I bought this 2005 Pontiac vibe for my sister as she has been left without a car during this quarantine situation. This is a 1.8L 5 speed manual. It's the same as a toyota matrix. Please consider supporting the channel by subscribing. Yes that is snow in May.

My favorite part about the vibe was the fact that the backseats folded flat and even the passenger seat folds flat. Amazing amount of cargo space for what the vehicle is.

I bought my wife one. Bought it used. She loved Pontiac and I loved Toyota so this was a great car for the 4 or 5 years she drove it. Traded it in on a 2007 Toyota Rav 4. Another great car.

@@daf62757 I just a 2005 Pontiac Vibe today for $500 and she is in great condition. Mechanically and No Rust or Dents. Few scratches and scrapes. I love the space it creates and I am going to covert it into an overland style camper vehicle rig.

I don't understand sellers that insist on telling you how much they spent on repairs. Its irrelevant to the value of the vehicle, unless its a major required service that knowing it was done means you won't have to do it. Looking at you Audi/VW TSI timing belt changes...

Good choice on the vibe. My wife has one for a daily driver. It was our primary vehicle while we were in college. We road tripped all over Iowa in that thing and it’s still going strong at 250,000 miles. Some minor things have come up (rusted exhaust, stuck locks, etc.) but engine has only ever had a new battery and oil changes. Same inefficient cat code on hers, but no state inspection in Iowa so haven’t even bothered to fix it.

I've known several people who really liked their Vibes. I would definitely try O2 sensors before replacing the cat. Plus just giving it a general tune up which can help with the emissions code as well. Could also be an exhaust leak somewhere. I would also clear all the codes and see if the crankshaft position sensor and knock sensor codes even come back, as they could have been from misfire events or some such. I think you will be able to get it sorted out cheap in the end! Good deal.

Any tips on what to have a mechanic look at as preventive maintenance? Or, what to even replace before it goes out due to being at 156,000. Shocks, struts, tranny, engine look ok. Yep, those are good cars. I've had an 04 Matrix w 1.8 5 speed for the last 6 years. Minimal maintenance, uses a little oil but still starts and runs like new. Hard to believe you got yours for $800. Mine also had the 420 code when I bought it. Toyotas and some other cars have sensitive 02 readers, and like people here recommend, I put the extender between the cat and the sensor. 6 years and 60,000+ miles later the light stays off. It's a good idea to change the PVC valve too- less than $10, helps stop oil usage in older cars.

Dead is a relative term with catalytic converters. A MIL eliminator will still sniff it enough to set the code if the cat was replaced with a “test pipe”. Chances are the cat still sorta works or the exhaust would smell like a 1970 car’s. You might run some cleaner in the gas tank. An aftermarket cat is not extremely expensive now but if the engine burns a little oil you’re pissin in the wind

I'd pick up a cheap post cat oxygen sensor, then put a spacer on it Since it's a Toyota at heart, try to lean towards a NTK or Denso sensor, make sure you don't mix up an AFR sensor vs Oxygen, there IS a VERY big difference on how they operate Just search o2 sensor spacer on Amazon Unless the cat is COMPLETELY trashed, this should get it through a drive cycle and pass the catalyst efficiency monitor

There’s no way he spent 3k on the transmission and clutch. I had a vybe for quite a few years and drove it up to 400k miles and when I replaced the transmission and clutch, it only cost me 1200. It could be because my mechanic is a friend of mine so he gave me a discount on labor but paying nearly 2k extra for labor seems suspicious. Edit: both the transmission and clutch were brand new as well

if it came with a warranty at the time 3k makes sense in my opinion, given im canadian and $4000 is reasonable here so i dont know if labour is just exchange in diffrence in price or not but $90-$110 an hour for labour is common here

Good car I didn't want one at first but I'm glad I have it. I got very attached because it's so easy to maintain and they run forever. My favorite part is when I get to do the transmission fluid it has a drain plug. I almost got 300000 MI

Honestly the most underrated budget car in the 2000s. I orginally had an 04 matrix xrs 6spd with 112,000kms. Got it for a steal and sold it a few years later for a nice profit with 140,000kms. in 2020 i replaced my winter beater 96 paseo with an 06 vibe 5spd that i paid $550 for with 220,000kms. Currently at 280,000kms and the only maintence ive had to do was sway bar end links, rotors pads and i decided to get new calipers instead of rebuilding the original rusty ones. Still have less in the car then i paid in tax at our service center ( taxed on a $4000 value).

Our version of that car in the UK is the Toyota Corolla Verso and they're a great, reliable car, even with those miles (considered high in the UK) I'd have bought that car for the price you paid, looks straight and solid with plenty of life left in it. 🤞🏻 the cat's not worn out.

There is a TSB for the Matrix for fuel mix LEAN when temperatures are below 0C/32F due to a leaking intake manifold gasket. Super easy to change, and it is less than $15 from the dealer. Aftermarket was actually more expensive in my area, and the one from the dealer is of a different design. I bought the gasket at the Toyota dealer for my Vibe. I wonder if that is contributing to the p0420 code on yours.

BLU: Toyota puts on many different Badges for their Corolla.......depending on which Country they are sold......and which name will get the most sales. Same thing for the fake luxury-brand "Lexus"...most of the fake Lexus(s) are sold simply as Toyotas with the exception of : North America,Russia,UK,etc.......everywhere else they simply have a Toyota Badge and whatever name gets the most sales.

@@gramps0208 On top of that, Toyota had actually combined the sales numbers for the Matrix with the Corolla when reporting them.

The camshaft sensor may clear all your codes. Or the vvt solenoid, which my not throw a code. If oil changes are not done regularly, bad oil will gum Up the screens on the vvt solenoid. Just look up KZfaq videos on it, I’m sure you already have haha. On a side note, I can’t believe the amount of rust y’all have to deal with up north. Here in Florida there is none. We unless you let a car sit for months beachside. Good luck man always love your videos, and your segway music!

If you have a knock sensor error, you may have rodent damage to the wiring (on the backside of the engine). I tried everything but what worked best was enclosing that wiring in a wire loom from our local got-everything hardware store. We were told that the wiring is made with rubber that contains soybean oil (how very green of them) and rodents love to chew on it.
