Oh... Aaron..........so sorry. Hurts me to see this ! I'll tell you. We have used those Fender Rubber strap locks for years and never had a problem. We have guitar straps ( not expensive ones) on all guitars we own so straps are never doing the on / off thing to go on another instrument. They are a b#tch to get on ......however that sucker is never comin off ! (Another reason why we DON'T take em off....too difficult ) !! 🤣🤣🤣You can also go to a local hardware store and get rubber washers.........same thing ! 🎸🎸🎸🎸 All the best with the repair. ❤

Fun fact: I’m a 56 year old Dutch guy and for as long as I can remember literally every guitar player in the Netherlands used this trick and they still do. And no, Fender didn’t make these back then. But the Dutch beer brand Grolsch used them on all of their beer bottles. These bottles had ceramic caps and those caps had these rubber rings to prevent the beer from leaking out of the bottle after you took a sip. I still use them on most of my guitars. After all, these things are free guitar savers. By the way, all those rings are red. I wouldn’t be surprised if a smart guy just started selling them in packages of four, using the same rubber rings. And now Fender sells them and they make ‘em in black as well. Cheers! 🍻

I had a Taylor 814ce fall off the strap. I now use the strap that had a buckle connection at the headstock. Only issue is sometimes you catch your thumb. Come down to Donovan’s tmoro if you are around!!

Great video. Great advice. I started using something similar about six months ago. I go to the hardware store and grab rubber washers that are just about the same size it seems to help. You’ll never see that damage on your guitar once the luthier fixes it up! You’re a lucky guy! :-)

I do the same thing (on my electrics) and I use a metal washer instead of the rubber. It means your strap is on permanently, because you are screwing it on (so to speak), but for an electric - I find it's a perfect solution. For acoustic, maybe I'd use those rubber washers so I can take them off when putting the guitar in a hard case.

The damage does not seem to be too bad, and a good luthier could make even the splinters disappear without too much trouble. Aaron at Warmoth has a nice video on strap button vs strap locks, which was pretty informative and conclusive for me.

Those rubber rings are really hard to get off (probably a good option if you don't remove your strap). When I tried them, I worried I would cause more damage (like ripping out the strap button screw) trying to take them off! I actually ordered a set of Dunlop Lok Straps, to see if they will work better (especially for removing). I had the same thing happen to me recently on my Les Paul; somehow I caught it before it hit the ground. So, glad I saw your video, and hopefully the Dunlop Lok Strap will work, because you never know when it will happen!

I usually use a Lock-It Strap when I play Electric guitar (it has a strap lock built into the strap; they started selling them at Sweetwater) ... but they do not work that well on an acoustic guitar with a strap button that has a jack in the strap button.

Sorry about the guitar. I have been using these type of locks for a few years now since my Gibson Firebird took a tumble. I didn't think about any issues with the Nitro finish as it is on the outside of the strap but I will have to take a look I guess. Peace.

Man this sucks, I'm sorry. There is something about the strap being in the spot like on your cole clark that bothers me when playing. I much rather prefer it where martin puts it. "Funny" enough, my Dean Colt piezo has it on the back and it, too, fell from me shoulder. Fortunately I caught it before it hit the ground with my picking hand and my foot. Have never had an issue with the martin spot. I'm not sure how I managed to get the Dean to fall but you bet I have strap locks now. Hope the Cole Clark is able to be fixed without too much trouble or lingering issue.
