Not much reason not to! The R/T is a total parts-bin special of Dakota and Ram parts, so absolutely everything is available in massive quantity. You could refuse to put oil in your R/T, get a new engine everytime you blow one, and it'd still be cheaper per mile to service than a 911. Lol

I can confirm, this truck is absolutely stunning in person. It's bizarre to see a Dodge truck from this era that still has an interior and legible switches and knobs. The bed is also so clean it looks like no one even set as much as a cardboard box back there. It's truly incredible.

Man oh man. I loved these. I'm your age, and we had a 98 Durango SLT+ with the 5.9L when they came out. Loved that thing, my old man worked for Dodge for 9 years so he had demo's of just about everything and you're right... nothing is better than that Dakota. Even better that it's black, it's basically like a dream truck of mine too. They made those with manual transmission's too, damned shame it's auto. But still... just hearing that transmission hang into 2nd and 3rd took me back lol. Love it man.

@@RandomGuyDan Considering it only has a few original miles its still a bargain. Those Dakota R/Ts can be bought slightly used with 80k to 100k miles for like 5 grand even in this bideneconomy. Pristine interiors too, though in a decade they will be worth 30 grand even for a used one just like those old early 90s Ford and Chevy pickups today. For some reason the only car markets to appreciate are supercars and shitty 30-40 year old pickups.

To be honest, here in the UK (where car insurers are allowed to charge whatever they like), driving a truck to high school would be even more baller than a Mercedes. For reference I recently paid £1200 for insurance on my little 1.2 TDI Škoda Fabia Station Wagon (with 75hp). A truck would probably cost way over £8000 for a young person to insure.

Yes PLEASE don’t mod this gem! It’s absolutely perfect just the way it is. If you must do anything, make it super subtle looking, and so it can go back to 100% stock easily (It would be hard to resist making it louder as this is true music, not these goofy sounding things today with fake pops and backfires. That’s a tell tell sign of who is and isn’t an actual car person. Never met an real car person that actually likes those hilarious fake pops and bangs 🤣)

Funny, I figured Tyler for exactly the guy that would slap 20's on his truck in high school. I feel like we have very similar taste in cars. I had an old black Buick Riviera with a 5.7L V8, red vinyl interior and flames painted on it in high school. I would drive it today if I still had it, those cushy bucket seats, cloud like ride, and pinky finger light steering meant it was the most cushy, leisurely driving car I had ever owned, and I've owned a Cadillac DeVille. But for the guy putting bus seats in his Ferrari, the 20's off a Dodge Ram is not a stretch.

4.7 manual 2WD Dakota was probably the most fun truck to drive ever made. However with the 4.7 you do have to keep up on your fluids like it's a Ferrari; they do NOT tolerate deferred maintenance at all. The 5.9 is s bit if a tractor in stock form, but it can be modified endlessly and it doesn't mind if there are a few pounds of spiders in the oil.

In there day this gen Dakota was the king of the hill . I agree the 4.7 is one of there better engines and actually selected it over the 5.2 and 5.9 for it's design and better mpg the difference in performance was not that much vs the 5.9 . Great review
