Hi James, great review mate. For me I'll take the PR7 over a Kove any time. The PR7 has an Italian designed and built engine and is essentially a hand made bike from a boutique factory in Portugal. Light, easy to work on, set up from the factory for touring. They were thinking of blokes like you and me when they designed it, Regards Steve

I would rather modify a 500 EXC, with parts available almost everywhere than cross my fingers and hope that nothing breaks on the bike for which I paid a premium because it happens to be 'hand-made" (out of parts they combined from here and there).
@James_Rides
@James_Rides 2 ай бұрын
I’ve never owned a 500 exc but I have had a couple of 300s along the way, engine aside they don’t even compare. This is a much less aggressive chassis, a more mellow comfortable position. And the motor isn’t a race thoroughbred, again a more pleasant easy ride. In terms of parts combined.. other than the motor and chassis it’s all off shelf components, nothing particularly strange. And parts seem readily available, I admittedly can’t just nip to a dealer in 20 minutes but these days a part is just an internet click away.
@ozadv
@ozadv 2 ай бұрын
Modifying a 500? Sure, costly though and not ever going to one as comfortable for actual touring. And compare service intervals..😅
@C_R_O_M________
@C_R_O_M________ 2 ай бұрын
@@ozadv People have gone around the world with adventurized 500s and for touring the service intervals are not the same as the factory suggestions for track use/race. Not even close. OIl changes every 40 hours (instead of 15) and the oil still looks new. It's a 15 minute deal. Valves never ever move under these riding conditions so no messing with them either. There's a guy who went around the world and only did a precautionary engine job at around 50K kms and the bike is currently over 100K kms on the odometer. He's a New Zealander. P.S. They are much more comfortable than the PR7 with a modified seat. I own a 500 and have sat on a PR7 (and I'm ergonomically challenged - very tall).

I see they did finally change the paint on the infamous exhaust header. Mine had an extremaly thin black matt paint and got rusty literally after first ON ROAD ride. I wish you this paint stays a little longer :) btw. there are some chinese parts alongside big brands'. Like fuel hoses which, in my case, cracked a month after purchase (changed on warranty). Throttle cable adjuster also got rusty after about a month - not a technical problem but instantly visible ;/ I absolutely agree this bike doesn't like slow technical riding. I believe the ECU mapping is the main faulty factor here - extremely nervous reaction to each slight blip of throttle; I've never experienced anything close in a bike or a car. There is one thing you can do to improve this - put a bolt and a nut under throttle cable where it's attached to the throttle body to increase leverage for the initial part of the throttle rotational movement.
@James_Rides
@James_Rides Ай бұрын
No mate! The paint is still shocking.. I can’t understand why they would still set it up like that as standard. The fuelling seems to be a little better as I’ve ran it in more. Thanks for the tips, I’ll keep an eye out on those bits 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I think it's very difficult if you like to be more off-road focused and have just one bike. I thought I was gonna buy either a PR7 or a 701, but for a lot of what I want to do they are a bit heavy, so bought a CRF450L instead. But after having the 450 a year or so I realised when I need to do a fair bit of road or I just wanted more of a challenge, especially as where I mainly ride in East Anglia it's not very technical, then a T7 would probably be a good bigger bike. I don't think you need to be a pro to ride the T7 off road, I feel 99% of the time the reason people struggle on bigger bikes is they have the wrong tyres on! So personally one bike is never gonna do it all, there is no such thing as a unicorn, but I guess for most it's about finding a bike that ticks the most boxes. Totally agree about the Kove, it's too early and actually Id probably get the Fantic 450 rally which no one seems to be talking about. 👍🤘

So far I've found the only KZfaq channel where someone has traveled with it long distance and had no problems with it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7elmZOknK2upo0.html . To be honest, it convinces me more and more that the engine may just be reliable. My friend had with AJP PR7 in Morocco desert problems with fuel pump and filter. He bought a better pump. When he fell, he punctured the refrigerator, which he temporarily repaired with a two-component cold weld. Now he have radiator guard and crash bars ordered on Thork racing site

The things that haven't changed, haven't changed because the R&D/Marketing costs haven't been covered (or the profits from those aren't high enough to justify major revisions). It's also possible that the lack of changes have to do with emissions and they currently fit under a looser tier than what's in force today (which is what the KLR/DR/XR lines did and why they remained unchanged, pure profits and no emissions updates required). Nothing wrong with "unchanged for 6 years"..... if the price reflects it. I'm a cheap ba$tard who can't get off paying over 10 grand for a bike, much less one that's 6 years old.
@James_Rides

I think the revisions are a good enough evolution.. suspension, brakes, clutch, ECU etc have all been changed through the years. Things like the frame seem to be the strength of the thing and I can’t see a need to change it. I agree though, it’s an expensive thing! But looking around, everything is these days… I can’t believe the cost of a new enduro bike.

I feel so sorry for you. We have a new one purchased from official distribution ajp spr240. I sincerely advise everyone to avoid this manufacturer. We just seized the engine in the spr240. Since the crankcase breather is routed underneath the engine and not into the Airbox like on other motorcycles, the engine took on water and sand through breather. All during normal use on the same route with other motorcycles. Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not acknowledge the complaint and we have to go to court. Already during breaking in there was a problem with the fuel system, leading to overheating of the engine. In this situation, the manufacturer also ignored the problem. In addition, in the information on the motorcycle there is a rear suspension travel of 300mm, which unfortunately is a lie. There is only about 260mm between the rear wheel and the fender, swingarm fully relieved. This causes the wheel to hit the fender on larger potholes. I ADVISE AVOIDING AJP!!!
