I bought the cheapest Volvo S40 in the country for my daily driver!

Hello and welcome, you join me on a beautiful day to show you around my new daily driver. It’s the cheapest running Volvo S40 I could find and in this video I give you a short review on the car.
Of course it’s not the best example and will need some work completed but for £250 you can’t go wrong!

Really nice video! I think you could definitely do well doing car reviews, this was better put together than some of the bigger channels in the UK, mentioning no names! Great work and congrats on the purchase!

Here in canada you can find a car cheap enough but we have to have our vehicles “safetied” which can run you thousands depending on what the car needs to certify it...

We have an MOT inspection which can costs thousands to keep the car roadworthy. Luckily this car was in good mechanical condition!

i actually had exactly this car..the S spec, i found it very comfortable to drive and it did me well until i drove my mates C70 Mk2 and now i actually sold my S40 1.6 petrol for £1250 and purchased a C70 MK2 SE 2.4 D5 auto and i couldnt be happier . i dont resent the trade at all as my C70 has literally all the trimmings that volvo offered apart from the sat nav and built in phone and i bought it for £600. she has 150K miles on it and it still runs as smooth as the day it came out of the factory and has a stack of service history with it so thick it had 2 folders with it! for me volvo really pushed the boundaries with the build quality but the only thing that let it down was fords build quality underneith like the suspension components wear super quickly. unfortunely i have heard that the S40 is more ford than volvo and even has a peugot engine. (some do) not all. not unlike all the chinese rubbish you get nowadays when ford sold volvos badge because now thats all it is....chinese build with a volvo badge which is a shame.

The Mk2 C70 is a lovely car. This is just to tide me over until I can get my convertible back out in spring. I plan on getting it back to its former glory and if I can get £1000 I’ll be happy! Got a few jobs to tick off before then. Feel free to subscribe and follow the journey.

@@db192 i unfortunely only have my convertible to drive during winter which is a shame because i would love to put it under wraps and only use it during the summer. the only issue i ever had with my S40 was the air conditioning condenser which was knackered when i purchased the car and actually ended up costing about £400 to repair. but apart from that there really isnt alot to go wrong with the petrol engine as long as you treat it right it will outlast everthing else where as i see the S40 R designs there seems to be more issues with them because people think they are a racecar because of the R design badge! but with the S spec model there isn't alot to go wrong with it simply less electronics ect to go faulty. i have followed the channel and hope to see some cool valet content inside and out engine bay/interior and maybe even a polish? should come out lovely as volvo's are renound for there superior paintwork after being cleaned ect.

@5:02 I would opt for the more inspiring 170 bhp white block version with LPG. In good condition 5 grand seam to be a fair deal.😊

People complain about the Ford underpinnings and Volvo tuning that makes it more comfort oriented but I drive a V50 with 300k kms and I've literally jumped it right as I entered a turn (didn't bottom out nor scrape anything) and it took it like a champ and remained completely stable for the entire duration of the turn.

The inline 5 cylinders would give it more of a Volvo feel.

Lol i have been ripped off 🤣. I have bought this car about a year ago its a 1.8 with 125hp from 2008 with 150.000 km on it for 4800 euros from a car dealer. I could have gotten one for half of the price but they come with 100.000 km extra milage on them. I plan to keep this car for about 2 to 3 years. I must say she drives quite nicely even tho id wish she has a little bit more power but overall its a smooth ride and comes along with traffic with no issues! Currently i am looking for a s60 from 2012 to upgrade to in the near future.

I think I got very lucky with this car it seems that these cars are more expensive in other countries. Someone commented on the video saying the same car would be €2000 where they live!

I bought a 2004 model 6 years ago with 220.000 km, its a 2.4L. It now has 275.000 km. Paid like 4400 euros for it. Still runs very good. Changing to a s60 also. The s40 hardly gave me problems, so Iam sticking with volvo (knock on wood)

I have this volvo model..2008 1.6 petrol...been a very good reliable car...wondering how to check the gear oil level on this.?...thank you for the video.

No way to check but if it’s due a replacement then it’s an easy job. Jack up car, undo fill plug on front of gearbox, undo drain at the back. Install plugs and fill up with 1.9 litres of fresh oil. Plenty of videos on KZfaq on how to do it and will save you the labour costs. Search for Ford Focus 1.6 gearbox oil change, the S40 has the same engine and gearbox.

Hi. Question. I have the same car in 2008 1.6 petrol. Just bought it recently. I noticed when I drive and press the clutch before shifting, the rpm goes slightly goes up before it drops down. Is it normal?

Are you taking your foot completely off the gas pedal before pressing the clutch? Does it happen when you are still or at speed?

⁠hi. Yeah I take my foot off before I clutch. I read this on other forums for same makes and other makes too. I just wondered if anyone else experienced this.

1.6l??? I love my 2011 S40 with the 2.5 Turbo. 230+ hp. When I want to pass, I love looking at the little dots disappearing in my mirror. B-bye!

Sounds like I did well to get it for £250! I managed to get more when I sold it. Seems that these cars are undervalued for what they are, it’s a decent car!

I was lucky that I was working at a car dealership and this came in as a part exchange. It had a few bits needed to fix it up but I did them myself and got a good deal!

This the worst design second generation Volvo S40 ever design by Volvo. Volvo had stupidly engaged this terrible car designer who later on left Volvo to design electrical appliances I really HATE the too Rakish C pillar design of this S40 even the 1st generation Volvo S40 looks more upmarket and smoother to the eyes than this crappy 2nd generation S40 design ( totally a failure design). Any sedan with too rakish C pillar sedan design by Volvo , I am not interested to buy or even bother to listen any reviews.

You certainly feel strongly about the design. It’s not the best looking Volvo but you can’t go wrong for the price!

@@db192 For the new car prices for previous Volvo S60 and 2nd generation S40, is not far off from C class ,A4, and 3 series. However ,the rakish C pillar of previous S60 had not been sold and received well . So it is proven rakish C pillar sedan does not sell well worldwide . Camry ,accord , c class ,A4 ,3 series with less rakish C pillar sold very well worldwide . Look at current 508 and VW Arteon,with liftback style rakish C pillar is going to be doomed very soon. Aerodynamic to design rakish C pillar is all BULLSHIT stories .

@@Blurberrybrown That is why the second generation S40 sales was a total disaster compare to gen 1 S40. Most Volvo sedan with rakish C pillar like S60 was also sales disaster . If future Volvo sedan continue with rakish C pillar , it will be DEAD before arrival . Obviously , you do not care but Volvo car corporation cares when their rakish C pillar sedans are not selling and profit is heading south .
