Yeah, it sucks how people treat homeless people as if they're not human. When my dad was hiking once, he met a homeless man named Randy in the forest. When I was growing up Randy was a better Uncle than any of my 13 uncles. Dad and I would go visit him often, and he'd keep in touch through a convenience store with employees who cared about him. When dad eventually died of cancer, I left a note with the employees, then drove back to the coast. Randy called me and I had to break the news. Hearing him cry was so painful, especially since he never showed pain or weakness. Those rich jerks are the ones who aren't human, if you ask me.

Yeah, there's a few groups that always kill off any attempt to create public toilets. They bring up people possibly doing drugs, setting up camp, and prostitution as reasons to vote against it. So instead, there are literally camping tents rigged together in encampments for as long as it takes for them to be shoo'd off somewhere else. Marin votes down any and all transit expansion projects to that county because it will "bring in the homeless." And maybe.... 30-40 years ago there was that dumbass in office who "fixed" the homeless problem in the city by gathering them up on buses and dropping them off in Oakland. Honestly, it's a hella expensive place to live. People who don't pull in high figures lose homes and businesses trying to keep up with rent until they have nothing left. The higher the inflation rates, the worse that map will be in any given year. It would probably crash your system if you looked it up during the lockdowns.

Never see this when I visit relatives (yearly), but we're not hanging out in the tenderloin/Haight/south of market. The number of homeless people in those areas has completely exploded though, and I know that SF has anti-homeless policies that limit number and access of public bathrooms, plus everyone's being priced out by developers and demand. So I'd partly dispute, there are real awful neighborhoods but the perspective on the city is overblown and there are some clear policies to change.

I lived in SF for years, so do family and friends of mine. None of us have seen this shit problem. The real problem is the lack of services for the homelessness, which is making their numbers grow to a point where the city refuses to spend any money on them. Republicans have destroyed this city trying to take power here, and the dems are so corrupt that they can't even go through with the most basic and decent policies. The city government needs to be cleaned out and replaced with experienced professionals that are willing to spend money on things that don't generate money, or the city will drown in poverty and class war.

It's like making abortion illegal; people will still do it, theyll just have to use unsafe methods that puts them at risk. It doesnt affect the homeless solely either, subway stations will remove benches to keep them from sleeping on them so the elderly, pregnant women, etc cant rest their feet. If they wanted to reduce these things, they need to invest in shelters that dont have such strict rules that they exclude most homeless (must be sober, cant have pets, etc) and not be run by people who get off on the power trip they get from threatening to kick people out of the shelter for minor infractions such as "having an attitude".

When people do fall on hard times, they get back up fairly quickly. The vast majority of homeless are not those sweet poor angels down on their luck like we're always told. Talk to someone who runs a soup kitchen like I did, and it'll really open your eyes to things. Hell, the mayor of Aurora Colorado went undercover as a homeless person for a week to see how he could best understand the needs of them, and what he found is in line with what I've said unfortunately. It's genuinely heartwarming to see people show so much sympathy in times as shitty as we live in, but the depressing truth is we're being taken advantage of.
