Just to say guys that in the video I say the points are dead there not they were just dirty! Also the ticking is a sticky tappet nothing more so no the engine is not dead LOL

Great video Sheldon. Its Kismet2. You were meant to have this car. Its very smooth. Wonderful to see the old team back. Complete with breakdown. Look forward to seeing more. Keeping them polished really helps when you store them outside

I bought a secondhand sd1 many years ago and it kept blowing capacitors and wearing out points, I gave up in the end and took it to a rover dealer, mechanic opened the bonnet and immediately noticed the problem, it had the wrong coil on it, it was supposed to have a built in resistor after he put in the correct coil never any problems again

A definite case of Rover madness. 😂

This clip is a step back in time when you were, in my humble opinion, at your very best. OMG have I waited for this moment - keep going if for no more than my sanity.

A very large welcome back Toad - KZfaq (and I) have missed you terribly, lord alone knows what Sheldon has planned for you but you make these clips so much more enjoyable, I hope you are well and I'm really looking forward to hearing your dulcet tones again.

Have you checked that Sparkrite 2000 is switched to electronic ? There are 3 positions on the little crome switch, Electronic-Off-Points. You should set the switch to Off or Points before messing with the electrics, and checking the points gap. On electronic, there is very little current going through the points, certainly not enough to burn out points or condenser. I had one of those on all my V8 Rover's and zero problems, it's basically a fit and forget system. The only thing that wears is the nylon cam on the points if you don't put a dab of grease on the distributor lobes. I hardly touched the points gap for years, they just don't burn away, maybe just needing a slight adjustment for closure as the nylon cam wears. It makes me think it's either set to run through the points, or it's wired up wrong. If it's correctly set up, it will fire the moment the starter turns it over, they really are a great ignition system !

I'd be tempted to get that rocker cover off and have a closer look at that tappet. And if you're still running on old oil it would probably be a really good idea to do an oil change before driving it much more.

OH Sheldon it could have been worse. Entertaining video. That looks a very nice car indeed.

Had the same ticking on one of my tappets in a Mercedes 300TE. Changed the engine oil and the tapping went away, smooth as silk again. I think it could have been a bit of grit which had lodged itself in the hydraulic tappet.

Surely someone manufactures plastic wheel arch liners for classic cars that can reduce stone chips and rust in wheel arches

When you adjust the carbs but can't get the emissions down it's usually a bad cam.

Chuck that Sparkrite coil booster, plus the points and condenser over somebody's fence and go and buy a Lumenition electronic kit and then you can forget all about any further problems with the ignition system. Did you get the couple of plugs out that you couldn't shift previously?

Yeah we got the plugs out the mixture is bang on!
