Thanks Jeremy, I always enjoy your videos!!!! I have personally owned Taylor's K28, 814, 710 , Larrivees, Tackles, and now am the Proud owner of a 2009 Martin HD28. This HD 28 blows away any guitar I have ever owned both in tone ,volume, and playability! Thanks again my brother in Christ! Keep the videos coming! Blessings😇

I was shopping for a Taylor this year and ended up getting a HD-28E and and 000 14F special with Bubinga and Carpathian spruce. I tried mid and high-end Taylors, new and used, at the local retailer. I loved the feel, the action and the playability of the Taylors, and the tone was nice. On a whim, I had the salesperson grab the D28 down from high up in the display, played "Deep River Blues" by Doc Watson on it and knew I had to have it. I ordered one with the Fishman pickup online a little after that. I miss the cut-out of the Taylors, but with the heel of the neck joint in the way, those cut-outs aren't as useful as they might appear. I did take the action down by a 1/64" on both guitars, they were within Martin stock specs but I wanted it a little lower.

The Huss & Dalton guitar and the 12 fret Martin would be the two I most wanted to play. I own a 2003 Martin D-41, and a 1917 Martin 1350 Koa, and a half dozen "Martins" that were hand made, but not by Martin. My two best sounding guitars are in that latter category.

Hi Jeremy, your channel is amazing i'm learning a lot thanks! I believe the first post war d45s were built in 1968 and not 1965, plus they had a German spruce top and non scalloped bracing, this gave the magical CSN&Y sound, and yes, the 1968 d45 is my dreams guitar, greetings from Italy!

My first guitar was a Martin D1 R. I bought it in 1994. I still have it. I played it at least daily. I wouldn't sell it for all the money in the world. It was the best money I ever spent.

I bought a D-1 in 1993. I went in to buy a 28 and walked out with a $700 guitar. I still own mine. Wife has a 28 we never play. The D-1 is the go to. I wouldn’t sell it for anything either. People think it’s a vintage 18 when they hear it. Martin went stupid with the low budget guitars but those first few years produced some awesome guitars. I know several other people that own similar guitars from that era and they won’t sell them either.

H&D to me is the *smartest* investment. It incorporates the best of every aspect of acoustic guitars at a price which is relatively affordable.. I have a T-0014R. I also have a recent Preston Thompson D-SMA.(sinker mahogany/adirondack Dreadnought), which is another conversation. I would love for you to make an effort to round up a mahogany Thompson D & give us your take on it, even if it's a loaner 😊. Be well & stay safe J.

Great playing and comparison. I have a ‘91 Martin J-18M. I believe there were only 300+ made. Scalloped, snowflake abalone markers, ebony buttons, tortoise trim and vintage toner. Have you encountered this model Jeremy? A lot of Martin for the money!

Hi Jeremy Really love your content and the way you show it to us. Congrats. I just bought your Guitar buying guide! Cheers. I play a Faith Guitar (tony policastro recently reviewed one on his show, mine is Engelmann on Rosewood). It is not a cheap Beginner Guutar, being ca USD 1300.- new) but as you know, one gets curious ☺️, so I walked into my local Guitar shop here in Zürich, Switzerland. Never played a Martin Dread and looking to try a mahogany b&s, well obv a D18. The only hog b&s dread there was. Unfortunately. Also played a D28, D35, and two Furch. Now I liked all of them but that D35 was just very cool, more balanced then the other two even though RW b&s. BUT the one from FURCH, wow, so balanced, maybe a bit more clarity, brilliant hights, nice mids and still good lows. Very cool kinda matt finish (patina style). Apperantly hand brushed. And it was cheaper then all Martins even though being the flagship model of their vintage line. I am just a beginner, but that one was nice, my favorit of them all. A Furch Vintage 3. did you ever play one? Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers from Switzerland Mitch

So I played a 1999 Collings D2H B aaa A a month ago at Austin Guitar House. It nearly ruined my love for my Martin D28 and HD28. I would also love to try some other boutique guitars such as Santa Cruz and Huss & Dalton and maybe make a trade in the future.

Liked the sound of the D-41 but probably not the neck or high action. I play a Taylor 816ce Builders Edition and love a Martin 000-28E Modern Deluxe, and recently acquired Collings 00. Thanks for the comparison.

Super talented guy, I feel like the martins have always held me back, I just want to play cowboy chords and that’s it. I bought a Taylor as well bc the playability is so much better and the sound was more balanced. The martins are all bass and it just seems to drown out the note definition that I desire in playing finger style and light picking. A good Taylor will develop a low boomy frequency as it ages but it also retains the note definitions on the high end that they are known for. Just my two sense. But my ultimate favourite guitar is still a Larrivee which combines the awesomeness of Taylor and Martin!

53 years never played a Martin, then started beginning to learn guitar for the first time...after 2 days my neighbour heard my noise...brought his Martin...5 month later I bought my first one. (ok a DX-2E, but a Martin)

I'm late to the party but I preferred the Padgett Model One. Also the Neil Young tunes are a personal favorite. I have a D18GE about 20 years old and an old Alvarez with a 3 piece back like D35 which is amazing for a pawn shop find. Many others...

I essential sleepwalked into a 995 D-45 a decade or so ago when the gardiner of a friend of mine told him he had a guitar to sell that he never played. The price he wanted for it was 1/3 of its value, and when my friend told me about it, I jumped. It was the first Martin I had ever had. Well, it soon became a good friend and is one of my favourite guitars. It has a factory-installed pickup which gives it a very natural amplified sound. I don't play it as often I should and I don't think it has actually completely opened up, yet. Still, it plays like a dream, looks amazing, and sounds like all the great Martins I have heard on records. It's a cannon in volume, but the tone is balanced and for a dreadnaught, not too boomy (I use .012s).

I fell in love with a Taylor 214ce, and played that for awhile. However, I primarily play fingerstyle, and the narrow nut width was getting difficult for my large hands, so I got myself a Martin OM-21. It is AMAZING. Between those two guitars, I will never need anything else. The Taylor is perfect for strumming and rhythm parts, and it records SO well. The Martin is great for doing leads over top, and for fingerstyle stuff. My dad has an Alvarez dreadnaught (it’s the one with the tree of life inlay, absolutely beautiful) from the 70s that sounds amazing as well. I’ve never played a Martin D-18, but I’ve played their lower level Mexican made dreadnaughts and I really wasn’t that impressed with them, I prefer my Taylor.

I really want to find a 12-fret dread - probably d-18 style, so that was a favourite. The Huss and Dalton looked great too. I liked the sound of the D-41, but I don't think I could justify the price over a d-28 or hd-28. So the Huss and Dalton and the 12-fret were my picks. Nice to hear a bit of dead played on the guild near the end.

When my first high end guitar purchase happened, the decision was made on the way the guitar sounded. I went through four music stores and 26 or so instruments. Martin HD28 won out. I also stopped playing and would ask the sales guy or gal to play it as I stood away about twenty or so feet. Whole different sound presentation.

Martin HDs have those scalloped braces and tamper the bass a bit. I have a Martin HD-35 that's my favorite dread.

I care for a 2015 Martin CS HD-35 Sunburst and a vintage 1970 Martin D12-35 as well as several other builders. Would NEVER have a Taylor in my collection. Boucher on order....I can hardly wait 'til August arrival😊

Mark is a very good guitar player however, I haven't found a Taylor yet that can match my older Martins. I also have some older Guilds whose necks feel and play just like my Fender Strat or Tele. In the end it does come down to personal tastes!

Jeremy talks about OMs and OOOs having less volume and presence than a dreadnaught, but I gotta say I have an OM-28 that is much louder than most D-18s I play. Just a fluke I think--it has a super weird looking piece of spruce on the front compared to any other sitka spruce Martin I've ever seen. There's really a lot of variation in how wide the grain is, with lots of silking, and even some weird distortion in the wood grain so it doesn't run so straight at a couple points. I probably played thirty OOO-sized Martins over a year, hunting for a more comfortable guitar, and this one blew me away instantly.

The Model One was the best sounding. The second best sounding was the slotted headstock D-18 tied with the H&D to me.

Sitting here watching...noodling on my Gibson Songwriter. That was the one that grabbed me when I went shopping for a new guitar. Definitely has to you when you select your baby.

I’m surprised he didn’t prefer the Padgett. It fit him best in all ways, I felt. But I could tell as soon as he first strummed the H&D that he was gonna have a thing for that one, poor guy! That’s a great guitar. I felt a little disappointed by the d-18e tho. It should sound just like any other 2012+ d-18, but it sounded odd. I’ve wanted a d-18 since 2012 and heard too many :p

I've got a 1965 Martin 000-18 and a 2021 Martin D-18 standard. I really don't see the need for another. That's just my 2 peeps that cover everything.

What is the nut width-string spacing on most Martin's? I am looking for the largest-widest I can find! No matter how much I practice my large fingers won't form a B7 (best example) cleanly. So far the Seagull S6 at 1.8 in. is the biggest i've found. Great video. You are the acoustic man! Jeremy

I played Bluegrass and country on a 1995 810 for around 15 years. Tried out quite a few Martin dreads throughout that time and wasn't convinced by any of them to leave the Taylor fold. It wasn't until I heard one of my friends 2018 Reimagined HD28, that I thought I had to have a Martin. That guitar just had the "IT" factor, tone-wise that I hadn't heard in a Martin before. I ended up with a 2018 Reimagined D41 and it's a great guitar, but it PALES in comparison to my 2019 Bourgeois Aged Tone Vintage D with AT Banjo Killer bracing! The Bourgeois is HANDS DOWN the best acoustic guitar I've ever played.

My Martin GPC Special 16R is a cross between a Martin and a Taylor. It has the playability of a Taylor but still has that "Martin" sound. The smaller size is a nice bonus. I still prefer the "Martin Sound" over the "Taylor Sound".

Funny my first guitar was a Martin dx1 but it got a fail in the nick so i return it to the store and upgrade to a Martin 000-28ec. It was just got to the store and i was a fan of Eric Clapton. The guitar in the store was the first batch of Signature so the selller told me that my guitar was build with the same tree that eric claptons guitar was build with. Btw I still got my Martin guitar and guess i will never sell it. Then i cant play anymore then i hope one of my kids will use it :)

Lol. He didn't like the neck profile/playability. Martins have more depth but Taylors definitely play like an electric in comparison.

Ive had a Taylor Academy/614ce/324ce and a 322ce 12-fret, they all pale in comparison to 000-Custom Shop VTS(torrefied) Martin!

I just wish I could go back in time and never have to sell my D18 but stuff happens when you have to feed the kids you feed them somehow. Now I’m 70 I still have ten guitars but there mostly fender or knock offs . One real old Gibson The Gibson. 1920s is all I know and a couple of epiphanies but my best player to me is a Ventura dove copy 1974 .sounds good plays well. I guess I’m just used to it. for me Huss & D wins such a pure sound, are they nicer than a Martin? only time will tell. i have a D-35 and a Cort Earth 200 3TS the Cort is 10yrs old and has turned into a superb guitar, "you should try to source one"... but my Martin had lacquer problems, neck peeling, lifting from bridge area yadayada but all good now :) oh and nearly sounds as nice as the Cort.......who'da thought it ! but thats to my ears so :P ps i'll give ya $2001 for ya H&D :)

I used to think my 00015sm sounded amazing, then I got a D18 and I thought that sounded WTF.....then I got a D35 and I go into a trace when I play it and so I bought a D12/20 that sounds like a circus all to it's self. And now......Ooops.............. I have 4 Martins.

I really like Martin guitars and have played many. However, when I went to buy high end guitar I choose a Taylor 814ce. When I was playing a few Martins compared to the Taylor I just preferred the sound of the Taylor. Picking a guitar is a very personal decision. My other consideration is that I only live 1.5 miles from the Taylor factory. I'd like to get a Martin in the future to have other audio options.

Jeremy, No favorites. Like them all. More importantly (sarcasm), my pet peeve is playing guitar in a chair with arms on it! I don't know how you do it without banging the guitar. lol

You really need to get your hands on a Taylor 717 or 517. Slope shoulder very vintage almost dobro sounding. Taylor is targeting the Martin and Gibson players and actually switching them over after playing these two. Check them out!

Taylor is good no doubt about it. However they don't and will never sound like a Martin and there is nothing wrong with that. Let's see I can have a Martin or one trying to sound like Martin no brainer

@@BPToneReview It's funny every time a Taylor fanboy doesn't like what someone says they scream like little girls. I am entitled to my opinion just as you are. Just to be clear I live in Texas and played one at Alamo music in San Antonio. It's very good I'm not trying to claim they are not I just prefer Martin. I will give Taylor profs for setups they are great from the factory. Martin factory setups are terrible.

For at least 10 years I have seen the binding come off new Martin guitars including one I bought some years ago. .IIf they are going to charge thousands of dollars and use the Martin name you would think they would do a better job? Beware.

For the money, as far as new guitars, there are better options than Martin, and these are sooooo handmade as compared to Martin. How about Dowina, out of Slovakia. $2000 for their high end units can stand up to just about anything. Strictly speaking NEW here. That being said, a 30s or 40s Martin is very hard to argue with.

I can’t stand Performing Artist necks. I have owned 4 Martins and sold them all before I went with a slightly older guitar. Can tell this guy didn’t like the neck either lol.

I've played a few, and they are nice guitars, but when I can buy a $500 guitar that sounds just as good, why would I spend thousands? Most often it comes down to the prestige factor of owning the fancy name as much as actual playability. Gibson is no different. It's too bad that these companies price their guitars out of most people's acceptable ranges. They are nice and mostly well built, but for the cost, really not worth it.

I agree mostly. The biggest thing I see is residual value. You'll lose 50% on most import guitars. Martin and Gibson you'll lose 20-30% for a while and then they'll eventually be about back. So you'll only lose the inflation since purchasing.

@@JeremySheppard If I can't bring it camping or I have to lock it away because I'm terrified my kids or dogs will knock it over, what's the point? Instruments are made to be used. I own a Fender acoustic, a Peavy Hpex electric and a Jackson bass and they all sit on stands in the livingroom and get used weekly. I like them all and combined, with amps, cost half what a new Gibson or Martin accoustic would. To each their own I guess.

@@G_Demolished Your not wrong. But sound is personal to an extent. What sounds good to you may not be my cup of tea or vice versa. I bought my Fender because I liked the playability and sound of it and it had a modest price of $860. I used to have a nylon string guitar which had a beautiful sound and only cost me $250. True, a Martin is top quality guitar and will sound very good, but the difference in sound quality relative to price can be extreme. Most people can't or won't pay 5000+ for a guitar that sounds better than one that is under a grand unless you've got $ to burn. I'm not rich, famous or a pro musician, I personally couldn't justify that expense to my wife. My quad was 18k, but it has uses beyond being a toy, especially in winter. If I dropped $5000 on a guitar today, I'd probably be divorced tomorrow 😬

Huss and Dalton builds a much better guitar than Martin. Many small shops do.

All great guitars, although drastically overpriced. I take all-solid wood inexpensive guitars and re-scallop the bracing without taking the tops off, & I’ll take a $250 guitar that I just did and put it up against any of the guitars demonstrated.

Hot rodded, all solid wood, expensive guitars are awesome, but they still aren't quite the same. There's room for both.
