I found a Japanese Aria Pro ii LP style guitar from the 70s in a pawn shop for $100. It was so dirty and needed some TLC. Once I cleaned it, it became so beautiful and is now my favorite guitar that I own. So there are indeed gems that can be found in pawn shops.

I found a Epiphone LP Standard in a Japanese recycle shop, too. new strings, and it plays as good as my real Gibson "Les Paul Standard." And it is lighter. 10,000 yen with a real Gibson hard case. That was about $92 bucks. It was made at the Qingdao Plant (Epiphone), China on January, 2006...all the same, a fine instrument.

My Strat was a junk shop find. The original owner bought it and never played it was stuck at the back of a cupboard, in the box, for over 20 years. It still had tissue around it. I paid a couple of hundred bucks for it, about 30 years ago, and it's been gigged ever since. One of the greatest bargains of my life!

There's a special kinda feeling that comes to ya when you find a diamond in the ruff in a pawn shop. I search them regularly for guitars. The best I purchased for $100 bucks is a late 70's Fanning acoustic guitar. Based on a Martin, inlays like a LP and plays like a 70's Yamaha. Superb and growly sounding the way I like acoustics to play. Your accidental dream guitar is there at some pawn shop in the middle of nowhere. LoudLove

I once found a Gibson Maurader at a pawn shop. Its one of my go-to places for equipment shopping. Got a barley used Crybaby Wah oedal for like 10 bucks at a pawn shop once. The only thing "wrong" with it was some discoloring on the switch itself. Pretty good considering even used ones can be almost 90 bucks.

It’s not a particularly great guitar, but it’s one that I was in love with when I first started playing, but a friend at the time convinced me that “Yamaha doesn’t make good guitars…” anyway, it’s an RGX A2, and I snagged it for just $120.

When I was about 18 I started playing bass because my soon to be brother and father in law needed a bass player and said I should learn. Jon, my brother in law, loaned me his very crappy (lol) bass. I can’t even remember what it was. I loved playing, but soon became bored with bass and started to learn guitar. I LOVED guitars, I think, more than playing them. I soon started going to pawn shops and realized, after playing several, several, that I loved Les Paul guitars. I could have bought at least fifty in approximately a four year period, for anywhere from $200-350. My brother in law, Jon, who just turned 18, bought a new 1983 Les Paul Custom, hard shell case, and a Peavey amp, for about $800. The amp was a two twelve combo with chorus, I don’t remember the model, but it wasn’t a little practice amp. This was in the days pre GNR, then they ruined everything. As soon as they came along playing Les Pauls, everyone wanted one and you couldn’t touch one under $600-700. I finally was able to buy one in about ‘91, a beautiful ‘76 Standard in wine red. I loved that guitar and haven’t played a nicer Les Paul since. I paid $500 for it from a friend who owned a guitar shop. (I bought several guitars there including a ‘90 Takamine Jumbo acoustic with a cedar top. That I still own today.) Unfortunately, about a year after I bought the LP I had some financial trouble and had to sell that guitar. The worst guitar story of my life.
