rules pasta are still my favorite genre, yeah they were getting a little 'over done' there for a while. and as a result there are a lot of bad ones... but there is something about a -good- rules pasta that just hits different. I think i've managed to sus out a pretty decent set of 'rules' for a good rules pasta. 1. less is more... a small handful of impactful rules are better than a large number that don't get focus. 2. no unecessary rules. if a rule gets mentioned, then it needs to feature somewhere in the story. (basic checkovs gun stuff) 3. keep them simple. overly complicated rules with too many steps or exceptions will be difficult for the reader/listener to follow, and they will loose interest. 4. keep them reasonable. similar to the above, but the rules should be something that the protagonist should reasonably be able to accomplish and be provided the tools to do so. 5. have the protagonist at least ATTEMPT to abide by the rules, its just lazy for the protagonist to simply scoff and ignore every single one as an excuse to break them. 6. keep them thematic, the rules should all tie together to a central theme or threat, and there should be some logical connection between the rule, and the consequence. obviously all rules are ment to be broken, but these are some of the things i've noticed most of the really good rules pastas do. (including this one. its a little iffy on #4, but not enough to detract from the story.)

@@limehe444d....whatever force controls the twines has successfully spread to control the town, implying the world itself is next. The narrator doesn't realize he has not "escaped & became a millionaire & come back" but rather was ALLOEWED to escape, because he is controlled by the twines; they are evolving. They are of a finer nature than realized. They have been embedding themselves in the town's culture: normalization. The narrator was chosen to allow the red to spread: he has the acumen to succeed, AND he is ambivalent about the town: he mentions his dad didn't love him much & loved his mom more. The twine queen appearing to be mysterious, vindictive, feminine, mind reading, & controlling may be implying something about his mom, or it may be why he can't see the "root cause", hint hint, of the curse; because it's "too close to home"...literally & figuratively. The narrator has NEVER been free, nor alive, his entire "life". He is the puppet, the pawn, the mannequin he is horrified by....unknowingly. All my opinion. Thoughts anyone?

This is SUCH a good story with such a shit title. Like I understand creepypasta story titles are meant to be descriptive but this is a genuinely good story and I think the super shitty titles is a big reason Creepypastas aren’t respected as legitimate literature. Im gonna be real honest. If i give someone a 100% full and serious warning about exactly what will happen if they go and do something stupid and why exactly it is that if they do it I will not help them, but they still decide to go and do it, I'd absolutely just stand there and be like, "Welp, what did I say would happen... Guess this is where you're gonna be living now." Edit: People seem to be confused about this for some reason, but im clearly talking about the scenarios given in this story and not in real life situations...

Wow, CreepsMcPasta, good sir you have certainly picked a winner. It’s a rare thing that a story keeps me so entranced, and The time went by so quickly I was quite upset when it ended! To the author of this piece, I give my highest Praise, and a sequel would be too much to ask for, and could possibly even ruin it, but one can hope. Such a unique tale of “string theory” (lol) but definitely not the one we’d want to be true. And just as what Bill Murray whispered into Scarlett Johanssons ear at the end of “Lost in Translation”, I’m, (surely not alone here) absolutely dying to know what the goddess said. Definitely one of the best I’ve heard in a while, a long while. And you did an outstanding job delivering it to us all. The writing was as near perfect as one could ask for, the theme was absolutely engaging, and the slight amount of unknown is enough to either satisfy, or drive you mad! Ok, I’ve raved on enough, and I meant every word, but Well done sir! Well done!! 👍👍👍

My interpretation is that the town accused a woman of being a witch (wich she ended up being) and burned her deep in the forest. But she put a curse in the form of the strings before she died. So then she grew the strings and killed the town in revenge for all these years. She made them suffer which is why she didn't just kill them all instantly. Then, I guess for her own amusement, wanted to show them her creation and since the town is dead and she can't do anything else. She's forcing the protagonist to supply electricity so the town can run while she plays with them.

(spoilers) They fumbled the story in the end. Fun premise and generally solid writing undermined by the reveal of the antagonist and the ending that followed. I could handwave the people continuing to live in the town (even though there would be no reason to if these killer snares were just gobbling up people left and right), but to have it be a vindictive witch in the end takes away from the creativity of the snares. The best scene with the mannequin is subsequently ruined by the antagonist reveal, as the unsettling potential sentience of the snares is what makes these scenes compelling. To attach it to a sympathetic Boogeyman makes it sad and subsequently, not scary.

I feel the opposite. I like it that it had an explanation, even like the cause to a certain extent (as awfully cliche as it is). It is bad because it left more questions than answers. 1. How and why did the witch create the snares? 2. What is her story that lead her to this point? 3. What does she want with the town? To me, leaving things, especially possible lore, unexplained, reeks of lazy writing. It reeks of a writer who cannot put in the effort to fully flesh out and complete his or her world or story. A writer should have an answer, even a sinple one, for any major character, and any story or lore question. They should know what the characters do or cannot know. For me, deliberate mysteries only work in fantastical settings (constructed worlds).

@@MirrenTheDragonKnight My issue isn't that the explanation exists. My issue is that the explanation doesn't pay off. When a writer makes an antagonist sympathetic, they undermine the sympathy the reader has for the victims of the antagonist. And in the story, we're supposed to overlook the fact that this town was consumed by this witch and be happy that the protagonist made friends with her? The stakes mean nothing now. Additionally, this antagonist amounts to the "indian burial ground" trope, which is fine, but it doesn't serve the initial premise. If the antagonist was a sentient ball of string, it would make more sense as to why the enemy utilizes red string and bells as opposed to some dead witch. The premise is undermined by the reveal. It's not that it lacks explanation. It's that the explanation isn't cohesive with the events in the story.

@@shatnuh I didn't feel sympathy for her, but I know others sadly would. I agree on it on undermining the premise. In my opinion, a sentiment ball of string would be a bit stupid. I'm just it wasn't a giant spider or something.

Okay…wow this was an incredible tale. Why would you not put that soldier out of his misery if you could see the trajectory of his demise?

I also bought a ghost town. Then I hid the list of rules. Then I sent invitations for free visits to all retired politicians, whose addresses I had.
