Just a correction to a list I otherwise largely agree with. While I am very much in the “run everything you can off 12VDC directly” (I am an amateur radio operator after all and we love 12VDC), inverters (or transformers) do not “eat up amp hours like nothing you’ve ever seen” to nearly the extent you may think. A typical inverter or transformer setup is going to be around 85-90% efficient at any sort of reasonable load (efficiency is worse only when there is virtually zero load), so running a load off of a 120VAC versus implementing the same at 12VDC will at worst be the difference between consuming 100Ah versus having used around 90Ah (about a 10% penalty)....and some of those efficiency losses are actually made up for by the reduced voltage drop (also a source of lost amp-hours) in your copper conductors while also being able to use much lighter, and cheaper, wiring at the higher voltage - large loads require very large copper conductors at 12VDC...in fact, to achieve the same minimal voltage drop at 12V as at 120V you would need a copper conductor with 10 times the cross sectional area (a.k.a circular mils) which can add considerable weight and expense versus the much lighter conductor requirements at 120V. What this means practically is that one only needs to over engineer capacity by about 10% to accommodate typical losses and you can recoup some of that added cost through the reduced cost of wiring using lighter, cheaper, gauge copper wiring as copper is not cheap. So there is some loss in efficiency and, thus, consumed amp-hours when using inverters to generate 120VAC but the losses are not astronomical.

Great list except one. As much as I like and respect the Cummins 12V engine, the Caterpillar C7 is going to be just fine in this thing, and is actually a slightly better engine.

You'd have to take into account the wheel well humps, resulting reduced roof clearance from having to raise the floor...I suppose one might raise the entire roof to the same height to compensate for that. But even then I don't think you'd have enough space to actually exit the vehicle after driving it inside, unless perhaps you had the left side wall swing up or extendable. Probably too much trouble for something you'd still have to crawl in and out of.

That will be a nice idea, lift the roof 2 feet, and on the car hauling area it may be retractable vinyl walls, that way it will have a hard top it will keep structural strength and will still look like a school bus, which is the main reason we are watching this video. Good luck Capt'n

There has been several people to do this exact thing. Even put the back wall on heavy duty hinges so it could open the whole wall.

If he's hauling a single car I'd imagine that he'd put the car directly over the axle or maybe slightly forward, and if he's hauling two it'll help distribute the weight. Just have to go slow over large bumps as to not yeet the rear most car

@@TheFalseShepphard tying something down doesn't make a difference in the weight distribution....look at the leverage a car would have hanging out over that back axel. That said, the weight of the RV part probably balances that on the forward end

Idk if you know but personally fully loaded I wouldn't be worried about the pendulum effect or any of that cause I'd just go slow around bends. Extremely carefully and of course you would secure your load

The massive engine, the front vehicle and the living quarters in front will counterweight almost any load behind the rear axle. It won't be an issue.

The bus is extremely front-heavy as is. Besides, he'll be adding weight to the front by adding the RV portion and the underside via the battery packs.

Yeah, if he got some bags out of a FL70 it wouldn't cost much. The fab work shouldn't be too bad either.

You could talk about all the quirks and features. You may go far with that.

I was gonna suggest air bags, not only for suspension, but also to help in regards to loading cars with a ramp.

I dont think they have much room to lower. I was thinking cut off the frame behind the axle and make it hinge down with hydraulics. Even if it only gets half way to the ground

@@jeep2003, that's a good alternative to make a ramp. Regarding lowering with airbags, if you really wanna drop the height, there's always notching the frame. The same thing they do to minitrucks.

It would be like the Ecurie Ecosse transporter (on a budget). And there would be plenty of space for tools and for working on the cars. Because at some point, you will indeed be working on the cars. Was a WINCH ever a thing in the planning of this bus? Imagine being able to do your own recovery work. "FREE SAAB, MUST PICK UP THIS WEEK" would be a piece of cake if you had a winch.

@@dirkbonesteel I would not extend the back at all - that weight distribution would make the front too light, which could cause issues with handling.

A cheap option for air suspension may be out of an old smaller semi, like a FL70. They have a dump valve, I don't know how low they can go though. But even a small amount will help with the ramp length situation.

@@yt0097 I would not rely on anything suspensiom related that was not up to the task of handling all that weight. I'd imagine the air suspension must have been an option - if it does not already have air suspension. Though, I have only seen these kinds of busses in movies and that one "how it is made" episode, so I can not really estimate how it was built to begin with. But I would think that it probably is not too much different to a delivery truck's suspension.

@@dominick253 No, as long as you aren't impersonating a actual school bus. If you buy an old cop car the only thing you have to do is remove decals and red/blue lights. A bus is no different. (We've bought one before, only removed the decals). And he has already removed the decals and painted over the lights, once a bathroom is installed he will likely get it re-registered as an RV.

I rode a bus like that in about the 3rd/4th grade with a church camp group. We got about halfway there and the thing overheated. On the side of the highway. They literally had to take back some of the Costco water bottles they had handed out to fill the coolant tank enough to get us to a gas station

sound like you, and me both had the same idea, as my step brother's granddad did the same with an old Greyhound bus years back, drove it all over the US, and Canada with few issues that where not normal maintenance.

C-7 is an electronic controlled engine. They wont live long at that kind of horsepower. Hell they usually don't live long at 210 hp. The little cat engine's are horrible.

A Detroit 60 series wouldn't be a bad choice. Parts are cheap and they are plentiful. Not the most powerful, but for a bus it would be plenty.

just go with the locomotive approach. Attach a large alternator to the motor and then use that power to drive the electric motors.

@@Species-lj8wh - That would take 100 hours to engineer. Remember, he would have to do all of that... It would be much smarter to put a higher HP tune on the ECU, and go from there. I'm not sure why he suggested doing that in the video.

@Lassi Kinnunen Drove an 18hp 2CV back and forth through San Diego- on the freeway for a few years. Drove a Dyane 6 between Los Angeles and San Diego on a regular basis for a few years more. No racing engines there- just a mind-set and an allowance for time.

We're talking a Trabant and a Fiesta together, not really all that big. Also, it looks like the load floor will be fully above the wheels, so no issue there.

I bet a Trabi and a Mini would work. :P

The body serves no real structural purpose, it likely has a C channel frame. It won't "wobble".

Yeah, that CAT should do nicely turned up. I've heard that some required larger injectors and/or pump tuning (mechanically de-tuned).

@@yt0097 there is no injection pump on c-7. It uses high pressure oil to fire injectors like 7.3 or 6.0 fords

That makes it real to me. ;) Anyway, Robert said he wants to rig up a folding tarpaulin cover over the sawn off back of the bus, but it's already wide enough for most cars to be driven inside. So keeping the shell intact will save him the expense and hassle of building a new cover.
