about how much power can the n55 handle comfortably without making it a ticking time bomb or opening up the engine? There are a lot of varying opinions on this on forums, but none are from people with your expertise on the subject. Just subscribed too. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the m3!

Hey brother, ended up grabbing a n54 powered e90 and I’m having some issues. (Who would’ve guessed, right? 😂) But it’s going limp mode, wipers come on, erratic speedometer, and throws a bunch of codes at once (airbag, abs, transmission fault, etc.) has to be some sort of electrical issue. I swapped out the battery which fixed it for about a day and then the same issues came back. Alternator was reading proper voltage and seems to be working fine. Any ideas where I could start looking next? Lol

I was disappointed in that too. I paid $35k for mine 6 yrs ago, single owner, 45k miles, stock, pristine, manual, comp. Haven't looked in a while but think it's still worth at least that much.
