I’ve worked for Vw/audi group for 22 years and totally agree it is one of the best engine ever produced!

Thanks for the video. It brought me mixed emotions. I had a 2001 Y reg silver Golf GT TDI 115. I bought it at 15 years old with 120k on the clock. One overriding feeling was the quality of it. No knocks, bangs, rattles, super smooth, it felt really well put together, just pure quality that belied it's age. The bodywork had no rust either. If you hadn't have known you would have sworn you were driving a 3 or 4 year old car. Sadly and despite a great history from a VW specialist, I only owned the car for a couple of months. The car suffered from major head gasket problems. I'm still not sure to this day if it was just the gasket or also a problem with the block. Research at the time revealed that the 115 was a bit of an anomaly amongst the other super reliable and long-lived engines. A weakness in the design of specifically the 115 lead to a lot of head gasket failures usually above 100k miles that usually manifested between 100k and 130k miles. I'm sure that if my Golf had had any other version of that engine, it would have still been running to this day.

I have a 6Y Fabia VRS with the PD130, has 220,000 miles on the clock, still runs like an absolute peach. Great powerplant!

the common rail system was a huge improvement compared to the old style injection pumps, old school injection pumps were extremely limited in the maximum pressure as well as injection duration, number of injection cycles and the timing which were all controlled mechanically within the pump, an in between system was the hybrid pumps used on the 2.5tdi v6 engine where there was more electronic control of the timing, the pd's are fantastic being electronically fired and the commonrail takes that a step further by taking the pumping job out the injector to an extremely high pressure pump and fuel rail which feeds all the injectors hence common rail, the injectors are electronically fired and have extremely tight timing and duration control for better efficiency and emissions but the improved atomisation also allows for better power too. I bought my other half a pd130 a3, it was actually a year older than the 1.2 clio we had just scrapped and was half the price to insure, it's just ticked over the 100k mile mark and still goes like stink!

I currently own a mk7.5 GTD, which is my second ever diesel car and I’m loving the balance of power and economy. Had a golf 1.5 tsi before and it didn’t match it in either of those areas!

Had the 1.4 TDI PD in a 2001 Polo, owned the car for about 14 years, Engine super sweet, took it to about 200k, a few cambelt kits, always gave it the 505.01 oil. only unplanned mechanical item replaced was the Fuel/Tandem pump and not because it didnt work because the cover was leaking diesel and you just couldn't buy a cover plate gasket. Unfortunately rust will see that car finally off the road as it was starting to get very grotty on front sub-frame and rear axle.

Oh, yes!! I've got a MK4 Variant in Reflex Silver with the PD130 ASZ engine - although mine's barely run in at 107k mileage, it had 79k when I purchased it in March 2018. Mine's SE-spec as well. Got the same water leak in mine. Mine's very roly-poly with the ride - it's got the original shock absorbers on all four corners. I generally average around 63-65mpg. I regularly (if driven carefully!) get over 700 miles from the 55L tank. I came for the Audi 80, but I'll definitely stay to see this MK4 TDI Variant!! If you've not already done it I'd enjoy seeing the injector change, tools required etc. The water leak will be useful for myself, no doubt others, too! Mine isn't the sunroof model although everybody seems to suggest sunroof drains. Just booked mine into the local VW specialist garage to have it's timing belt done (water pump, tensioners, aux belt, tensioners for that, A/C regas, gearbox mount - quite the list, but I hope it will be worth it) in a couple of weeks time. I noticed your windscreen scuttle is damaged and you're missing both the clips either-side of it by the hinge - I hope you can source a replacement. I'll have to keep checking eBay for injectors if you managed to get four for £55, that's a steal! All the best Andrew, great video. Really looking forward to seeing more.

Agree 100% on the tdi pd. Without doubt the best engine I’ve had was the 130 bhp. The replacement 2.0 tdi is boring. Great content Mr Wizard 👍

Love this engine, I had 2 golfs and a sharan 130, love the torque. I’ve now got kids so a 1.6 tdi caddy and polo, but my best car I will never sell is my 1.4 tdi 3 cylinder. 80 bhp from factory, I’ve done a stage two chip and it absolutely flies off the line( now 105 bhp).

Bought a 2003 MK4 in 2007 with 117K miles. 13 years later , now with 228K Miles ....I've serviced it every year, replaced brake disks/pads etc ,original suspension changed to coilovers (for the lows) at 165K Miles and a turbo , probably due to remapping and stuck VNT vanes. Never replaced a bush or bearing. Never failed an MOT on anything serious. Now running 180 BHP, still get regular 50+ Mpg, and 60+ mpg on motorway runs. This is the best car I've had and the best overall car I think I will ever have- quick, ecoconical, comfortable....and very cheap to run. @Volkswizard- Good buy for a quid mate!

I had the 1.9 TDi in a 2009 Mk5 Golf, DPF equipped and with 7-speed DSG. I particularly enjoyed the effortless mid-range performance (184 lb/ft torque) and easy economy. On longish motorway trips, I would “play” with getting the trip average speed to 60 mph and the overall trip economy to 60 mpg, which I found perfectly doable over a 250 mile end to end journey. Had absolutely no problems with the DPF over a 5 year/65,000 miles ownership period, the DSG transmission helped a lot here as when it was “regenerating” the ‘box would hold lower gears to keep rpm in the optimal regen engine speed range.

Thanks for posting your fitting tribute to this great engine, Andrew 👍 Used in so many different VW group platforms from the Ibiza Cupra's (160bhp!) right up to the Audi A6. They knew they were onto a winner. My beloved Bora is the PD130 - it does really shift, has never missed a beat in 130k miles, and easily gets 60+mpg on a run. It will be a sad day when it eventually has to go. You're right... I was very pleasantly surprised with the shove on the test drive !

I had an 02 Beetle TDI bought to replace my MK2 Golf GTI. The Beetle was quite nippy and put a smile on my face. However 2 problems. The turbo pipe needed replacing because of a broken lug and the wiring in the head needed replacing after encountering periodic misfire. Back to driving my MK2 GTI now though!

I had a 2001 130tdi estate SE in black as a company car back in the day. It felt quick despite the boot choc full of copier spares and manuals. I specced it up to those votex 16" 5 spoke alloys to. The interior of yours brought back happy memories out on the road. I'd love it one day to buy another one and get Darkside to work their magic on it :)

I owned a 1.8T from 90 to 160k and experienced most of them! Although they are great cars for that era. If it hadn’t have been ruined by a freak golf ball sized (ironic) hailstorm, I’m sure I’d still be driving it now!

Cool video! I own a mk5 golf estate 1.9 tdi 2009 last of the P.D's... it's on 10000 miles now and I'm pretty sure it will do another 40000 if I keep up with the maintenace, which I will! I love it, its' an SE so if I add a sat nav it's got all the bits and bobs a brand new car has and trust me it drives like it's new, still!

I love VW diesels and have had many, unfortunately here in Sweden the diesel prices have been raised so its not economical anymore. So I went for a 15' Cupra ST instead. Totally fun car too, just bought it a week ago so still getting used to the power and brakes (Brembo). Still miss the torque and economy of the diesels and reckon the manufacturers will eventually make them cleaner than petrol. Nice channel and have subscribed. I'm a bit of VW enthusiast, own 2 seats and a T2 westfalia with a very special motor... the body is going through a full bare metal respray at the moment.

Great engine’s the old PD, I bought a 54 plate Fabia Vrs in 2015 as a work runabout, my main car at the time was a 6month old golf R, I took the Skoda a test drive and was shocked how quick it was, obviously not as quick as the golf but the initial kick when you planted your foot was addictive, I had it for 3 years and it never missed a beat, all I done to it was change the oil and put front tyres on it. Fantastic wee motor

Used to love my Bora 1.9tdi 130. Quite quick, economical and never had any problems apart from the boot lock which was replaced under warranty. It even survived having a bit of petrol put in it with no ill effects! Was much nicer than the mk5 golf i had after it.

I bought a 2001 MK4 TDI 130 golf estate on 90k. Ran it for about 5 years, sure window regulators, door lock module solder joints, suspension at 150k, duel mass at 180k. Sold it with 220k on the clock, and all with a tuning box fitted and lots of heavy towing. Last saw it MOT with 280k on the clock. It was age/value that killed it not reliability. Really miss that thing!

Had and enjoyed a few TDIs over the years: a 2.0 TDI Mk1 Touran Sport, a 1.9 TDI Mk5 Golf Match, a 2.0 TDI Mk6 Golf BMT Match, a 2.0 TDI Mk2 Sharan SE, a 1.6 TDI Mk3 Octavia SE Business and a 2.0 TDI Mk1 Golf SV GT. Finally changed back to a [VW] petrol last year.

I have an 04 PD jetta. 154 000 KM. Didn't need a car at the time, but.. black on black, leather interior, mint no rust, long beech wheels, oil catch can, egr deleted, Bilstein coil overs, 3" custom stainless cat back exhaust, Malone stage 2 tune, 150 hp 275 ft torque, not too fast ( like my 09 2.5 rabbit) but I just LOVE this car. I'll never sell it

My current 2011 Passat CR170 has 198k and still on original clutch, DMF, turbo, injectors, injector pump, EGR & DPF. The newer CR engines are equally excellent, mine uses no oil/coolant. Must say though, I went out in a MK4 Anniversary Golf PD150 that had been mapped - the way that donkey punched up hills in the lower gears was hilarious. The mid range hit was bigger than any of my 80’s turbo petrol hatches.

If I didn’t have my 2019 Golf 1.4T (petrol) I would be driving a Mk6 TDI, if not that I would absolutely be driving a Mk4 TDI but they’re very hard to find in manual and good condition in the US. It was always a rare car here.

Had a Mk3 tdi estate for years, did 240k, same clutch, same turbo, only issue was rust which unfotunately meant game over. Another great vid Andrew!

I'm the original owner and only driver of a 2004 VW GTI 2.8L 24V VR6. Engine code BDF. This is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, code O2M. This engine continues to perform flawlessly. The biggest issues have been a leaking radiator within the first 2 years of ownership. This was replaced under warranty. Also, an ignition coil failed. The was my fault for waiting too long to replace the coils. A vacuum line also leaked once. Finally, there is an oil leak that I need to identify the source of and fix. I believe it may be coming from the secondary air system. Aside from these minor problems, the core engine has been reliable. I only use 91 octane fuel and only use Castrol 5W-40 synthetic oil.

Great video Andrew. After purchasing a mk3 gti from you some years ago now and as an avid follower of volkswized I love stuff like this. Having worked for vw for ten years and working on the mk4 tdi from 2002 I am in total agreement with you. I currently own a mk4 gti pd 150 which is totally standard and the car as a whole and more over the engine astonish me. The torque even in 6th gear up hill never fails to impress. A truely amazing car . However I now have the tricky predicament after seeing your mk5 gti review of weather to change. After owning several mk2 gti's and currently a corrado vr6 I have never had a mk5 despite working on them over the years. I would be interested on your thoughts Andrew and if possible your opinion on values of my mk4 . 104k. fsh and extensive paperwork and maintenance. (including the camshaft and buckets replaced). Excellent rust free bodywork and superb interior. Keep up the good work with the brilliant and informative vidoes.👍 Kind regards matt

Nice little engine. I am a huge fan of VW. I am a huge fan of these engines! I owned a plethora of Pd tdi-s: One of them was identical to this one. Others included a Bora 96kw ASZ, Golf 4motion 110kw ARL, Octavia A5 77kw, Superb mk1 1.9Tdi 85kw, a b6 125kw Passat with the infamous BMR engine, to name the few... I owned a Fabia mk1 VRs ASZ. Currently I own a Seat Altea 2008 2.0Tdi BKD and a Lupo 3L converted to manual and remapped to 85hp (goes like a bullet and consumes like a cigarette lighter.) 3L is an LHD only, but there are a few enthusiasts driving them in GB as well. They are really epic cars. A place in a museum is reserved for them, for sure! Btw, It might be worth adding that 96kw ASZ, 110kw ARL and the jewel 118KW BPX engine fitted only in Ibiza Cupra are one and the same engine. ARL and BPX are identical. The map is only a little tweaked. ASZ is the same as well. The only difference is that the cars with ASZ engine have a side-mounted intercooler (SMIC), whereas the other two have a front-mounted intercooler (FMIC). The other difference is the turbo. ASZ has a 1749VA and ARL and BPX have a bigger 1749VB. The bigger turbo is a plug-and-play replacement... The rest is identical: engine internals, injectors, clutches, everything. So.. I had my vRS upgraded from ASZ to ARL easily and remapped to 180bhp. It ran like a dream! 180bhp is the uppermost limit for the stock clutch! Thank you for the nice videos, Andrew. Drove my friends PD 130 octavia the other day and was very impressed with how it pulled and I drive a Volvo V70 D5 (twin turbo one) as a daily. Enjoyed the longer ratios for 1st and 2nd. (my volvos 1st and 2nd gears are stupidly short for some reason). Are your injectors 're-conditioned'?

Audi A3 1.9 tdi pd with the 130 engine and the Audi a2 with a 1.4 tdi engine was the best cars I’ve ever had,amazing cars,that’s coming from someone with a golf mk7 gti

I bought my first Golf when I was 18 - a 6 month Mk4 Golf Match. After a year I traded it in for a 2.0 GTI (as I couldn’t insure a Turbo). I laughed when you said about people getting excited by a centre armrest back in the day - moving into the GTI this was definitely me haha!

Brilliant video, just love mk4 golfs. I've still got my mk4 golf gti after 17 years, bought it when I worked for vw dealership. Still going strong with 170,000 miles.

I have found the injector wiring looms fail in these for more than the unit injectors :) That's what I'd be looking to replace in the event of misfire/s and running badly. That one sounds great though.

My dad is currently driving a 9N3 Polo with the PD100 engine. No mechanical work on the drivetrain yet (only a new vacuum distribution box), and it just ticked over 200k. Revs almost like a petrol engine, and ridiculously efficient.

I had a 51 plate VW Golf SE black estate 130hp tdi from brand new. Replaced it in 2004 with 100k on the clock. Apart from routine services no problems. Only criticism was the suspension couldn’t keep up with the engine. For the time it was rapid.

Had the octavia mk2 hatch same engine great fuel economy and huge boot, only complaint in the skoda was the seat squab was too short.

Had two new mk4 golf,s , first was a 5 door tdi 110 bhp with the rotary injection pump ,that was a great car and had the same interior as your one. Traded that in a couple of years later for a 3dr pd 150bhp ! Absolutey loved that car! The power delivery was instantaneous and addictive , probably the one of my past cars that I miss the most, well that and my mk2 golf gti with abf conversion!

Had two Octavia's, one with the 1.9 110BHP ASV engine & my current one with the 2.0 140BHP BKD engine. Both are fantastic reliable engines. Mid-range shove always leaves a smile on my face.

More content like this please, have you got any other old VW's knocking round that your willing to breathe new life into on a budget. Great stuff. You should add this to your business selling a cheaper vw range from a reliable source along side your high end stuff

1.9TDI is really the best vw engine. I also like the 1.8T 20v if right oil is used and changed att right intervals it goes forever

Wow these were brilliant - we unfortunately didn’t get mk4 wagon here - we first got mk 6 wagon built in Mexico with cheaper 1.9 TDI and also dearer 2.0 TDI with 103 kw - these and now mk7 wagons are much sought after as long distance mile crunchers and hard to come across and most were DSG cars - hope we get to see some tinkering from you on this one ☝️

Had a polo with a 100 bhp 1.9 a golf with a 110bhp 1.9 and a audi with a 140 bhp 2.0. All had very high mileage when I got rid of them, and with regular servicing still pulled and ran like a Swiss watch, with super mpg the best range of Diesel engines ever

I bought an old 138bhp tdi pd back in December and I love it to bits, quick when u put your foot down and I still get 55-60mpg probably even more on long motorway trips cruises

Such a windy weekend. Had two PD's, a 3 pot Polo and a Bora with the 150. Never driven a 130, I hear that's the sweet spot in the range.

Looks a cracking little motor, well I would say that I love my Variant Sport (petrol though) I've had many MOTists comment how well preserved my car is! Well I do look after them if I can. Good capture Andrew! There's probably another 100k in her!

I had a 2002 VW Bora 130bhp PD TDI. Totally agree about the engine. It never failed me no matter how it was driven. Great honest video 👍👏👍

Had an 05 Fabia VRS with the 1.9pd in it, great little runabout!

I remember my dad had an 02 plate Audi A4 brand new 130bhp TDI. That thing went like a train and I used to love driving it. It felt very lively and powered up any hill. Sadly I think the diesels have died the more advanced they've got, with smaller engines, more filters and heavier frames. My mum had a 1.6tdi Golf mk 6 is quicker, more responsive, more lively in every single way compared to my current mk 7 1.6tdi blue motion Golf. My 1.6tdi mk 7 golf feels like a snail, unresponsive, not lively, that I've even thought about getting it remapped.

Evening Andrew I would've expected a car with that mileage the drivers seat to be threadbare especially the bolster but it's taken the mileage very well, doesn't look that old at all. Keep going your content is good, more interesting than some I've seen lately. Regards Simon.

I remember driving one of the first 115 Versions of this in a golf GT TDI.. was probably back in 2001 ... I was gobsmacked and instantly wanted (but couldn’t afford) one ... A few years later I got my hands on an Audi A4 with the 130 BHP version in & had that mapped to around 160 ... it felt so fast with all the torque ... I could leave ‘fast’ petrols behind with in the in gear acceleration it had ...

I love mine, Skoda Fabia mk2 pd105 with a pd130 turbo and injectors, pd150 headbolts, uprated organic clutch and 10kg smf and have a massive fmic for it, I've mapped it to 300lb/ft and 180bhp and it's bloody lovely, pulls well and get amazing mpg when cruising!

I currently have a 1.8t GTI at 237,000 miles (original engine) and my brother now has my old PD150 on around 230,000 miles now! Mind you, that's the second engine... cracked piston took out the last engine. Love this era of the golf. They're like lego

We have an Audi A3 with the PD engine. In the past I’ve had a mk3 golf estate with the old TD engine. And a Mk3 with a tuned TDI engine. All great. The non turbo 1.9 D was also good in my Seat (Caddy) Van

Interesting video as usual, I have a cr tdi 110 equipped vag product and I love it, but I agree entirely re the emission control garbage, how many cars will have an early demise and therefore environmental cost because an expensive and difficult to diagnose part has failed. However I’m on 130k and so far so good, but I do a lot of mway and don’t abide by the ridiculous 18k service interval. Only thing re the pd engines, I did have a Passat with the last bxe 1.9 105 bhp engine, and it was a droney old lump especially at mway speeds not sure if that was just that version of it but certainly it was reliable.

Are all these 1.9 tdi engines good or does it depend on the bhp? Like pd130 or pd150. Also what is the gearbox like for an automatic 1.9 engine?

Fab Review. i had the pleasure of 10years from new driving a 150hp Leon FR TDI Mk1 & that PD diesel was a dream. i replaced it with the Mk3 2lt 184hp TDI & yes its smoother & much quieter but has non of the turbo spooling up noises etc etc & feels a cheaper car but still very good & touching wood its 6yr old just past & been faultless. It wont do 700+ miles on a tank like the mk1 did tho ! Tank was bigger mind. I still dont get the point of switching back to a Petrol Equ & will run Diesels for as long as possible.

I agree, fantastic engines. Had a few in the past in Seats and VWs. However, everything else about this generation of VAG cars was terrible door locks, door and tailgate handles, window mechanisms, electric mirrors, switches and controls on the dash, sunroof, relays, broken pedal box..i could go on. Bodys were great though, never had rust issues.

We just scrapped a very similar silver mk4 golf estate, SDI engine but not certain which exact engine it was. Too much wrong with it to even consider sorting it. Was taking up space in our storage so scrapped it few months back. Got decent money at ASM to be fair. Great vid Andrew as per.

My A6 2003 pd130 has done 225k and has no smoke or weird noises,as long as you maintain it properly that engine is amazing

My Golf R also seems to be afflicted with a bonnet release catch that keeps falling off. Is there a simple fix for this as usually the catch ends up residing underneath the drivers seat.

Our never say die 2004 polo 1.4 tdi sport -has character in sound, economy and mid range surge - and clipping corner apex -- slowly!

Well, the bodywork is a lot better than my MKIV Golf Estate...! TDI PD130 - wonderful engine and incredibly easy to service. This is like looking into a mirror. Only difference is the climatronic and the engine map. I had the clutch done last February after spectacular DMF failure and the cambelt about three months ago. Not bad considering I've done 22K a year for the last four years in it. Got it at 48K and it's now on 138.

Most fabric power was 118 kw from 1,9 tdi pd. There were mounted in Seat Leon or VW Bora.

We owned a Silver 2002 Mk4 Golf Estate(100hp) TDI for 15 years. In all that time all it ever needed was normal service items like brakes and tyres and a couple of suspension springs. When we finally sold it the interior still looked as good as new, virtually no wear anywhere. Best car we've ever owned!

Got a 1.9 tdi pd driven 311k km. It has never given me problems outside of the camshaft position sensor which was a common and easily fixable problem by an amateur like me. Cost me 20 pounds to fix. Hands down the best engine vw ever made. Sadly i have to sell it since i needed more space.

I had a bora tdi 130 sport in 2003. I loved that car.

'As they say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! I'm the 2nd owner of a Golf Mk4 Estate TDI 90 bhp and for the past twelve years it has proven very reliable and refined. Aside of the usual regular servicing costs, it has taken me all over the UK & 'achieved' 300k! in the past I've driven, apparently, far superior cars/sports cars that I've never actually owned, yet the Golf that I do actually own - owes me nothing!

Couldn't agree more. Crazy that the 1.9TDI PD can effectively get you more mpg and better power delivery than a similar equivalent these days. Best engine ever produced for daily life, had loads of them. My Dad has a Final Edition A6 Avant 1.9TDI, and I'm in love with that over my newer E class diesel!

I’ve had 3 mk4’s. One also being an estate. Now own a 2015 a class and tempted to get rid to get another mk4. Love them!

PD was always a mighty engine. Great little workhorse for a couple of hundred quid. Great channel I hope you continue to make quality content and get many more subs 👍

I had a brand new (sept 2002) dark blue golf tdi pd 130 as an import. Got it £2000 cheaper than the dealer at £17,800. Turned out it was actually a ‘highline’ so had full leather, sunroof and was the most economical diesel I’ve ever had. Used to get nearly 600 miles from a tankful if I was frugal. Did 100k fault free miles, sold it for £6500 in 2007 and bought the golf gt with dsg etc. Great car but should’ve never sold the Pd. Worked out it had cost me £40 a week for five years. Now have a GTD estate, which is also awesome.

I’ve an Audi A4 52 reg 130 pd quattro that I use for work. It’s got over 200k on the clock now doesn’t use any oil and in the bad weather goes past everything. I’ve looked at newer cars to replace it with as I do between 20 and 30 k a year but just think there crap. When I do replace it I will be getting another pd.

I ran a B5 Passat Estate PD115 for 14 years, and the original turbo went at 223k miles still running the original clutch and gearbox! Amazing considering I had the engine tuned up.

I've got the Golf Mk.V TDI with only 80,000kms...just run in. This diesel engine never misses a beat....no point 'upgrading'.

I currently replaced my headlights with LED's and also replaced the fog lights next to it in the same housing, which are not going on now, so I replaced with old ones to check and they still didn't work and my headlights are now on constant high beam. I checked the regular fuses and they seem all good. So I'm not much of a car head, but I was wondering if you could tell what I'm doing wrong ? Thank you for your time

Brilliant engines, they also did a PD160 in the Seat Ibiza. I had an A4 PD115 and Fabia vRS PD130, both very reliable, efficient and surprisingly punchy. The PD115 would do up to 75 mpg on a steady run.

One of the last mk4's being an 05. I've got a newer common rail, but the PD is so much better engine, less problematic and go on and on. My dad had a 110 bora we sold it with 160k and years later its still taxed mot'd on 200k plus

I’ve found the 1.6 16v engine to be fantastic aswel. Had the golf for 11 years no problems at all.

Hi I have an 02 plate Audi A4 1.9tdi pd 130 bhp and have to admit the engine is just brilliant . Mine has done 236k with original engine, clutch etc and pulls like a train and has been reliable I service it twice a year myself because I do a few miles and it’s not too dear for service stuff either so thumbs up for the 1.9 tdi pd engine .. bulletproof 👍

Got a beat up VW bora with the ALH 90bhp 175k miles been the most reliable car I ever owned shocks brakes exhaust and front wings is all I had to do. Oil change every time service light comes on

I bought a Vento Tdi with 206k miles. The engine was smooth and didn't even dump smoke. Got it up to 252k before it failed its mots on rotten sills. I drove it to the scrap yard to be scrapped. I actually felt a bit sad and kept the spair key lol

Owned a 1.9 tdi pd Polo, 1.9 tdi pd Fabia, and 1.9 tdi pd vrs Fabia. The 2006 Fabia I still have as a good runabout in London, but it will have to be scrapped by Oct 2021 due to not meeting ultra low emission requirements. The PD 1.9 engine is absolutely bullet proof, pulls like a train, economical, and has got to be one of the best engineered and most reliable engines ever produced by the VW group. Very sad to see this engine resigned to the breakers yard.

I've got a Bora 130 on the drive with a bit of an oil leak, think I'll get it back on the road now!

The 1.9 was a very good engine, I have a non PD 110 in my 03 Leon. Been very reliable over the last 14 years. Rest of the car has the usual MK4 problems, replaced a door lock last month. They'll keep going, but unless you can work on them yourself, repair bills would put most owners off. Don't know what I'd replace it with, since as you said the newer diesels aren't that much better to drive, use more fuel & not as reliable. May have to go back to petrol.

Nice deal. A friend of mine got a fairly new Nissan pickup with a bad trans for $1. $150 for a rebuild kit and he drove it daily for at least 5 years.

Have a pd 150 reflex silver 3dr with Santa Monicas, leather and sunroof purchased in a hurry as a cheap runaboutbut still have it 5 years later. Sadly eventually gave in to the perennial chocolate camshaft issue despite my believe it wouldn't with regular correct spec oil but against my better judgement had it repaired and now does 55/60 mpg all day long. Steering rack also replaced and driveshafts and track rods. Due to lack of use and space sadly looking to pass it on soon but for 3 years didnt miss a beat. Now on 168k. Another fun PD fact i believe is that Seat bumped these units up to produce a stock 160hp variant for the Ibiza in the mid noughties 👍

Please don’t stop the channel! Love it! Had a Passat with an AWX for 100k which was amazing. Got a sharan with a BRT which I’m just waiting for it to explode its oil pump but still love VW

We have two 1.9TDI’s in the family. One’s from 1998 having 223k km and the other’s from 2000 and has +510k km. Both start flawlessy!
