I got inspired by your trip to Switzerland with XC70 and took my V50 from 2008 2.5l petrol for 6000km trip from Lithuania to Belgium, France, Switzerland and back. Held out perfectly. 171000 miles on dial still running nicely.

One of the few cars I miss is my 2008 V50 2.0d, it was very basic and bright Red. Fitted a used leather interior and did loads of miles in it. Was also one of the last V50 2.0d to not have a DPF, because it was such a low spec (I think it was an S), so no Eloys fluid to top up.
@gimble447

@@bigjmlthe trim level has nothing to do with having or not having a dpf, I have an "S" with a dpf and it's September 2007 ( 57) lol, I have a different engine though ( 1.6 d) I think it's actually that the 2.0 was the last to get a dpf (late 2009) but also it may have been removed, not 100% sure

@@gimble447 You could buy a 2007 2.0d V50 with a DPF You can disagree all you want But my info comes from Volvo UK I sold the car in 2012, so could have mistaken the model designation. It might not have been an S, it was the absolute bottom of the range though. It had cloth seats, 16” wheels, no sunroof, no privacy glass. Nothing It was the most basic V50 I ever saw.

@@bigjml woe woe woe you said your 2008 didn't have a dpf and was maybe because it was an "s", trim level doesn't affect whether it has a dpf was my only point, no1 is disagreeing with anything, infact it's YOU who is disagreeing with what YOU just wrote yourself 😂😂😂😂 "my 2008 was one of the last to NOT have a dpf" 😂😂 wow, just wow 😂

Never fails to amaze me that sellers can't be bothered to clean a car before selling it on to a dealer.

Maybe Matt is the one in 1000 dealers but in my experience sellers know it will make zero difference to the price they get offered. Dealers factor in valet fees anyway. Whether you hand over a show car or a skip on wheels, you're going to be offered rock bottom
@pclayton5063
@pclayton5063 7 ай бұрын
I always have a pristine trade when I show up at a dealers lot. Not so much thinking it will increase any offer but more to show I care what my cars look like and that's the condition I'm also looking for. If you show up with junk you're more than likely going to be offered junk because the dealer sees you don't really care.
@hughjass8430
@hughjass8430 7 ай бұрын
@@pclayton5063 I'd be same. I clean it meticulously for MOT'S etc. But I just don't think dealers will factor in abit of light grime and a crisp packet when determining price. They would put stock in body/paint condition, mileage and service history, above all else. I bought a mechanically solid n well maintained Avensis this summer from a small dealer. The car was a literal dog house when I viewed it but he had it valeted and it was immaculate for pickup. It's a cheap and easy refresh job for a dealer compared to expensive body and mechanical work.

I spent hours cleaning my Volvo C30 before I traded it in. Then on the way there the M5 was closed and I had to do 50 miles down country lanes in the winter. It was absolutely filthy when I got there and I was gutted. Mind you the V40 I picked up (from a main dealer) was none too clean inside so karma I suppose 😄

My parents bought one of these new in 2005. 2.0L in silver with a black leather interior and large alloys (can’t remember the sizing). I remember at 10 years old my brother and I thinking it was a spaceship compared to our old rusting Passat they’d traded in. We used to take it down to South Wales, across the channel to France and everywhere else in between, full to the brim on camping trips. Great memories of that car and it never once let us down. After 15 years of solid use they gave it to my elder brother who has used it to commute up to Scotland from Derbyshire and back on a weekly basis for the last 3 years. Still runs like a dream.

I can tell you from experience that the V50 is an awesome car, and i’m lucky to own one with the D5 manual as it’s a rare spec. I’m often doing long distance drives and towing and it never skips a beat. It’s not a massive car but it’s still an estate and for my usage it’s very practical. Underrated car in my opinion

I once brought a 13 year old 850 estate. He had spent £2k on a new Ac system , £500 on a new wiper assembly and £400 on a new windscreen at a Volvo dealer before selling it to me 3 months later. That was on top of full main dealer service history, and thousands more in receipts. I’ve always brought second hand Volvo’s since, people generally keep them immaculately.

1.2k likes in 3 minutes? Things are taking off. Just started watching so I'm well sat back, waiting for the "I've massively overspent." So far, car looks good. Got to the end and wow. A weak and a small pump of diesel, followed by a sale to the daughter of a mate helping her out? Win, win! Congrats and they are getting a solid car. Shame about the road tax. The UK appears to have remarkably low road tax on large engine cars, so while relatively low, not low in the UK?

One thing I envy the English with…most of your cars appear to be manual. Here in NZ a manual is worth MORE purely for rarity…everything is auto. Brought a new motorhome 3 years ago and had to wait for import delivery as I insisted on manual. I like it from a reliability and control side…changing gears aint the chore many think it is

This looked mint from Judy a quick wash and clean out which is testament to how good they are as everyday cars. Can’t deny though I’d have golfed to have seen it after you’d “massively overspent”! Had a good look at one as a company lease, back in the day, I cant remember why i didn't select it, normally it was the model grade option list pricing, by the time you had picked up a nice one it was over the budget, and say the focus it was based on was better value. What I do remember it looked great and had good color choice and interior, but was fairly small particularly for a volvo estate and I like the utility of properly big car

I usually recommend these as first cars, well, this and the other Ford Focus Mk.2 based Volvos. They're cheap to repair, decently reliable, and importantly cheap to insure. Although, the early C30s are starting to rust, while the S40/V50/C70, which are on a LWB version of the Focus chassis, seems to rust a lot less. Not all of them have bluetooth though, it was optional, and it's something most people want these days. Thankfully they have an AUX in, so you can use one of those satnav looking things that have auto/carplay, which can work as a bluetooth reciever as long as the car has AUX.

Right now I am on a volvo S60 2002 though with around 275k miles and verrry well maintained! and for this V50, good it is the updated version! Gives you the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the better interior design compared to gen 1 of this, and of course a nicer trim overall! Had the same in my Volvo C30, which is still such a nice looking car!

Hi Matt, I had a 2012 v50 estate for a couple of years. Mine was the 1.6 E drive but I thought it was fantastic. Great looking car and went well enough for zero road tax. Only sold it because I needed something 4wd to pull a horse trailer. Loved the v50. Now also have a v40 R design with the same zero road tax 1.6 engine. Absolutely love it. Would love to see a video on one of those.

fun fact, the 1.6 edrive is a 1.6hdi (psa/peugeot/citroen) engine, same with the 2.0 one, both very good engines

@@yreva532much better when Volvo put them together too. I owned one in a V60, pushing 200,000 but drove like it had only done 20,000. Surprising amount of power in it too (for a small diesel in a big car at least). Shows as well what comes of taking care of it with servicing and good fuel etc.

@@johnb8956 to be fair, all volvo did was buy the engines and redesign intake pipes to fit, nothing engine core wise was changed really. They're good engines in any psa product too, have 150k on ours and doesn't miss a beat, and as you say, does pull well, have surprised a decent few much more expensive cars with it

@@yreva532 oh yeah, it’s not like they completely redesigned them or anything. But as far as I’m aware they were almost fully put together in the Volvo factory using shared parts. Also, while I can’t attest specifically to reliability, I can say from personal experience that a mate of mine’s Ford with a 1.6D was much more sluggish than mine.
@yreva532

@@johnb8956 they do have a few issues that can effect power, ford did change a few things too and they were never quite as punchy as psa or volvo ones, more smooth but not as fast

I've had one of these as my daily driver for the last 7 years. I went for an SE, rather than the R-Design, more discrete and mature styling plus better equipment as standard. You wouldn't want an automatic with the 2.0D engine, it would have had a Ford powershift transmission which were unreliable, but the D5s with a geartronic Auto were better, but not many of these around. It's been high maintenance as I expected, but much cheaper than paying for a finance car. I even did a road trip to Croatia in it.

Had a pre-facelift V50 Sport which I sold this year.. R-Design spec was introduced on the facelift, when Volvo decided that they wanted to steal sales from the 3-Series Touring. Sport was better than R-Design in some respects, as those R-Design two-tone seats get very grubby quite easily (Sport had black leather as standard). Mine was very well appointed; electric, heated leather seats, cruise, air-con, dual-climate control. A great budget cruiser that you can service with gen-2 Focus parts. Mine also had the 2.0D engine which I believe has PSA origins- the same unit can be found in some Peugeot/Citroen commercials of that era. Not the last word in refinement but quick, easy to work on and powerful with a lot of low-end torque that you'd expect. Sold mine as I wanted something smaller...so I got a C30 (which I always wanted) with the same power plant and equipment spec. Always liked Volvo; something about them that doesn't give off the same negative vibe their German counterparts.

Funny you keep mentioning the Ford Focus. The s40/v50 of this era are based on the same model year Focus because Volvo was owned /partially owned by Ford at the time. There is even a FoMoCo stamp on the front strut towers

I had a 06 plate one of these . I loved it , however it was the 1.8 petrol which had a habit of going through piston rings …. The previous owner hadn’t been fastidious with the oil changes

Good price for that Matt, love service history too.. (I've just bought a runaround with none and hated the fact! Always feels like a gamble or something is due to go wrong!) I needed to sit down after hearing autotrader and ebay costs..robbing b*****s!😲 Anyway, thanks for the vid👍

On my third V50 - 2012 1.6D SE Lux S/S bought new - ~98,000 miles and zero VEL 👍 As Volvo have now decided estate cars will no longer feature in their range in the UK I will keep this until I have to replace it.... I was told that the shape of the centre console was inspired by the contours of a Swedish chair and the control panel by a Bang & Olufsen hifi remote control...

I just bought, like litterly 3 hours ago, a 59 plate V50 1.6D DRIVe with start/ Stop and 160K miles for roughly the same amount as you. Previously I had a 55 plate V50 I got rid of recently due to a leaking valve or a valve seat and extremely high oil consumption at only 124K Miles, shame about the engine. Anyways, thank you for the upload.

Just while you were talking about overheads at the end there. I imagine your various mechanics bills over the year add up to a substantial amount. Have you ever considered taking on a mechanic full time? Do others do this?
