I gotta say, I love how that even though Ian is gifted with magic and Barley isn’t, he isn’t ever jealous of his powers or tries to take them for himself. Instead he helps his brother with his fantasy knowledge and I think we need more supporting characters like that.

exactly!! right from the start he just felt pure joy for Ian, supporting and even coaching him. first sign of their relationship being slightly different from most siblings, due to the loss of their dad and Barley filling that space

The director mentioned in the commentary, how Ian act like a well-adjusted kid because he's got both parental figures in his life, even leaning on Barley in the family photo, and Barley acts more like a kid losing a parent would act, struggling I mean, with the car and the tickets and the "extended gap year"

The concept was great, and based in real life. The writer/director never met his dad. He passed while his mom was still pregnant with him. Only had his voice on a tape. Beautiful stuff. Onward was a great movie that got lost in the COVID pandemic. It came out, and then two weeks later the world shut down. And Disney just said "screw it" and put it on Disney+ instead -- but everyone was just watching the news and covering our fruit with hand sanitizer.

This film was definitely the victim of unfortunate circumstances, coming out literally a few weeks before COVID hit and caused everything to shut down, which led to it underperforming at the box office. I don't think it's one of Pixar's best films or anything, but I thought it was rather underrated when I finally got around to seeing it, with all the great comedy and heart that you'd expect from one of these films

This movie kind of changed my life when I saw it. My older sister really is Barley and I am definitely Ian, though we do have both parents. Our parents accidentally created a rivalry between us where she loved me, but she saw that I was treated as the golden child, and I saw her as a screw up. When this movie came out, I had completely cut my sister out of my life going on 6 months because I couldn’t stand how “dumb” she was. I went to this movie prepared to see a father/son movie, but when I saw us reflected back at me, I broke down sobbing. These days my sister and I have never been closer, and now we are working on trying to heal together in our 30’s/40’s. Our parents are shocked, but grateful for the change.

I also saw my relationship with my sister in Ian and Barley. Difference being, I'm Barley. 😅 The way you explained your experience and relationship with your sister reminded me heavily of my sister and how she views me. We're not estranged, or anything like that, but she definitely thinks very little of me - has ever since we were young. She always makes it clear that, if something is going wrong in my life, it's my fault and that she has no empathy for me. (For context: I struggle heavily with depression, anxiety, self-motivation and self-worth. I don't have much in the way of support from friends or family, so when I stumble I fall.) She's quick to point out my flaws if I present them in any way and she doesn't usually apologize for rude behavior. My parents (specifically my mother) have always treated her like the golden child and coddled her, and usually side with her whenever she and I get into an argument. My point is, I'm happy that you and your sister were able to make up and grow closer because of this movie. I wish my sister had come to a similar conclusion when we watched it, but alas... I'm pretty sure her only take-away was that she related to big, strong, outgoing Barley while small, quiet Ian was like her weak, older sister... 😓

There’s not a lot of really good modern depictions of that brotherly love type relationship. So often in literature brothers are pitted against each other and fathers take on the tyrannical stereotypes. In this story they show love and anger and bitterness and forgiveness and sacrifice all in pursuit of the love and pride of the father. Which the father freely gives but the brothers had to go through the experience in order to freely accept. It’s not a shock to me that John Krasinski, Chris Pratt, and Tom Holland were involved in telling a tale about the strength of good pure masculine love. The love of brothers, fathers, and sons.

Barley being the older/oldest sibling who has it the toughest but still has to hold it together for their younger sibling(s) really punches me in the guts. When Ian crossed the bottomless pit and the rope falls off of him, Barley is freaking out and terrified to the point of tears. He seems like the fun, goof-around older bro, which he IS, but underneath it all his top priority is Ian's safety and when that was in jeopardy without Ian's knowledge, Barley was horrified. And there was NOTHING he could've done if something went disastrously wrong. He had promised Ian the worst that could happen to him was that he fell, and the rope, and Barley, would catch him. Instead, the rope untied and Barley would not be able to save Ian if he fell. That's how it must feel to be in charge of a youngster about to take a huge step in their life, like their first day of school/high school, going off to college, or moving away. It's the guardian's job to give the young adult the confidence to take the first step, but the whole time the guardian is absolutely petrified for them. And there's often not gonna be a way for the guardian to protect the young person in their care when something inevitably fails/goes wrong. That's family growing up together.

My brother is 15 years younger than me. My mom had to work a lot and my dad wasn't too involved in raising him, so I was basically co-parenting him until school. We really bonded later in life and became pracitcally best friends despite the age difference. We watched this movie together when I was pregnant, and after seeing the mom in the movie he told me "this is the kind of mom you're gonna be" and it was the best compliment I've ever gotten in my life.

This was probably the Disney movie that made me cry the most, along with Up. Inside Out was pretty emotional too, but now that I'm older I can handle it. I think the people need to pay more attention to the GOOD Disney movies like Onward, because sometimes Disney's content is dumb or filled with some sort of political message that people aren't ready for. However, I like a lot of the "dumb" cartoons and sitcoms from Disney Channel and Disney Junior/Playhouse. Jungle Junction, Fish Hooks, and Kiff need more love too!

This movie is very special for me. My second youngest sibling, his father, isn't really around. He moved down south for his job, and my brother hasn't seen him since. I do all the dad stuff with him as a result, so he doesn't miss out. We've all had issues in my family with our father figures, and I don't want him to have it as bad. At the end of the day, though, I am his lame, dorky older brother. Thankfully, he's still young enough that I'm not too lame to hang out with, lol. I've always found the implications of a humanoid dating a centaur to be rather alarming. Her organs would be pulped 🤢

You earned your thumbs up by the end of your intro!😀 TTRPGs can be a bit of an obsession. Robin Williams once said that D&D was harder to quit than cocaine. If you want to feed the obsession while doing your job, you could try reacting to an actual-play D&D game. Critical Role is an obvious choice, but there's just SO MUCH of it, so I'd suggest some one-shots or limited series. From CR's world of Tal'dorei, Exandria Unlimited: Calamity is AMAZING, and takes place in the setting's distant past, so no spoilers. I'd also REALLY recommend Dimension 20 (the first season is a setting a lot like Onward).
