Low pressure oil pump. Check the high pressure oil pump reservoir. The oil pressure gauge isn’t moving when cranking. You have no oil going to the high pressure oil pump. It opens the injectors in a huei system. I’ve had it happen in my old 7.3

It’s easy to get to. It’s behind the harmonic balancer. If you pull the plug on the high pressure oil pump reservoir and it is empty then you need a new low pressure oil pump. You can also put a pressure tester there. I don’t know the spec though

The oil pressure gauge didn’t even move when you were cranking it; like you and a lot of other people mentioned, the fuel injection system on the PowerStroke engine is hydraulically actuated via a high pressure oil pump, which is fed by the low pressure oil pump, which also feeds the main lubrication system of the engine. Everything hinges on that oil pump working 100% of the time or the truck doesn’t start.

@@edwardcarberry1095 That will only tell you whether or not the fuse is blown though. If the terminals that the fuse is sitting in are corroded they won't conduct electricity even though the fuse itself might be fine. That's why you HAVE to pull the fuses on old cars that have been sitting for a while. It takes more time but this way you can be certain that neither the fuses nor the fuse panel are the issue. But you are correct, a multi meter or a fuse checker are very handy to have.

Tavarish, I own a 7.3 Powerstroke and have worked on them for about 20 years now. You need to disconnect the ICP sensor. Then take a look in the sensor connector for oil residue, if it’s there, the sensor has failed, replace it, it’s a fairly common problem with this sensor, especially aftermarket units. While it’s disconnected go ahead and crank the engine again, the computer defaults to a failed ICP table and will run with the sensor disconnected. Oddly enough, a failed ICP will actually cause a no-start, and the emergency fix is simply to unplug it. If it runs with it unplugged, put a new ICP sensor on it. Keep in mind, if you introduce air into the high pressure oil system, you have to either crank it until you get enough pressure to start it and push the air through the injectors by driving the snot out of it. If your scan tool will actually communicate with the truck, check for ICP pressure cranking, if it’s 0 MPa, replace the sensor. The only other issue it could be is an IDM, but they’re honestly more reliable than the Internet would make you believe.

Sometimes when trying to start a 7.3 after it's sitting for an extended amount of time, it will take up to 10 minutes of cranking to fully bleed the injector system of air bubbles. Also if you can check resistance of the circuits in the idm or use a Ford IDS to monitor all data while cranking.
@raysreef2529
@raysreef2529 3 жыл бұрын
Fords have a problem with the plastic insulation shrinking and backing out of the fuel injector plugs. Check if the plastic insulation pulled back in the injector connectors underneath the valve covers. You would have to remove the valve covers and inspect the wire connectors leading to the injectors. This would cause a no start condition if the insulation is pulled back and exposed to the oil.

@Tech_Otter
@Tech_Otter 3 жыл бұрын
The needle that shows the position of the shifter is likely just off or broken. ChrisFix did a video on it a few years ago and it's a common issue with truck of that era as it's all mechanical/analog and the components are often plastic. If the truck was in gear the engine wouldn't crank at all. It's a safety feature programed into the ECU to only engage the starter in Park or Neutral.

I own a 1999 7.3. Here are some tips 1. There is no oil pressure gauge, the gauge is an 'idiot light' or on off. 1.5 The wait to start light also doesn't do anything, it's just a dumb timer. 2 CPS is the camshaft sensor. They make a black, grey and purple one. My truck only runs with the black one. 3. ICP can be disconnected for troubleshooting, ecm defaults to 'safe setting'. 4. This engine will NOT start with a bad glow plug relay. Bypass using jumper cables. 5. Passing buzz test indicates ICM and IDM should be OK. 5.5. Get a OBD2 scanner that shows ICP pressure to rule out HPOP. 6. Verify your wipers are working on all settings. There is a common leak from windshield that ruins fusebox and wipers not working point to that. Good luck!

Hey tavarish. I have worked on this motor and all 7.3l will need the hpop or high pressure oil pump replaced at some point and that may be your issue. The part you replaced is connected to the hpop and has a check ball on the other side of the "non serviceable plug" so if you decide to replace it remember to put that check ball on the front side of the plug before screwing in the plug on the hpop or it won't start. Front side meaning the part away from the engine. There are two versions of this pump so you will need to figure out what version you have. Despite many people saying you have to remove the fuel bowl you don't need to, to do this job. Hope this helps you in any way. Enjoy the videos and keep it up

@@jakebailey5033 nope. You don't have to wait until they go out. In fact, they may stay on for 2 minutes. Contrary to popular belief, that wait to start light doesn't tell you when the glow plugs are on, it's a PCM commanded light not actually connected to the glow plugs at all. If you want a light to tell you, wire one in to the GPR, output side obviously. Super easy. Don't get me wrong, you need to wait for the plugs, but not doing so won't kill the engine. Stop throwing parts at it and get a scanner that will show everything you need. IPC Pressure, cam position censor ect. I have an AE and it works great. The only thing it will not show is low pressure fuel pressure. You can check this with a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel bowl. Also check the small tank in front of the fuel bowl to make sure it is full of oil. This is the tank that feeds the injectors. If it does not have oil in it fill it up. The cause could be a bad engine oil pump or old oil.

If oil level is good go ahead and pull codes, itll give you a direction to look into.

To all the people jumping up and down about it not starting in reverse, sit down. If that was an issue, it wouldn't crank at all. The indicator is just off. Check the IDM for water inside it. Humidity collects and pools up inside until it's deep enough to start corroding the circuitboard, definitely possible in Florida. Pull the IDM, shake it, listen for water sloshing. I had this happen twice on my 7.3. I also like the low pressure oil idea, but unless I'm mistaken neither of these things should give you that weak/absent tach signal.

Freddie, grab a scan tool and look at oil pressure and fuel pressure. Make sure no codes are in the system. Ecms fail all the time. Prone to water. In florida, thatll do it.You can have a code but no check engine light for ecm failure on these. If the ecm is ok, monitor the data. Check oil pressure and fuel pressure. It has to have at least 500 psi to start for the icp to operate. Also make sure the ground to the ecm and wiper motor is clean. I know it sounds crazy but trust me. Its located on the driverside of the firewall, just below the wiper cowl. Should have 2 large eye connectors, a stud, and a nut. You have no check engine light when cranking. This indicates an ecm issue. If your ford does not illumimate the check engine light with igntion on, its an ecm issue.

Did you check the voltage on both batteries, they both need to be fully charged. Here is what I used to do on a cold morning, wait 15 seconds, start turning the Engine, mash my foot down on the throttle, listen for ignition, leave foot full down on throttle until diesel gets revs then slowly back off throttle until engine is running stably and normally it dies, curse Ford at least three times, this helps, then repeat and finally go inside make a cup of coffee and wait for like 15 minutes. It’s good to put the truck near a marshy place with a lot of mosquitoes so the saturated diesel exhaust fumes will kill as many bugs as possible before it warms up. Once you get it started see if you can find some poor sucker to buy it.

The first place I look on the 6.9 and 7.3 International motors is the fuel filter housing. They’re cast aluminum and crack over time (just like the clutch brackets in these trucks do all the time), introducing air to the fuel rails and causing a severe lack of bang bang. Depending on where your Fuel Pressure Sensor is located, you’ll be getting a bad read and a false sense of security.

Look into 7.3 top end oil change. The oil which drives the injectors is supposed to circulate with the entire contents of the crankcase, but after some time this can be proven to not always be the case. Basically you’re going to suck 3 quarts out through the top of the engine and replace it with new oil and an additive to break down any sludge. Repeat about 3 times and you’ll be driving a brand new ‘99 dirty fird.
