Jeremy, on January 19, 2019, I walked into Gruhn's with my right arm in a sling, recovering from my second shoulder surgery. I was looking for a smaller guitar than the dreadnaughts I had been playing to help alleviate the shoulder problems. After removing my sling, I played 10-12 different guitars, but kept coming back to an OM-18 Authentic 1933. As I later found out, it was the first year of production for this guitar and had evidently been in the store for several years. I told my wife I really liked it, but it cost $6000, according to the tag. Without batting an eye, she said okay, get it. I ended up paying $4000 for it, and yes, if you haven't guessed by now, this is the same guitar you wanted. I want to thank you for passing on it, because this is my favorite guitar. As for those people that question spending this much on a mahogany guitar, I would question them about their rosewood snobbery. A great guitar is a great guitar regardless if it is mahogany or rosewood. Personally, I actually prefer the sound of a good mahogany over a rosewood.

Only the uninformed would cast judgement on one wood over another. A friend of mine built a Holzaphel 12 string replica out of pine (like the original). It sounds like a harpsichord and rings forever. I defy anyone to show me a better 12 string. Mahogany has a sweet tone and is tight and responsive. Rosewood is different, not better, not worse.

@@mind140 Well put. I have owned a lot of guitars, I still prefer guitars with mahogany backs and sides. My first guitar bought in 1961 was a 1939 Martin 00-17. 15 Martins later I have a 0000-1 from 1997 and a 2015 00-18V with flamed mahogany backs and sides. I prefer the best guitars over the most expensive guitars. Relicing (sp) of any degree is a deterrent to purchase. Phony is phony.

Happy to hear your still enjoying the D-18 Authentic, it looks, sounds, and probably feels vintage and as long as it makes you happy, then really thats all that matters, The Authentic series has been around for more than 10 years now, so your not the only one searching and finding that new modern vintage tone and they keep selling. Martin must have got it right with the Authentic line. Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations on getting your dream guitar, and also many congratulations for growing your business to the point where your family is taken care of AND you get to enjoy some of the fruits of your hard, hard work. Jeremy, most people probably don’t realize the sacrifices you’ve made and the incredible stress of starting and maintaining a business. That Martin sure sounds sweet and beautiful, and you’re so right when you say they completely nailed it! Those Authentics are the real deal, for sure. Yes, it’s going to require a little extra love and attention at some point, and the cost will be in the range of some mid-level guitars, for sure, but it’s completely and totally worth it! Enjoy, Jeremy, enjoy!!

Hi Jeremy, I'm an ancient acoustic guitarist in the UK. I am one of those Baby boomers who have acquired a significant collection of acoustic (only) guitars over the last 25 years. I love your passion and and your sincerity. My main passion is for 12 fret guitars because of the wider necks which suit me better and I mostly play Collings. I would never play a "reliced" guitar that looks as if it has been played badly - i.e. scratches above/below the strings. The "pickguard" used to be called the "scratchplate" in the UK because marks below the strings would have been caused by trailing finger nails not flailing picks! The time will come when I (and many other baby boomers) will shuffle off this mortal coil and those 20th C guitars will need to be offered to a younger generation. Will the prices of end of 20th century acoustic guitars retain value and love, I wonder? Thank you for your channel.

One of my guitars is a 1969 D18 (original owner) and it is staying with me until the end of me. I do folk and Americana. Around 8 years ago it had a neck reset, other regular maintenance, and a K&K Pure Mini pickup was installed. I usually use Martin RETRO light strings on it and I sometimes string it with Martin Lifespan PBs lights when I want more punch. Play on!

Enjoy that beautiful Martin, Jeremy! I own a Martin D18 Golden Era and a 1961 Martin D18. I agree that a good mahogany guitar definitely has a unique and complex tone. Great for vocal accompaniments. I did not appreciate this for a long time , but now find a place for mahogany next to my rosewood acoustic guitars. I’ve been playing guitar since 1967 - so been around the block… Cheers!

I love the Martin custom and signature models, but there is something to be said for a basic D-18 that can be replaced, and you’re not afraid of taking out to play without worrying about it getting scratched or otherwise dinged up. Love my D18, looking at a D28 along the same lines.

An elegant, stripped down, and absolutely beautiful, real players guitar. A friend purchased one in sunburst when they first came out and I was immediately ( and still) impressed with it's tone/voice. Thinking about your comments on the non adjustable truss rod, I remember his neck as a slightly more chunky ( but again accurate to "1937") and therefore in my mind maybe more stable over time? Another impressive, stripped down copy was the copy of the first Ditson dreadnought. Again elegant, super light, and a beautiful voice/tone.

I am an old man in a small town, there is no one here I would I would trust to work on it even I could have it fixed so sadly it hides in the case with all its scars of the good times. I always aspired to own a Martin Dreadnaught. Bob Shane played a Martin and that was my inspiration. My first one came from an advertisement on the college billboard back in 1969-70. It was a used D-18 of questionable parentage but it was a real Martin. Over the years I bought a beautiful 1929 O-28, another D-18 after the first one was lost in a house fire, a Lo Prinzi, still have it, and a couple more. My biggest disappointment was a D-45 I bought new from a dealer in 1989. Maybe my expectations were too high for this beautiful guitar- it went back to Nazareth 3 times, the last time during Covid when you couldn’t even bring it inside. I was met in the outside lunch/smoking pavilion where it was picked up by an employee without even an inspection! That final “warranty” repair included reglueing the plastic binding coming loose, it’s second neck reset and fret replacement, a new bridge to help resolve a bowed top, repair a cracked brace and a bill for over $1000.00! Not bad for a mint condition, rarely played 30+ year old D-45. That’s when I made up my mind to sell it. I still think a Martin makes one of the best guitars and I still have 2 that have stood the test of time.

Its an eternal battle to provide for a family and keep the ship afloat. That what Dads do. I have sold guitars in past i regret as well. But I'm better for it now. I bought a 2007 D18 Vintage new they called it the new golden era Martin and i have to say it sounds and plays incredible , when i entered the store that i bought it from they had on display some beautifully ornate D28’s and other very high end Martins which i picked up and played but they weren’t for me they sounded muddy and since i already own a Taylor 810 which is quite bright sounding with a neck to die for i didn’t want a muddy sound but i picked up this D18V and played a G chord and the rest is history every song i grew up listening to from the late 60’s and seventies were coming out of that guitar so needless to say it will be with me till I’m laid to rest and hopefully one of my grandsons will end up loving as much as i do and thats the thing with an awesome acoustic guitar it becomes a family heirloom who cares how much or how little a thing costs if you love it then price really doesn’t come in to it just love it and play the hell out of it.

Sweet guitar. I had a similar dream. I took a slightly different path. I chose a Gruhn Spec sinker mahogany natural top D-18. It mops the floor with many other guitars I've played next to in jam circles. Tonally is kind of in between the Rosewood and the hog. Dry, balanced, cut the mix, records well, and has the slightest bit of sweetness like rosewood. The adi top is spectacular too. Congrats on another feather in your cap!

Nothing to be ashamed of. That's a beautiful ax with a fantastic tone. Many people don't understand that Mahogany is one of the finest tonewoods available. It's light and responsive and it's been around as long as musical instruments have, and it has outstanding tone. Rosewood is another tonewood that is deep, rich and has outstanding tone with it's own characteristics, as are woods like Koa, Ebony, Walnut and dozens of others. Makes no difference. A well made instrument is a joy to hold and to own. I own a D28 that I'm in love with. I have two less expensive mahogany based instruments that I grab like you do and play all the time. I keep my instruments meticulously maintained. Congrats and play that D18! Don't give up on that OM.

Hiya Jeremy. I recently bought a D28 ModDlx which looks and sounds great except thru my guitar pedals where the sound is to overwhelmingly deep in overtones. I installed an LR Baggs Anthem pickup. I’ve found at high volumes with a QSC K10 monitor I can’t seem to cope with the muddines while adjusting all the eq/filters as possible on my LR Baggs Voiceprint preamp. I’m thinking it’s the rosewood and general “bigness” of the D28 that’s causing the issue. However I do use the same Baggs Anthem on an old Yamaha LL5 mahogany dread naught and that guitar handles mod pedals and high volume just fine. I want a quality mahogany that will work well with my guitar rig. Can the D18 stand up to the challenge? Lovely playing and well made video. Thanks brother!

Yep. People that doubt the authentic series bc of the price have not played the old Martins, nor the high end models the actually produce the details of the golden era guitars. The standard D18s don’t come close in sound in any way. Also, aging on an acoustic guitar opens the sound up for more sustain and power all around. Needs to be played to be understood before anyone makes comments.

I own a 1933 Martin R-18 archtop. It is constructed entirely of Mahogony. It has a unique sound that I enjoy very much. As for relic-ing a new guitar? I cannot stand it. I was disheartened to hear Martin has offered a battered road-worn version of the D-28. I never would have believed they would allow such a thing. I do understand artificially aging a guitar like this D-18. If I didn't know better I would have assumed it was a genuine vintage Martin. They do an amazing job. I just hope you'll consider it a forever guitar.

Funny you mentioned the thru-saddle, Jeremy. I bought a used D-18GE about 2 years ago and it has a thru-saddle, as well. I bought it from a blue grass player, which I am not, so it came with the action set up way too high for me. I figured, "no problem, I'll just take down the bottom of the saddle as I've done many times before on other acoustics". Wrong! I ended up taking it to my guitar tech and he adjusted it for me. Thankfully, I haven't experienced the "up and down" problems you have, perhaps because it is an older guitar. I also use D'Addario, humidipaks, which help regulate the moisture content of the wood. At any rate, the guitar is playing and sounding great, so I am a happy camper.

Yea, Jeremy, that D18 has it. My dream was always a D35 and I bought one a few years back. Will never regret it. With you on the relic nonsense too. As a relic myself, I resent a fake relic. Like getting gray hair, the only way to relic a guitar is with time and road wear. I still have my 1st 'good' guitar, a 1971 J50, mahogany/spruce like the D18. Lots of checking, new frets, new bridge, Grovers and still singing out after 52 years. Also a 1963 Epiphone Cabellero all mahogany beginner guitar I restored from basket case status and play out with sometimes as well.

I REALLY hate the whole relic thing! I got my D28 in May of 1993 and when it got its first 'ding' on the body, I was heartbroken. Luckily it was very light damage and a shop (Old Boise Guitars - RIP) was able to buff it out. Now it and my other 8 guitars (Martin J15-12 mahogany along with 7 various electrics) sit happily in hardshell cases and look just a perfect as the day I bought them.

I love my D-18. It’s less than 10 years old but it sounds better than my 30 year old Gibson, and my 20 year old Taylor. It has the most balanced sound of any acoustic I’ve played, and I’ve at it for over forty years!

I have a restored 1956 D-18. It was in really bad shape but I had it restored in 1995. It just has an incredible sound and great intonation. I know what you mean as a faithful friend and companion. I love it. Please don't ask to buy it I am keeping it till I die. oh yeah btw I paid $10 for it... and spent 1200 restoring it.

I just purchased one and decided I'm not gigging with it. Definitely not putting a K&K in it because of the lack of truss rod, plus it's so perfect, I don't want to change it. And as far as the fluctuations, so be it. It'll be as temperamental as the human condition. Some days it'll be easier to play, others not so much. Great video. Best D-18 I've ever played.

You should have bought a Recording King RO-318. Same tone under $1000.00.

I really liked what you said about relic’ing guitars, especially how it makes people think that it’s okay to treat instruments like crap. I’ve always dreamed of owning a D-18, but my old Yairi DY-45 has kept me pretty happy. It’s been with me a long time and lots of places, so it’s a bit banged up, but every bash came with some of my own pain.

The Dane story made the whole video. Thanks for sharing. The D-18 sounds great. Even on my stupid iPhone.

Depending where do you live yeah, Hopefully your guitar will hold up, here in Canada the humidity and temperature changes drastically and I saw a couple of Martin needing resets after only 4 or 5 years. Your guitar case is your friend!

Hi Jeremy. You mentioned your D18 hangs on the wall in your dining room. How do you manage humidity levels in your home? Thanks. P.S.-- I have always loved and amired the sound of a good D18.

We have hygrometers around the house and we always stay between 40-50%. It's a non issue for the most part.

I have a 2005 D18A '37. I paid full pop in 2006 at Woodland Instruments in Tokyo. We are talking $8200. It's hands down the best acoustic of the 100s I've owned (I'm 78). You did right and the guitar will only get better. Merry Christmas, Hoss! PS: You'll like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rqmAga-nqdDKkmw.html

Re the through saddle…maybe the solution is having two saddles, one for winter and the other for summer.

It’s beautiful! It really is an accurate and tasteful recreation. People who like heavy relics are probably trying to live vicariously through the real people who beat up guitars once upon a time. It’s not so much about the look of the guitar, but the lifestyle beyond it that it represents. Everyone wants to be a bad dude and live dangerously- why not do that through one’s guitar, lol? ⚠️🤘🏻🎸 I’m personally not a fan of relics unless it’s a recreation of an old model that is done tastefully and accurately. However, if someone showed up to my door with a beat up thing at my door, I’d still totally play it. I wouldn’t like it, but I’d totally play it. 😉😂
