I worked at Jag when this car was engineered. I designed the original bonnet, hinges etc. At the time Jag was owned by Ford and urgently needed a new model to bring in revenue. We based it on the Dew98/Lincoln platform that was supposedly almost finished by the Ford team in the US but our small team of body design engineers turned this car around in record time and had it finished well before the Ford model. Needless to say Ford US management had searching questions to ask how their much bigger design team with much bigger salaries could not deliver their car on time as we had. Incidentally their car flopped and was withdrawn quite quickly. Check the body structural frame behind the wheel arch liners and you’ll find the Ford Oval logo stamped in key panels.

After owning a 3L V6 S-Type for a few years, I craved for this V8, finally bought it and loved it to bits. Drove it all over Europe and enjoyed the emotions of 155+ miles/hour in Germany. But, after 5 happy years, an idiot hit me from behind so hard that it was an instant write off. And it happened just after clocking 100k miles and passing the MOT with no advisories. Sad moment in life. Even if owning a faster car right now, which I also love, I still miss my gracious S-Type…

I had the same thing happen to me, too, after almost 9 happy years of owning a 2012 Ford Mustang, driver's side t-boned when the idiot who hit me me failed to stop or even slow down for a red light, instant total loss.

You cant believe the motoring magazines. They dont do long term high mileage reviews. I think jag have had some undeserved bad piublicity but bmw and audi for example are the true moneypits but you need to find out the later sorted years of each model and avoid certain ones like the plague. The xf seems really good and very under rated and are a great secondhand buy as they are far cheaper and some are with the better engines and transmissions.

The first time I ever remember being stunned by a car was seeing one of these for the first time. I was 7 years old when they launched, and I spent my pocket money on a big Diecast model of one. Fast forward to 2021, and a lady round the corner from me just bought an immaculate '03 V6 in the same colour as the model I used to have. It still turns my head every time I see it. I think I need one of my own.

I bought my S Type new in 2003 for 25K. Spent 3K on extended warranty, 3K on repairs and 500 on fixing rust on a wheel arch. Traded it in 14 years later with 90K miles covered for 500. 31K plus service costs and petrol for 14 years driving an upmarket car. Only traded it in as rust on wheel arch camd back and the auti gearbox played up when cold in winter ( loss of power for 1sec when pulling away, followed by thump similar to letting clutch fly up on manual) which Jag could not fix. Loved it. Got a XE 300ps new to replace it, new 48K and hope to get another 14 years out of it. By then we won't be allowed to buy petrol cars and I will be 75 so will get a mobility scooter and piss off Tesla drivers by driving up the main road at 3mph wearing a trilby and a grumpy old bar steward face. Heck if me and the wife travel side by side we can even hold up cyclists on country roads......REVENGE!!

I wasn’t a big fan of these when I was younger, but in the last 6 years or so my tastes have changed, and now that I’m at the grand old age of 19, I love cars like this, the W203 C-Class/W211 E-Class, and the older Lexuses. I’m often told that I’m old before my time, but I genuinely would rather have an ‘old mans’ luxury car like this with cream leather and wood trim than an AMG-Line A Class. Glad to see I’m not the only one.

Matt owned loads of these old s_types , quick tip budd, with respect to the remote fob not operating the central locking, if after swapping the battery its still not functional, simply open the fob, on the motherboard you will see a raised brass like holder that presses against the battery, this sometimes flattens out over time and thus the connection formed by the finger press on the fob fails!! Simply raise this holder with a flat head screwdriver and save yourself a potential expensive visit to the auto electrician 👍👍 Regards Paul

I suspect they used Fords remote locking module, which were prone to losing their memory. I had a number of Mk2 Mondeo's and the remote locking stopped working at some point on all of them. You had to turn the ignition from p1 to p2 and back three times, or until the alarm light went solid red. Remove the key, press lock then unlock and hey presto, it would work again.

Fast forward fifty years on my 70th birthday, I brought a 2007 S-Type 3.0 with a BRG exterior and biscuit interior. Now five years later, I still love it. In October 2020, I dragged my son up to Santa Cruz to look at a 2003 S-Type Base (V6) it was $2,000. Well, my son was originally thinking about a small truck, but he really liked the look and sound of the Jag. We've put in another $2k for repairs (brakes, tires and ZF servicing) he really likes it and gets "thumbs up" from Jag F Type owners. He's 17, and last weekend a lady in San Luis Obispo, CA claimed he was stealing the car....lol

I paid £150 for a 2001 s type with the 2.5 v6 with 1 months MOT left. I enjoyed it for the time I had it. Very comfortable cruiser and I like the way it looks. Its now in the garage waiting for me to get a license (im almost 17 so 1 more year) and apart from the dodgy headliner above the rear passenger seat its all sound, garaged its whole life and never driven in the winter. I have one of these Jags. There is only 1 problem with it: I do not know what to replace it with. I've considered the X350, but they're pricey and there can be lots more wrong with them. Also, mine has 125k km (that's 78k miles) on the clock, and is in great condition... maybe a XK... but I think in 10 years I'll still have it. Simply can't beat it for the price.

Yeah, those engines are pretty bullet proof. The 3.0 V6 is pretty well proven from what I've seen, as it's been used on many cars as well as the base S-Type. The 4.0/4.2 V8 was actually designed by Jaguar, but Ford owned the plant where it was designed at. I'm super impressed by the reliability from a high percentage of them. I have a 2004 XJ8. Love the car. But now I'm seriously considering selling it and getting an XJR of the same year. In the States, where I live, I'm thinking the Supercharged version, the R, may be more sought after on a collector market.

2002 was a change over year for the S-Type. You have (like many STRs) a Mk1 body with a Mk2 interior. You got the 4.2 anyway as the 4ltrs came with a 5 speed box.. I had a green Mk1 V6 '02 just like that with the dodgy front suspension too. I chopped that in for a Black ex-Jag managers V8 Sport (with all boxes ticked) that I loved like a new, new wife and actually shed tears when I sold it. I still miss it now.

I bought my XK-R from a large Yorkshire dealership and three days later the owner's wife "invited" me to provide a 5 star review! I'd hardly had time to sit in it yet. I went on live chat a while back and she panicked when I asked why genuine reviews are not allowed. She has yet to justify the practice. The car's OK but I won't be back.

I bought a year old 4.0 litre in 2000. I went through multiple suspension wishbones and ball-joints and strangest of all, 3 expansion tanks. The coolant seemed to decompose them after a few years. Sold it to a guy in Germany on ebay in 2009 with an illuminated battery warning light which neither the specialists or the main dealer ever managed to fix. I read there was Tech Bulletin later regarding a chafing wire loom which may have been the problem. Was far too young to own it, I admit my own reflection in shop windows in it, just looked wrong, but overall, I loved every minute of it. A real wafter!

Everytime I see a tidy S-Type (or XJ, XK or even X-Type) I always fancy one. They are very cheap, but almost have as much of a regal British look as a Bentley. Pretty solid running gear and the paint and leather usually looks in great condition. There's afew Ford parts and switches but that happens even in Astons and Lambos with VW. Instead I took the safe option and got an E90 320d but that's like a dentists waiting room, where as Jags of old are like hunting clubs on wheels. The first XF incidently uses much of the S-Type platform but in a more sterile package. The retro oldy worldy British Empire looks might not have been in vogue in the early 2000s but now I think most of us like the fact that it offers something different, cosy and interesting.

Should anything go wrong mechanically, I can't fix it..too expensive thanks to COVID..no money for much. The outside mirrors..don't work..must do manually, Windshield fluid...not working..filled, checked, cleaned little nozzle on hood..nothing! Electrical, wiring, motor...or fuse? Trying fuse tomorrow. Clunky sound in front..after stopping when I start to go...what is it? Bearings, ball joints, control arm, springs, needs oil...now I'm petrified..what have I done? No garage, and these babies need a garage..but no snow or super cold weather here. Down South .mostly rain..humidity(98%) and temps regularly 95...even thru fall. Should I return it to seller n beg for my money? Sell it myself immediately? Keep it, pray, and make alter sacrifices to the engine and car Gods? I think I'm in deep s---, no service records, but Vin is all ok..no issues, 3 owners..3 states. This Jags has been around...if only he could speak.

Very nice Matt 👌🏼 especially being a V8 and at that low price 👏🏼 I’ve always kind of liked the S types retro MK2 styling despite the overwhelming , stereo typical “Old Man” criticism it initially received but I’ve never been brave enough to actually buy one 😬 however ... just over three weeks ago I purchased its successor, a one owner from new 2009 MY XF with the same 4.2 V8 😎 also quite rare in its own right as it’s from the “Diesel is God “ era. This is my very first Jag and I absolutely LOVE it 💪🏼😎👍🏼 Great vid as always 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Please keep them coming.

I think the 4.2 XF was only sold with the 4.2 for a year before it was replaced with the 5.0 engine. The 5.0 wasn't sold in the UK except for as a special order or as the monster XFR

I have the V6 Sport that has the same issue with the alarm/door. Its the drivers door module, you have 10 seconds to put the key in the ignition or the alarm goes off. On rare occasions it can also lock you inside the car if you mess about with the windows too much before the central locking kicks in after going 5MPH. Replacing the drivers door module and getting it re-programmed to your key should be pretty easy, the modules 2nd hand are as cheap as £20 on eBay. The only hard part is programming them to the key.

Hi Matt, I think you’re a great KZfaqr, with a personable and authoritative style. Most of all, you’re not one of these high voiced, phrenetic reviewers from our old colony who exudes fake emotions. You’re easy to listen to and, it looks like you’re a very, very rare breed: an honest car dealer! If I was in the market for a second hand car, which I may be in a few years when my son reaches 17, I will definitely look you up. I just saw this review and was curious as a neighbour of mine, approx. 20 years ago, had a BRG one of these as a company car. He was a 29 year old who was the National Sales Director for the now defunct (or absorbed) T-Mobile and used to rave about his car. We went to watch Newcastle beat Leeds in the PL. I nearly didn’t get a lift back, since I taunted him so much about Leeds losing. Great day, great car, great result….

What a touch I’ve always liked these and 🤞nothing to bad on the MOT. I would as you say maybe change the grill and possibly rather than Refurb the alloys look on Ebay for a later set of Jag alloys they could really lift the car.

I bought an SR (V8 Supercharged) way back in 2003 - I still have it, though I don't drive it much now that I work at home. It's only done 150,000 miles. I live in California so there's no rust and the condition is excellent both inside and out. The wife thinks I should get rid of it and get something electric instead. But trade-in value is only about $2500-$3000 US. I still love it so much - so it might come down to who I love more - the wife or the Jag!

Think you may have a bargain. If not too far gone underneath get it blasted and undersealed. V8 will become sought after, V8 R supercharged even more so. Check out the coolant hoses as the one thing that will wreck these otherwise unbreakable units is an overheat. Also good you have the 4.2 and not the older 4.0 which can have liner issues. Looking forwards to the next episode - older jags are getting scarce and good ones are holding values well - be interesting to see how this one pans out. Personally I’d be finding reasons to keep it for a while !

I love the S type, I always have, even before I had an X type, then an XJ, then an XF, I think they look great especially the facelift models, especially when they have the xenon‘s and especially the Type R’s. They get so much hate but they are very comfortable, they are reliable and the parts are cheap. That one right there you got a steal, that thing is so clean, looks like it has every option except a sunroof and adaptive cruise control, but I know that a lot of cars don’t come with sunroofs in the UK, when I’m pretty sure it was standard in the United States💯👌🙏

We had a 2000 S-Type 4.0L V8 for 7 years. Mods: that grill is like the S-Type R model. Maybe get an OEM grill but the original slated grill is rather dull. You can also get a lower grill for the "mouth". We removed the round badge on the bonnet and replaced it with a Leaper, looked great. Replaced the cheap looking exhaust tips with a subtle but quality design. We removed the side protector strips that aren't present on your model. Apart from that a decent quality of window tint without being too dark. It didn't need much else. Great car, but had a lack of torque. Smooth though. 5 speed Ford transmission was good but ultimately wore out after 13 years of use due the alloy valve body recesses. Found out after trading it that they are used in Lincolns which suffer the same problem. Brass inserts solve the problem. I always wanted the 4.2L with the ZF 6 speed which you have. The traction control system on the 4.0L was a death trap. Once trigger it killed all power for a 3-5 seconds. We had a couple of close calls. Would have been nice to sort that out.

I see your point and it’s hard to beat such a low price tag (if everything’s fine with the car). I can’t avoid but looking at the S-type a bit like I look at the 996 for Porsche 911s. Love the back but kind of hate the front. If that makes sense.

I think remove any signs that it has a V8 like any badges, and get a cheap exhaust for it, wether it's straight pipe which might be droney or just a de muffler. If u wanna go all in, I'd suggest getting a vavled exhaust that can open or close from the push of a button or work with the RPM so when your flooring it, lets say 3.5k rpm and above, the valve opens. I think it'd be nice and subtle

If it's like the Land Rover remote locking system, when you can't or don't want to use the remote and have to use the key... Turning the key counter-clockwise in the driver's door and holding it fully turned for 5 or 6 seconds disables the alarm system so that it won't go off and wake up the neighborhood next time you unlock the car. Give it a try, if you don't find an easy fix like a fresh battery fixes it (also note a previous response below about fixing the key fob). This procedure to disable the alarm also can be handy if parking the car for an extended period of time and not wanting to return to a battery run flat by the alarm system. If you end up getting a replacement fob, hopefully it will have a simple "learning" process, like I used on a spare I purchased for my LR. It was some years ago, but I seem to recall was nothing more than pressing the button on the fob four or five times while sitting in the car with it unlocked.
