I dunno dude. Every 50 yr old car is a project, regardless of sticker price. Get the details worked out and enjoy the hell out of it.

Who cares if it isn't correct and have flaws. All old cars have flaws, that's to be expected. You have something so many people really want at the end of the day.

I have 1970 Dodge Challenger 440 Rt/SE with all the options. They made few(7) 426 hemi Rt/SE. They made 426 hemi plain jane. Bench Seats, delete Radio, no chrome trim. What i see that you do not notice is engine color orange not red. Has the SE door panels, you can put Rally Dash, basic you have basic Challenger Dash.all minors fixes can be done. Wiring is noted for failure of oygendizing failer of gages, shorts and burnt connection. I had my Challenger now 50 years.

The Reverse not being ideal, is pretty on par with being correct for the car. The issue you're having with the roof is going to be worse than you think. According to your Fender tag it came with a White Vinyl Roof. I'm betting that leaked, the previous owner didn't do the restoration right, and half assed the areas that needed attention. You're going to have to properly fix this otherwise the same issue is going to keep coming up, no matter who re paints the car. Judging by a few other issues, you're going to have a lot of money/time in body work. Probably more than you bought the car for.

Good catch! The restoration was definitely far from ideal. I know a lot of work needs to be done on the car and work/costs will be extensive. I knew that going into the purchase, but nonetheless, I can't wait till she's all prettied up again. Thanks for your comment!

I enjoyed the video and I thought you brought across some wonderful points about buying an 'old' car plus the pitfalls of shipping from unreliable shippers that broker out their deliveries (schedule). In many instances they are brokered out to foreigners that don't even speak English and care nothing about the cars. It's a nasty part of the business. Many horror stories including your own about them joyriding the car. I would like to see your finished Challenger when ever you are done. I feel you bought it right and really the only thing horribly expensive to fix will be the new paint job unless something is 'hidden'. Enjoy it!

The wheels are cop wheels from the late 70's early 80's. Check Year one, you can get very nice cast aluminum rally wheels in 17x9 that will fit nicely. The c-pillar crack is an actual crack in the metal. I have the same crack, and it was caused by poor welding by whomever did the body work. Same goes with the other side, where the quarter panel meets the roof, that should be filled with lead, looks like they used filler. My guess is if you strip the paint down, you may be surprised, or not so much, the kind of work that was done. You want to upgrade your brakes, you can get power brake boosters that will fit a Hemi car. You don't want a fast car and not be able to stop. Upgrade your dash instruments to Dakota Digital. as far as the shifter goes, the original shifters are that difficult to shift. This one may need some lubrication or the shifter rods may be bent...the other thing to look at is make sure the engine mounts are not torn, specifically on the driver side.

If the torque boxes ain't upgraded to handle the torque, you're MAJORLY fucked. You also have to upgrade the frame rails with a cross brace to reinforce the frame rails at least with a 318 car. And some of these cars had the exhaust sticking out that far from the factory. 2 inches was usually the standard youd get from that production line. That's just how they did them to mass produce them. Their entire thought process was, "is it functional? Yes. Does it look good from 10 feet away? Yep. Then get it the hell out the damn door."

The car is pretty good for what it is. Just a few things else to check before finishing the process. Check to see if the car has had the frame torque boxes and sub frame connectors welded on. If not? Classic industries has the parts. Also super stock springs added while they are doing this work. The 383, 440 and 426 would of had these added at the factory for extra strength needed to handle the torque from these big engines. Also check the brakes and make sure they are the heavy duty units. Either front disk or 11” drum. The disk are a little better. The 318 came stock with much smaller units. Also the consol could come either with or with out. Also the dash instruments. Rallye gushes or the ones you have. Dash pad for a 70 has Challenger written out on it. After that it had a plaque. $60,000 is not a bad price actually for a car you can take out and drive regularly on the street. Not some numbers matching car that sits in a garage and collects dust. Because it’s too valuable to risk and is an investment. Nothing wrong with a car like that. But not as fun if you like driving them. Beautiful car and potential for having so much fun driving it out on the streets.

not a bad clone Bro, considering there are worse out there. this is a great start for a project car, i dont think you overpaid. I've restored one and currently own one so imo, you have some good tasks to do on this car to make it your own or your Father. at least its a metal car and not like the plastic car its parked next to (hahahaha!) good luck! post more vids.

Man I wish auto shop wouldn't have been taken out of high schools. So many lessons you could have learned and really need. Pretty only goes so far....a 51 year old car is not for people who don't know how they work, luckily you have money on top of the 60k you paid for this mess to buy your way out of it. We landed a really clean original 318 70 Challenger at $21k, which would leave us some $39k to be where you're at to build that same clone right. Glad you're happy and able to make it right, but ouch

Curious on how you know the engine is an original 1970 426? Only about 350 Challengers out of 77,000 came with it. It does have some strange restoration but wasn't hidden.

The car came with a fat book full of documentation regarding what work was done and when. Complete with installation dates & part numbers. Although the documentation could be wrong, seeing how meticulously it was documented, I'd be surprised if it was lying! The restoration was definitely odd.

MOPAR parts (at least for your Challenger) are NOT hard to get unless you are trying to find NOS. Crack open a Classic Industries catalog or one of the numerous companies out there (Speedway, Summit, JEGS, etc...) and there are lots of niche suppliers for things like interiors, electrical harnesses and other boutique items. That car looks like it's in Dynamite shape... hopefully you don't have to do much to correct the things you have planned. Enjoy! MOPAR or no car!

It did have a white vinyl roof originally. The "shop" is a local buddy of mine that works on these cars as a side gig. Good relationship with him! Pricing is fair. I knew to begin with this car needed a lot of work, but I love it.
