I Built The Best Segment Stop I Have Ever Used Wood Turning

I made myself a segment stop.
I did not invent the mouse trap. Most segment stops work in the say way.
This is based on other tools I have used and other jigs I have made over the years.
The measuring section is based on something my milling machine had on it
It was also a stop for cutting things to length. So these things date back well over 100 years ago.
!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!!
Had surgery yesterday, Ankle has two . I will wear a splint for 2 weeks. Then a support boot and maybe one of those cool scooters to race around on LOL. I had a block at the angle so feel nothing and this will last for a24-36 hours. Then the pain will be back and I will take a strong pain medicine.. My comments may not be much but I will acknowledge all of them. Best I can do for now. Thanks so much, Gary

I've just replied to your email from last week, Gary. Then, I got a text from Tuffy telling me he saw your video this morning and your explanation. I will watch the whole video but as you might imagine, I skipped right to your explanation, first thing. I'm glad you've had the surgery and got that part over with. Now the healing begins. Sounds like it is going to take awhile and be painful. For that, I'm truly sorry. I will be praying for you, my friend. As everyone is saying, just take your time to get it right, we'll be here each week for whatever you have to share. Best wishes, buddy. Phil

Thank you very much Phil, You know that old saying: We do not bounce like we used to! It is true so true. I have bounced many times over the years without breaking a bone. Except for one that I try and forget. For sure I will take my time. My nurse(Laverna is finally resting...she has worked very hard taking care of me. This will drive me crazy not being able to turn. But I do like designing on the computer. Thanks for your prayers my friend they mean a lot to me. The block is slowly wearing off and will have to take the pain pills which I hate. But need Gary

Get well, my friend. Personally.... Seeing more 3D printing applications for Woodturning would be the "jam on my biscuit"!! Bring it on!! I just helped our school woodshop guy turn a replacement spinner handle for the table saw. I made 2 PLA bushings with 7mm bore. Printed a ⅜" OD on the inner shoulder and a ½" OD on the outer shoulder. Used 100% infill to fight the compression and heat from friction. We used a standard 7mm pen turning mandrel to do the turning and the finishing. Our Sawstop now has a stabilized walnut handle with 10 coats of WaterLox... Almost student proof!! Get well, Gary

Thank you very much Dave! You have given me some wonderful ideas for 3D printing. I have some missing handles and things. And I sure do love the 3D printer. I remember when the pattern shop I worked at first got into rapid proto type they got an LOM machinel Hired a young engineer(not mechanical) to set things up. I ended up designing the first part made on it. A working crescent wrench. Just so they could try it out. Did a bunch of other parts as well. They went on to get 3D printers and not sure what they have down there now. I had nothing to do with those printers though. I preferred building patterns from drawings. But as you know I do love the technical stuff as well. Thanks my friend, Gary

First off, get well soon. My goal for this year is to make some segmented bowls (open and closed). The timing of this video was perfect as I have plans for the sled to build, now thanks to you I have the stop. I will be going with the CNC and 3D printed method as I have those tools in my shop. But I loved how you showed it could be made without them. I have always admired your work and love watching your videos. Many others are too short to be informational, and others seem too long where it is difficult to remain focused (at least for me). Having a 3D printer, I look forward to some of your videos on 3D printed accessories. Thanks for all you do for this hobby.

Thank you very much Robert. Being busy with something is my best medicine. So showing 3D modeling and segment software will help a lot. Having CNC is really nice and I love the 3D printer as well. Happy you enjoy my videos and will be back to wood turning as soon as I get the OK. Thank you, Gary

Gary, I wish you well in your recovery. Your detailed, step-by-step tutorials are much appreciated. I have learned so much from your down to earth approach and easy to understand instructions, whether it is building jigs or creating a new turning. I love doing segmented work and have used your designs and concepts for a number of bowls. I also use Segmented Pro (from the Woodturner Pro folks) for creating many of the bowls and vessels I have made. I have also made a stop jig for sawing segments, but I love your design and can't wait to make it myself. Take care and hope you get back into the shop soon.

Thank you very much Bruce. I bought the whole package from WTP so have access to all of them. Segment Pro is a great program but I like the freedom that WTP gives me. I can make more changes for different things. Mostly being able to mix ring thickness. Happy you enjoy my videos and will be back to turning soon. Hoping no more than a month but will listen to the doctor. Thanks for our wishes on the recovery. Gary

The 90 degree adjustable stops with the measurement guide are a lot more accurate with smaller angle cuts. However you will notice a discrepancy between your set SEL length and the actual SEL length at large angles. The actual SEL lengths will always be larger than the measurement of the gap in the gauge. Simply geometry. It typically isn’t a major problem but I was scratching my head for a while trying to figure out why they were different when I first made mine. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 ай бұрын
Thanks Rick. Yes they will be off a little. What I did was pulled the stop away from the blade a given amount. So it would cut a known length along the the segment. I then set the opening on the jig to 1" The blade will not measure that in a straight line from the stop but it still cuts the 1 inch needed. This should work on all the segments that are cut lets say for 18 segments per ring. So the stop is really a little closer to the blade than 1 inch. At least it worked that way for me.

Gary, I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune but I'm glad you're ok! I enjoy the videos you make regardless of whether they're about turning or not. I am not a patient jig maker. I am always in a hurry to make what I'm making that creating a jig to make that thing is an unwanted delay but they do come in handy. One of the things I noticed in this video is that it looks like you modified your table saw insert to make it a zero clearance one. That might need further explaining. :) Anyway, please take care of YOURSELF and don't worry about your followers! We'll be here! Hopefully, you will still have a happy new year!! Just no dancing at midnight on New Year's Eve! Rick

Thank you Rick. And thanks for your best wishes. So that jig has a 45 degree ramp added to allow the pieces to slide away from the blade. Works good but like with all spinning things you want to keep an eye on them building up. I love making jigs and plan them out on paper of my CAD program most of the time. I love doing that as well. When you make the jig every this is clear it it is a matter of cutting the pieces out. Gary

Gary. That is part of life, and we don't bounce like we used to. I have been down this road with shoulder surgery. The worst part is not being able to work in the shop. The rehab is second worst part. I'm sure you will design many wonderful projects to build as soon as you are well. We will all be here with you and learning from your teaching. We might even get to build one of your projects before you do. We will be praying for a complete and quick recovery. I have learned so much from your video's. This was my new year project to design a new stop for my segmented turning. Now you have done it for me. I just have to go build it. Can't wait to see what is next.

Thank you Barry. Not much spring in my bounce for sure. I did not do bad crawling to get to the door though. I think you will find this one easy to do. My thought was a screw so you could count the turns. Way to slow for me. Most of this is based on the smaller milling machine I recently sold. There were two stops. You set one at the begining of the cut and cranked till the touched. This method goes back hundreds years. So it is just like the bed and the ways on a milling machine if you think about. Gary

Thank you Dave. Sounds like you are making the best you can do. That is a good thing. I do have a few other fixtures to make. Thanks that have been around for other uses but will help us wood turners a lot. I have them but not gone into detail. My lathe is too high use sitting down. Maybe time for a mini lathe...hmm I will wait the 6 weeks. Surgery was yesterday. With the blocker no pain at all. But I feel it wearing off. Gary

Hi Gary, I just watched the video for about the third time and managed to catch some of the key words that you said (i guess im a little slow in the hearing department) and found the miter slot parts of which you spoke. For about $20.00 I got 2 sets of parts. Thanks, now I've got another project after I finish my saw mill sled for ripping logs into planks. Your jig that you did for cutting your wafers is my foundation for this project. I will post pictures on Facebook when done. Thanks for your investment of time for making these videos and hope that leg is healing well.

Glad you’re going to be ok. I shattered my heel in Jan 2021 and was non-weight bearing for 14 weeks. This was less than 3 months after buying my first big boy lathe. It was devastating. I ended up getting an I-Walk (kind of a peg-leg replacement from the knee down) after going crazy for 4-5 weeks that gave me enough mobility to return to the shop. I was procuring log pieces and cutting them up with a chainsaw. Probably not the smartest thing, but I was being careful. The I-Walk looks funny and feels dangerous to start, but in the 9-10 weeks I used it, I only came close to falling one time n the living room. That was because I let my guard down in a familiar environment and stumbled on a kid’s toy. Good luck in the surgery and have a speedy recovery.

Gary, Sorry about your fall and resulting injuries. I can relate to falling in my shop too, but I didn't have broken bones or torn ligaments. We "old folks" just don't lift our feet as high anymore and therefore are more susceptible to falls. Enjoyed the making of the segment stop and will make one. I have one that has similar adjustable stops, but has limitations on accuracy. Get healed and I will continue to watch your excellent talents work. I have a basic CNC and haven't taken it out of the box, but am anxious to get it setup and use it. All the best!
