Hi Matt. I had my 2 EGR valves replaced on my Discovery 3 TDV6 (same engine) recently here in Switzerland and the 600GBP quote you received for each valve is way too much. An original LR one shoud be around 300 GBP, VAT included, and you can get for half that price an OEM spec Valeo branded EGR with all seals included. Check LR Direct, Rimmer Bros, LR Parts or Advanced Factors. (All UK based retailers)

Even if you replace the EGR valves (which fixes it) and service it and tidy it up for the forecourt you’re in to around 3K inc purchase price. You might find someone daft enough to buy it for £3500 with 182,000 on the clock but then there is always the possibility of a phone call a week later complaining about the turbo blowing up. Or any number of other issues. Sell it for parts Matt. £1500. No come backs and 500 dabs in your pocket.

A couple of years ago we bought a 2007 4.2l Vogue supercharged. Only a quarter of a million miles on the clock! Probably spent £1500 on it but it seems perfectly reliable, drives like new and is supremely comfortable and useful. Sure, a bit heavy on fuel but compared to buying something on HP or lease, it's a no brainer. If we get another year or two out of it I'm very happy.

Had the exact same issue with mine (which I’d have sold you for £1,000 and is a much better example on 186k miles 🤣… but I’ve also owned it since 2013). I would go for an EGR delete kit (£20-£30 off eBay/LRParts etc) and try it, worst case you’re doing the valves anyway but best case, and in my case, it not only solved it, but was 💯 more responsive than ever before, passes the MOT, no fault codes thrown up and is MUCH more fuel efficient 34MPG on a motorway run! I fitted them myself, 40 min job start to finish. Great vid 👍🏼

There is a reason Range Rovers depreciate badly, and this video sums it all up. Beautifully designed vehicle, delight to drive, well appointed inside and out, let down by ridiculously over priced below average quality parts. These vehicles seem to get to a certain age and mileage where the faults and failures overwhelm most people, even if you think you are keeping on top of it the next eye watering bill will quickly be around the corner. When you read out the receipts the story unfolded, the owner got to the end of their patience with constant high cost repairs that they likely punched the infotainment display or threw something at it then abandined the money pit. Land Rover are doing themselves no favours, these vehicles are seen as worthless junk after a certain age as they are just not built to last with over priced parts and complex time consuming repairs, this is why they depreciate like a lead weight after a certain age and mileage, nobody wants them. It's a shame, lovely vehicles to drive, sit in and look at but not salvageable due to depreciation and cost of repair. Break it or scrap it, it may be a cheap fix but whoever buys it off you will hate you forever when the suspension airbags go or the ECU's fry. Lexus do not have these issues, but I would say BMW and Audi SUVs are just as expensive to maintain.

Definitely agree. Personally I’d have an X5 or X7 over any other SUV My granddads had his Range Rover for a few years. Went from 7 s classes to a 2014 vogue autobiography v8 to a 2018 vogue autobiography v8, endless problems He travels a lot so after a week of not driving the car will refuse to start Thousands are spent every month on repairs and maintenance However, most of the problems stem from not being driven on good motorway runs or barely doing 500 miles a year My uncle also has a Range Rover. autobiography with the 3.0 SDV6. Daily driven. Never had an issue. 60k miles on the clock. Owned since new. JLR specialist services and it’s been perfect. A lot better to own than his 2021 GLS which always felt lacking behind the wheel and on the inside Despite the problems my grandad faces with his car we’re looking to get the new shape this summer as soon as we can decide on which colour to get. One day we want black the next we want eiger grey There’s just something about the way they drive. And the fact that it can hold its own against rolls Royce’s and Bentleys yet at the same be driven to the shops or gym and never looking out of place

Looking back through it's MOT history things seem remarkable clean. No different than some Hondas I've had. It's once a car is past 130k that bills seem to rack up. I tend to buy at around 90k, just after the previous owners have put on new discs, tyres, exhaust, battery , suspension arms, and clutch. This has resulted in 20 years of free motoring parts wise!

Not with Toyota, Honda and Mazda from my experience. They can easily survive several hundred thousand miles, if they are looked after, and hardly require any major repairs. In the UK, they are likely to die from rust first, before anything major goes wrong with the engine or transmission. This can be avoided also, by adding some rust proofing underneath and checking on it every couple of years.

Matt .I worked on the development of this Engine at Ford Dagenham , & in my opinion it sounds like definitely turbo . Hi Matt, great video as usual. Us old revheads here in Australia would put a 350 Chev in it. That always solved all our problems. 😁 My first Sport was an 08 TDV8 in Stornaway Grey with cream leather. I was hooked. Towed my 25 foot caravan all over the easern side of Australia from Darwin to Far North Queensland and back to SA. It finally died of something my mechanic (doctor) couldn't fix. You know what they say, "Get a second opinion." I wish I had done that. I've now got a 2011 TDV6. I like it but I was spoiled by the TDV8. PS I like the old Matt, the bloke that follows his heart and wins 9 out of 10 challenges.

Hi Matt. Very entertaining video and I'm sure that the video where you attempt to fix this Range Rover will be even more so. You will no doubt score even more hits and subscribers. However, if it's purely about making a profit on this car then you know in your heart that after the initial £1,200, there will always be other issues which may cost you another £1,500. Even in the unlikely event that you get off lightly, you have another £1,000-£2,000 worth of odds and ends to fix like the tyres, seat, cracked media screen etc. You could easily spend £4-5,000 on this and it will still have issues. You also have to think about that concentrating on this bottomless money pit will take your focus away from much better car options.

I’d get rid… too much cost and as you say not a guaranteed fix. But I picked up one of these for myself as a week end car in November (wanted one from the day I first saw it in real life). It’s was no where near as bad as this but I had awful lag then it would just shoot forward. I scanned it and got an egr code also, Problem was fixed and code gone for me by using ‘wynns egr valve cleaner spray’ (cleans turbo system also) and I only use esso premium diesel which has a high amount of cleaning additives. I’ve just had a full service today and the car does have some flaws (seized Caliper bleed screws oil on gearbox transfer case) BUT it drives like a dream. Very responsive and smooth. Maybe try the spray… it costs £12 and worst case scenario nothing will change. Best case it becomes drivable again, just follow the instructions exactly as it says on the website, the reviews are hit and miss I suspect the people that it didn’t work for didn’t follow the instructions properly.

It seems to be an easy fix… you can test the EGR or turbo before replacing them! Even if it needed everything done, would be worth. But it’s hard to believe it needs. The whole car is in a great condition and has a good history, even if you sell it under the market price and not have a profit, would get the content for us 😅 Also, I think it’s totally possible to sell it with a £500 profit and still under value, it’d only take a longer time. We know you love this work, Matt. Idiot or moron would be to not recognise that! Money gets back. The fun, doesn’t. Just go for it! But anyways, you could easily have your thousand pounds back by selling it for parts or using as a spare… and I think Joey would love it!!!!!! Or selling it to a used parts dealer. We should respect this classic and previous owners that spent a lot on it to keep it on the road! A late HAPPY NEW YEAR! Love your videos, mate.

I reckon see what a specialists has to say about it, as I know they’re not cheap to repair but I think he’s pulling your plonky with those prices.. EGR valve is more like £150/£200 each. And a decent mechanic will diagnose a faulty turbo very quickly. I’m an l320 fan on my 3rd now and I think they’re awesome. I know you say who would pay £5000 for that car but name another car that you could get with that spec and so well prepared (once you’ve fixed it 😂)

Rimmer Bros fix sounds good, and yes repairs in Switzerland are usually expensive, and I am sure you can get the whole lot done in Poland or Germany for the price of £1500, E39 Restorations does BMW part refurbs and seems to have great luck with those fellows over there.

Miles are just numbers Matt! As you know as long as it's serviced well and in good condition and generally a good motor it will sell. I have a 63' Skoda superb with over 195k and it doesn't miss a beat, pulls and drives extremely well. Yes I know there's a big difference but I think the right buyer will come along with confidence to yourself! (As I very well wouldve done if I was looking for a car)

A cheap test you can do for only 2p is remove the egr pipes from the egr throttle a use a 1p coin to block the pipes only takes 10 minutes to do if you now have power below 3000rpm you know one of the egr valves are stuck open.if you still have the slow starting fault though sell it on if it's glow plugs they always snap off or the high pressure fuel pumps faulty it always dies after the low pressure pump has failed.

A £1000 Range Rover with numerous issues. What could possibly go wrong? 😁 1:42 Laughed out loud 😂 Would both EGRs be faulty? Seems to me that only one would fail but would that make the engine smoke like that? That looks more like a turbo fail but 🤷 If they can’t diagnose the car, it’s probably not worth the risk. Some DIY mechanic will be happy to buy this car for £1000 I think.

Good afternoon Matt I really enjoyed this video and I tell you for why. A mate of mine has just bought the identical car to what you've got the one he has bought has done 125000 miles and he paid 5 1/2 thousand pounds for it lucky for him it came with new brakes pads and discs and 4 brand new tyres. But he's still had to spend £1,000 on it for replacement of a drive shaft bearing. So just maybe it might be worth the gamble to fix your one because he's always someone out there willing to buy anything....cheers Phil from Newark

A bit disappointing to see that this up for £3k as spare & repair on ebay and you brought for £1k. From advert sounds like you have not done the work needed and taking in consideration the clicks and advert revenue you will get from youtube it seems a bit like a current trend for the new year. Buy a banger make a video and do no work to the car, sell the car for more and youtube money comes rolling in as well. Very good plan for 2024 your accountant will be even more happy😂👍👍

Matt honestly you know enough people in various trades to easily put this back on the road for not a lot of money. Trust me someone will buy it off you, mileage doesn't really mean anything these days imo. I've watched you from the early days and you'll kick yourself if you don't even attempt to sort it. Another cracking video, Matt. I always call Range Rovers, "Triggers brooms", because everything gets replaced so often that there is never anything of the original car left after a few years. Dead easy choice, break it, don't sell it and then have a customer bring it back 100 times in the first week and badmouths you for the rest of its, his and your life.

Hi Matt . I see one of your New Years resolutions was to be more cautious ? Tricky one this . EGR Valve issues can be a pain . You can spend money on them to fix the issue and there is no guarantee that this will make the Engine Management light go off . On what you have described , i would cut my losses and pass it on with a full description of what the car may need to get it back on the road . Somebody out there somewhere can take this on at the right price to get it roadworthy . For a business though , i dont think it would be cost effective . Ps thoroughly enjoy your channel .

I’m probably showing my age now,but when you picked up the Range Rover at the end of the video that area used to be a brakers yard (back in the 80’s) That Kinda jinxed it 😂 Remember passing the old yard and finding on old Riley hub cap on the footpath as we used the footpath to cut through from our house to that area (not giving locations away)

I would take to a specialist for a second opinion personally you can easily test an EGR valve or ever block it off for testing before replacing to verify if it is actually the issue. Also £600 for a single TDV6 egr is a bit steep they about £100 for both and its not bad job to do.
