This turned out great. If the middle support ever did start to split, you could add a metal collar/belt just before the notch.

I hope you don't mind a suggestion. You might need some ventilation holes in the ply, otherwise mould can grow in the trapped condensation. A hole saw applied at regular intervals, would do the job. Beautiful project, and lovely to see reclaimed wood being used.

You have an uncanny knack of casually showing a genius idea. Centre rail of your bed, many times I've put a screw in to repair a split step cut in the end of a Timber, have I ever thought to put a screw in before it splits? NOPE!!!! I've 40 years of experience making and repairing stuff and this is not the first time watching your channel I've thought - Why the hell didn't I think of that?

Love the idea of returning material from the house in a new form. I’ve made mantles, bench seats and vanity tops from old floorboards and wall cladding in our 1870s timber framed house. It feels great to know that the material is having a new life and makes the extra work worth it. Your final product looks amazing.

7:31 That made me wince. I had kickback from a very similar cut to that. Still have a slight scar. Nice bed. I made my own too - pine - and it weighs a lot. I ended up reinforcing the corners with massive corner braces and coach bolts because the bed hardware loosened as metal plates can give. Solid. Nice finishing work. You did something really good there.

Great looking bed, Keith - love the reclaimed element. Just an FYI on the center support, I ran a furniture/mattress store for many years and the number one reason for mattress warranty claims was sagging in the middle. Your center rail looks strong but you might want to check and see if the mattress warranty has a clause about requiring a center support leg. Keep up the great work!

Hi Keith, I like the style of this simple bed, but I would recommend giving the mattress the opportunity to breathe, the air needs to circulate under the mattress, that's one of the reasons beds have slatted bases/frames. Otherwise the wooden panels will start to mold relatively quickly. Greetings Ben

Really nice build! Looks absolutely stunning! One small thing that's not the end of the world but you do need to keep an eye on. As far as I understand the bottom of the bed/matrass is now closed off? It's actually better to keep holes in there for ventilation of the bottom side of the matrass. Otherwise you run the risk getting a slightly damp bottom of the matrass as well as some mold eventually. Turning the matrass enough can prevent this, but personally I would just make some holes in the bottom.

@AndreaArzensek

The bed looks fantastic. Congratulations! I may be wrong but I think you should add some holes in that plywood for ventilation as mold could start developing at the bottom of the mattress due blocked to air flow. Also, it is good practice to flip the mattress periodically (if it's designed that way).

What a fantastic result. I really like the chevron detail to the head and foot boards and the mix of finishes to ensure a consistent colour. I've a superking bed with underbed storage in my order book and I think I'm going to use the bed-hardware you featured, the alternative are bed bolts which require visible fixings on the outside of the bed which these avoid. A question though, now you have had use of the bed, is there anything you'd change in the construction or design if you were to tackle the project again? Plus, I'm guessing that new bed-side tables will be a future project ???
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Karl. Yeah the hardware is actually really good, despite having to make a few adjustments, very solid. The only thing I would change is that I'd make the bed about 1-2 inches shorter in height, but a bit nitpicky. It's still sitting height but taller than my old bed - maybe I just need to get used to it!

I understand your going for a "Fine Furniture" bed. For me I typically don;t acre about matching my timbers on a project. Its re-used, I'm happy to show that. I'm also increasingly saddened we don't see the Oak hatstands make an appearance anymore .....
