Have you ever wanted to turn your home console into a portable console? The PS2 was the home console that I always wanted to be portable... and the PSP almost fulfilled that dream. But what would be better than a PSP? An actual PS2 Portable console! And that's exactly what this portable console from Aliexpress is. This Portable PS2 from Aliexpress uses real PlayStation 2 hardware and... it's interesting. The one I bought had some issues, but the Portable PlayStation 2 from Aliexpress seems to work ok now - let me know down below what you think of this Portable PS2!

It was sloppy soldering. But Its tough cause there is a lot of custom PCBs that make ti all work and overall I think the design is solid. But It needs like a better QA cleanup. Its like they just kind of got to the finish line and sat down before crossing it on this one. The overall form factor and design and parts all seem good. But....why not finish it. Also I think they missed a trick not having the HDMI port accessible from the outside. I would almost get out a dremel a port and HDMI extension to give it dual function as a portable screen.

Fun fact: The joystick issue with NBA Street has been baffling me for years. On my first fat PS2, you could not move up and left at the same time using analog. Your player would stop in place. I changed controllers and got the same problem. On my slim PS2, oddly enough, the problem seemed gone. Last year, on my jailbroken PS3 with software emulation, the problem returned with a vengeance. I have no idea what is causing this, but it even reoccurred in the Xbox version of NBA Street 3. This is the first time I’ve ever seen another person say this out loud. Interesting!

Just so people are aware - if you’re getting a portable console like this commissioned by someone in the modding community, you’ll most likely be shelling out well over $1,000. A ton of time goes into making a custom portable. I remember watching another person review this same unit and it was even more a mess than pictured here. It isn't even that bad when comparing it to other homemade portable console mods but when you take something like this that takes a lot of hands on effort and try to sell it as a mass produced product you naturally get tons of quality control issues. There's a reason why people who make modded portable consoles rarely sell them and when they do they charge more than double than what this costs.

yeah definitely not worth the price, although still cool, but poorly made, wouldn't purchase it for 200, never mind 400. Ive had a switch for about 3 years and have NEVER had a single issue with it, not one, and the screen and graphics are amazing for the $300 I paid, looks like a $1000 handheld system next to this thing. And the games are far better, run smoother, look 10x better, and 1/4 of the chunkiness. This thing looks like it came out in 2010 after the PS2 and we are doing an old review. Couldn't come close to justifying that price for how it looks and runs.

That is an odd configuration, what voltage does the PS2 actually require when it is stepped down to the original console? I only say odd due to possible uneven drain from a dual series and dual parallel capacity running together. Then again, they look like they recycled the batteries from another device, the wraps are quite torn up on the right side.

Nearly all PS2 racing games allow you to use the right stick for gas/brake, so this wouldn't be a huge issue. I think I like the buttons slightly better, but I switch back and forth a lot. It's a full PC so you can even install Windows and emulators on it if you want, but I'm enjoying the Linux OS they made for it and my backlog of Steam games. My favorite part is the hardware support tho, it's phenomenal compared to these no-name Chinese handhelds: Valve has already said they will be selling official spare parts for it to replace on your own, and they have their own teardown videos for replacing joysticks. That alone shows me they intend to support it for a very long time.

Drakengard is my favorite PS2 game. It's a dark medieval fantasy eldritch horror JRPG. It's a tad jank and super niche but one of it's sequels "NieR Automata" got some mainstream success. And honestly Yoko Taro's genius shines through. I really hope we someday get a port of it to steam and newer consoles because it costs too much for the average person to justify on it, and while piracy is a solution it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The eponymous first game in the series was released in 2003 on the PlayStation 2, and has since been followed by a sequel, a prequel and several spin-offs. A spin-off series titled Nier, taking place in an alternative timeline set after a different ending to the first Drakengard than the one 2005's Drakengard 2 followed, was started in 2010 with the eponymous game.

It seems as if the buttons are a bit chintzy. The real question becomes: do the face buttons preserve the analog switching mechanisms present in real PS2 controllers? If not that would make certain games that benefit from or even require this feature, such as The Bouncer (and possibly some niche aspects of MGS 2 & 3) nigh on unplayable. I think the presence or absence of the analog button mechanism would definitely factor into my decision-making process if I were to invest in this device vs a different portable system that could potentially run a PS2 emulator.

Per your request: I'd say my favorite PS2 game was probably Blood Omen 2 from the Legacy of Kain series, or the sequel; Soul Reaver. BO2 was great once you've unlocked a couple of vampiric powers...especially the Jump power. There's just something about targeting an enemy (or victim) from long distance, then just leaping at full speed and slamming them to the ground, and using the mist form that just makes you feel like an actual bad-a$$ vampire, unlike so many other vampire games. My two cents.
