"I Can Arrange For A Purple Heart." - The Pacific (2010) #shorts #thepacific #movie #scene #ww2
The Pacific is a 2010 American war drama miniseries produced by HBO, Playtone, and DreamWorks that premiered in the United States on March 14, 2010.
The series is a companion piece to the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers and focuses on the United States Marine Corps's actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations within the wider Pacific War. Whereas Band of Brothers followed the men of Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment through the European Theater, The Pacific centers on the experiences of three Marines (Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, and John Basilone) who were in different regiments (1st, 5th, and 7th, respectively) of the 1st Marine Division.

One morning at sunrise, the Marines are burying bodies and slowly walking back to camp, which is on the conquered airfield. Later the men are checking their weapons when another group of Seabees in clean dungarees and pith helmets arrives with fresh supplies. One of them approaches the group and asks if anyone has any Japanese souvenirs, weapons, anything, and says he'll pay good money for it. Sledge's pal Private Leyden invites the guy to check between his butt cheeks and take what he wants. The guy is persistent, saying he can't go home from war empty-handed. Snafu grins. "Ain't nobody going home." The man is quiet for a moment, then moves on to another group. Haldane approaches the men and greets them, taking off his pack and laying down his weapons. There's a big difference. One is a guy who hasn't been in combat, looking for a war trophy to take home that he come close to dying to get. The other is their commanding officer, who leads them in battle and from the from. He is everything an officer should be, he has earned their respect. In addition, he gives the respect back to them.

Agreed, my father in law was a Marine in late 30s. Served 4 years. Re-enlisted after Pearl Harbor in Navy as a Seabee. Trained as a "Hardhat" diver in San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate. Spent the entire war in South Pacific on all those different islands. Built docks and airfields. Came home and started a construction company in Marin County, California. Bought surplus govt. equipment and repainted it from OD green to yellow. He was still doing push-ups and sit-ups into his 80's.

It's worth saying, the Sea Bees, naval construction battalions, were usually the first to the beaches in WW2. They were the ones to clear shingle and build ramps for amphibious vehicles, and remove Czech hedgehogs, mines and dragon's teeth from the approach, (as well as diving under fire to demolish coral shoals, ensuring the landing craft didn't run aground) and they often did so without guns of their own. In Normandy, Sea Bee units suffered a 53% casualty rate, far higher than that of the Army. On Guam, they left welcome signs for the Marines on the beaches after having levelled Japanese fortifications. On Peleliu and Iwo Jima, they carried ammunition and supplies, evacuated casualties and plugged holes in the line without any heavy weaponry to support them. Despite not technically being combat units, the Sea Bees deserve the utmost respect.

The reason this did not do as well as band of brothers is simply because there were no heart warming moments. Even when they were winning they were still in a wet, flea/mosquito infested beach, eating maggots with their rice. Nothing glamorous there just pure wet hell. Nothing like a good European wine or a nice winter that kills all the bugs.
@IamAwhiteMEXICAN

Not only that, the main characters were kinda…..just not as interesting as the Band of Brothers cast. Lecky was an insubordinate asshole, Sledge and Snafu were just slowly losing it, and Basilone had some stupid romance subplot that hardly anyone cared for. Hamm was really the only character I personally liked, he didn’t take Snafu and Sledge’s bullshit.
@Nadamos

@IamAwhiteMEXICAN yeah I understand but is hard to have compelling characters when fighting the Japanese in Satan's wet asshole. I mean there is a scene in BoB where they take over a Bavarian town and drank nice Scotch inside a nice mansion. Even at the end of the war in the pacific they are in a war torn Japan. The setting of the story is too horrid to keep realistic to allow for good characters to exist. Unless your into it. Which some people are I suppose. But if you wanna make it realistic fuck good luck man.

Don’t forget that Band of Brothers had you bonding with many different soldiers and there was a good amount of time to do so. The Pacific had so many people rotating in and out that you never really bonded with anybody while watching. Add that to the absolute brutality that was the war in the pacific and this is what you get. That being said, I don’t think the 101st airborne liked winter time in Europe 😂

I think the sad part about the pacific is a good majority of the characters either die or wounded so bad they go home. It just shows how awful the pacific theater was and the actual book goes so much deeper is actually gut wrenching. If I remember a part of the book was when Eugene sledge and gunny were talking and sledge. A WW1 veteran said that this (the pacific theater and the Japanese) was bad. Meaning this was more hellish than WW1.
@Nadamos

@justinl2574 dude yeah...add the fact they were under supplied as they were marines and not army your stressed for them the whole time. Also fighting the Japanese is it's own monster. German Weirmach and even some SS decisions were not as brutal. The entire Japanese forces were doing exactly what they were told and that shit was insanity. I appreciate the book and show because it does not shy away from the reality. People expect the fun of easy company and are confronted with the reality of a wet fucked up war machine that eats and gargles all. No rest

For those of us who've served this means different. Yeah, some will die there but every single man will leave something behind, even those that return home. Honestly interesting that I haven’t really thought about until now that BOB was literally about brotherhood hence the name of the title but The Pacific took a different route that dealt with the individual stories of humans that were some what loners in a sense that they did have camaraderie but ultimately it was a battle of survival and not honor even though the Japanese always pride having a culture built upon it

BoB follows the POV of officers and senior enlisted, while The Pacific gives the perspective of privates and fresh NCOs. The other side of the island was equally hellish. Japanese soldiers were forbidden to surrender. As the battle neared defeat, those who could move made a charge to die, and for those who were seriously injured, doctors gave them hand grenades and forced them to commit suicide. Those who survived from the charge were ordered to charge again, and the process was repeated until all the survivors were killed. If a soldier is humiliated on the battlefield, his family back home is blamed. So they should not survive. War must never begin again...

My grandpa was in the Navy during WW2, a side gunner on a B29. Old Crows. I remember him telling me a story of a rope getting caught on their wing from the deck of a carrier and having to shoot the rope off cause it was at risk of hitting the props. He had the casings and a bit of rope from that. Haven't seen it since he passed.

The Pacific should have been Sledge's story rather than rotate with him Lecky and Basilone. Bisg mistake. Could have had more about Haldane and others. Thr rotation impaired the character development.

My great grandfather was a seabee on guadalcanal after the fighting was over and he came home with a bunch of japanese teeth he gave to his friends. He was probably just as big of a dork as this guy but that also means at least some of the marines werent too battle weary to make some money

My favorite part of this scene is Gunny quietly reciting the mantra along with the Captain. Gunny's probably been in the Corps longer than that saying has existed.

I like how it seemed like every soldier was in a different stage of coping with the pacific war. Snafu seemed to be the most far along from not caring anymore and doing whatever pulling dead enemies gold teeth out to a point where hes coped a bit and regained some of his sanity
