This was a challenge from a long time viewer who commissioned me to build him a Mark Sandman (from the band Morphine) tribute bass. Apparently Mark played this pawn shop bass that he heavily modified into a two string bass meant to be played by a slide. Contact me if you're interested having me build one for you, price is $1,500 shipped with a hard case. Or if you want to build one yourself, here are the parts I used:
Electronics plate: amzn.to/3xwjxzr
Mini toggle switch (for series/parallel): amzn.to/3jDWOJM
Bridge: amzn.to/3M6vrnD
String retainer bar: amzn.to/3KP4WTw
Glass slide: amzn.to/3EjIYpx
Flatwound bass strings (the only set w/ 55 and 75 gauge): amzn.to/3M7o5Aj
Bone nut: amzn.to/3jGbfNc
Tuners: amzn.to/3jKEm1Y
Zinsser Shellac: amzn.to/3jMTDiI
Tru Oil finish: amzn.to/3JNJugi
Neck: amzn.to/3Em42LR
Pickups: epiccustomshop...

So I’m actually the soon-to-be owner of this bass and I just wanted to chime in and say how cool of a guy Dan is and how easy he is to work with. I did indeed give him complete creative control on this build. As long as it had the functionality, I was happy. This FAR exceeded my expectations, and they were already really high. It’s very in line with the original bass but still has Dan’s flavor in it. It’s an amazing tribute to Mark Sandman and I cannot wait to have it.

Mark was a nice guy. Cool to see you build this. My high school art teachers son was Dana the sax player. He used to bring their early demos in to class to play all the time, and my buddies sister used to date the drummer, Mark wrote the song “Claire” about her. We used to go watch them play around Boston all the time.

Just fantastic! I saw Morphine a good number of times when they came through Seattle in the 90's. My wife was acquainted with Dana (saxist in the band) so we always went to see them. I got a chance to play Mark's bass briefly and it was super simple and somewhat crude, sort of like what I'd imagine EVH's Frankenstein to be, but it was perfect. And man, the sound was undeniable right out of the gate. You could hear their sound a mile away. Watching this build makes me want to make my own with spare parts (I'm no luthier). Brilliant job!

Guns and Guitars You can always convert it into a 4 String Bass (since you have all 4 Tuners on the Headstock), you just need to make a new nut, add 2 more saddles to the bridge, & new pickups. So w/ the D & G Strings added (tuned C, G) you can add a High C, & a High F tuned down a half step so now you'll have C, G, C, E

I have to say, you're the first person I know to actually copy Marks Bass. 👍🏾 Being an original Generation X, tip of the spear. My era was the early mid 80's we didnt think we would live to see 30. (That whole cold war thing) there was not a lot of bands/music i dug past 93 but Morphine was one of them. I played Bass in a ska band back between 1987-1994. Ive always been into firearms. I actually had an idea back around 1990 to do a MAGAZINE called Guns, Guitars and Gals. Doing what your doing but adding the hottest female musician, actor and maybe athlete.

Tbh I don't know when I subbed, but it was years ago when I was trying to build a tele kit and wanted some tips. Everything from the self fabricated tools, to the cheap but easy fixes on those kits. Then off course Guns & Guitars (subjects which I like). But I gotta say hats off to you Dan. Also being a Christian, having the balls to complete throw your life around and living in an RV and overall you seem like a nice guy. Normally I kind of dislike it when channels go succesfull bc it often becomes really corny/cheesy and pretty clear who's paying the bill behind the scenes and seeing channel content completely change from their original concept. But you're the guy I think everyone was always rooting for. Awesome build, great video and your growth over the past few years is admirable, truly 💪 Cheers (from a longtime fan from The Netherlands)
