I actually usually recommend Carter Hall. It’s available everywhere, and it is very forgiving when it comes to over or under puffing. I also think it’s a great mild blend for people new to the hobby.

I agree. Chatham Manor is a good one also and similar.

I remember back when i was a new pipe smoker, English blends were the easiest to get right. Especially in a ribbon cut.

Great video. This is something that I've been struggling with as a new smoker. Thank you!

Thanks for touching on these topics. It’s always interesting to see how other pipe smokers handle the hobby. Good stuff.

Pretty good tips. Thank you. Have a great weekend!

Another related topic you might demo is relights. Coming from cigars, it took me a long time to get the hang of not relighting aggressively, but gently to avoid scorching the remaining tobacco. Nice series.

Hey, Wilson! I've been looking forward to this video for some time now, so I'll be sure to test these techniques out. It seems to me that pipe smoking is about finding that balance that works best for you: not packing too loosely or tightly, making sure your tobacco isn't too moist or too dry, etc... It's hard to figure these things out without being shown (at least it cuts down on the experimentation time that often leads to a less than satisfactory smoking experience), so thanks a bunch for taking the time to share your thoughts. Take care! Bryce

Glad it could be of help! And that's right, there's definitely a balance.

Thanks for the vid, very informative. However, I do have a question. I’ve been doing all these things and pipes still go out. The flavour is superb, I managed to inhale very slightly and pipes don’t get hot usually. If I inhale more often, they still go out and I relight like 6 or 7 times a smoke. I have a suspicion it’s a little too much. Maybe it’s the lighting? I use a bic lighter and perform the charing light in the beginning.

Helpful stuff for noobs like me thank you, cigars are now completely unaffordable in the UK :( Just as an aside, I wonder why the traditional pipe has lasted so long when it seems to be a battle to use as one intends and keep the thing alight. Perhaps one masters it over a few years.

Regarding microwave tip, what wattage is your microwave. It can effect time. If yours is, for example 1200 watts, someone with a 1000 watt microwave might only need 8 seconds. Thanks for the tips. I smoked pipes over 35 years ago, when inheriting some my father used. Eventually I quite. However, my older sons like to smoke cigars at our occasional family gatherings, which I decline. One son bought me a pipe, like those I had with my father, to give me a comfortable alternative. I'm relearning techniques, but probably won't smoke a pipe more than 1-2 times a month.

I pack with the handshake method. How you shake a baby’s hand, then a woman’s hand, then a mans hand... same thing. Different words Soli deo Gloria

Hi Wilson, have you ever had Rattray's Wallace Flake? It's supposed to be the same as Peterson University Flake. I've not had University Flake, but I've been smoking Wallace Flake, and I have been enjoying it.
@TheSpurgeonPiper3 жыл бұрын
I actually haven't but I've been told it is essentially the same recipe of UF. At some point I'll pick some up to compare.

I've been watching a butt ton of ytpc vids. Mostly your channel and mutton chops. Well tonight was my fist bowl. I was being cautious with how much I drew in, how often and how hard. I was expecting a few things. • I knew the nature of burning something would inherently have a smoke flavor. • Frequent lighting. And in a way I tried to make sure I was letting my pipe die just to be cautious. • I picked tobaccos with good room notes. That way if I messed up smoking and it ended up tasting bad, it would at least smell good. It went well. I had toung bit early on but got a good slow rhythm going that stopped it. Relighting and tamping trying to do the breath method. It was going well enough. But I was getting a cigarette flavor and smell. I was expecting a smell like I smelled from other pipes I've been around. I wrote it off as bad lighting and tamping technique. Would love some advise.
@TheSpurgeonPiper3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tweek, looks like you are checking on the right things. From what I can tell, your issue might be smoking too hot. Continue to practice your breaking rhythm and make sure your bowl doesn't get too hot. If it's overheats, you can lose the flavor and taste/smell simply smoke. Keep at it. It will take time and patience.

Alright thanks so much.

So I figured out it's my lighting and packing. I got lucky once and half the bowl was fantastic. It smelled great and tasted great. There's something, some tiny detail or technique I must be missing to get a good light going.

@@TommyRushing I am having the same problem. My tobacco just smells and tastes like a cigarette. I try to smoke slow but then my pipe goes out. We'll figure it out!

I have heard some people say don't use a filter as it takes away too much from the flavor of the tobacco. What is your recommendation, filter or no filter?
@TheSpurgeonPiper3 жыл бұрын
Short answer: It comes down to preference and if you are a "wet" smoker. If you get a lot of gurgle everytime you smoke, then using a filter would probably be a good idea.

Love the microwave tip! Which Peterson Pipe do you have? I am going to order one, they look like great Pipes, did you order direct from their website?

I have quite a few Peterson pipes. Most of them I purchased from Smokingpipes.com and a couple are estate pipes.
