Yup, backed out of building a custom keyboard like 3 times over several years, and that was after I had already owned a couple MKs and a couple keycap sets and understood most of the basics that were reviewed in this video. You really need to limit your expectations too, some "simple" ideas can cost insane amounts to actually make, if it's even possible at all without spending thousands to mold them yourself. If you try to go for somthing too out there, chances are you won't get what you were looking for and you won't like it much, if it even functions at all as a whole. Good to research some basics, and check what parts are actually available before getting too invested in any ideas. Though researching for too long can also change that availability. But happily I've almost got my first keyboard build all wrapped up, just waiting on switch lube, but has been well worth all the time and effort, and I'm glad I held off all those times to get somthing that I know I'll love and that I could 100% actually put together for a reasonable price (atleast as far as MKs go)

First steps of consideration before even buying parts or even considering building a custom keyboard: what size you like, what are your priorities? (sound (deep, high pitch, silent) , feel (tactile or linear), type of case materials, key cap profiles (most standard ones are cherry), what theme (if you care) you want to go for (so what color case and keycaps colors/themes you want to create for your build.

The trick with stovetop waffle irons is 1. plenty of oil. Brush both sides before filling the waffle maker with batter. 2. The batter. Make sure you use a waffle specific mix or recipe. 3. Temperature. You're going for crispy waffles, so the temperature should be pretty high. I usually use medium to medium-high heat with my waffles. 4. Time. Let the waffle cook for 4-5 minutes per side. Do not open it early to "check" them. This will just weaken the middle of the waffle so that when you open it when it's done, your waffle will split in half.

Hahaha this video was so fun. Reminds me that I haven’t thought about mech keys in a while. I have a really cool kit that I bought like 4 years ago when I was stress shopping in college and never got around to building (didn’t have a space to solder, or time to do it). I should pull all that out now and finally build that! Thanks for the inspiration Sara!

I'd massively recommend starting custom keyboards with a full kit, like a KBDFans 67 kit or something and go from there. It's certainly a great community and a deep rabbit hole, I've gone from using a Redragon with Outemu Blues, l;ater swapped out for browns, to now using a custom board I designed and built using Lubed Gateron Yellows. Everything I learnt about it from the community, it's been a really great experience.

@@Adem-nl8pd because this video is introducing a huge amount of people to custom keyboards, and instead of showing people that there are alot of popular switches outside of cherry mx switches, as well as trying them yourself. Using browns is lazy and makes this a pretty bad video imo

Thats the beauty of custom keyboards is that no one has to build what makes sense but only you just them. As an example im building a main 65% keyboard because I dont have much desk space since a 43 in wide desk is all I can fit in my room and I could grab both ends of it with no problem. I'm planning on building another 60 dedicated exclusively for macros for editing photos and videos because I dont have space on my desk for a stream deck and just want something I can truly customize to my experience.

@@MidnightMuzic 65/60% is pointless when 75% exists. Why forfeit the function row..?
@MidnightMuzic
@MidnightMuzic 3 жыл бұрын
@@beanwithbacon You really missed the whole message man. For someone who edits photos and videos as a side hustle where time is money those function keys won't be enough to do anything with. To me those are absolutely useless in my case and a big eye sore cosmetically. Also since space is an issue for me, like I said before id rather just have a dedicated macro board with all custom short cuts that I can just plop in my lap and hit without having to look. Again thats MY preference though. Also just to really trigger you go look up a board called the 27 keys of pain then tell me thats useless 🙂

If she instead built a 65% and did extensive research before building a mechanical keyboard AND MOST IMPORTANTLY try and find the switch type that you find comfortable with it would have been better.

All these keyboard nerds asking about switches when they're all passing over the glaring issue of using micro-usb.
@tybera1114
@tybera1114 3 жыл бұрын
Why is that an issue? Keyboards don't need to use USB-C (no keyboard uses anywhere near the full capacity or power as they just poll at 1khz). Many keyboards using QMK firmware don't even work properly USB-C to USB-C without the proper orientation unless they set the daughter board up to cross. As such, switches and switch feel (and cost to quality ratio) is way more important than what plug you use. There are generally better feeling tactile switches out there, for much less money, than Cherry Browns. Kailh Pro Purples come to mind as well Gateron Brown off the top of my head. For not much more you can pick up Aliaz silent tactile switches as well and those have a much better sound and feel. That being said, no the plug doesn't matter functionally at all, especially not compared to the switches. But it's hotswap, so she can get a tester or a sample pack and pop em in.

That kb is cuuuute :-) I did not make my own, but I own a "classic" Model M from Unicomp, evoking the feeling of the incomparable IBM Model M of long ago. I could not comfortably type in a 40% sized keyboard, but maybe in the future (if Argentina ever recovers to the point where importing parts is practical again), I will try my hand and build a full size custom one. Probably with Cherry MX blues hehe.
