The problem is that sometimes an emotional reaction isn't always the best one. For example myself laughing like a lunatic at Joker's 'magic trick' in The Dark Knight. Died before his time and by all accounts he was a gentle giant in real life as well. Also bad ass because he was a bodyguard and bouncer before he became an actor. At one point you uttered "Why am I watching this?" That is an easy answer. Rare is something truly beautiful that comes in and touches our hearts with pain both sweet and wondrous and tragic, heart breaking...making us suddenly come a live with feeling and emotion. The price we pay is worth it for something that fills us with such love and compassion...even for someone that does not exist. This is a movie that can only be called a "masterpiece". A person can only become a better person by watching it and being touched by it. If you are not touched by the Green Mile you either dead inside or lying to yourself.

Empathy, or even sympathy, displayed during a movie in the form of laughter or tears only deepens the beauty of the person watching. We learn the character of a person by their ability to express emotion (or lack thereof). Crying is a natural response to sadness and this movie is well written and well acted, so it's easy to feel sadness while watching. Feel however you feel, but try not to feel embarrassed or ugly because you show emotion. You're showing us that you're a loving, caring, human being and that's a beautiful thing.

We all cry through this movie...I still watch it from time to time, it's just such an excellent film. I've actually seen some comments on other reactions say they don't understand the crying, makes me wonder if those people have no compassion. How does someone not get sucked into these characters? I appreciate your reaction, helps me believe there is still love and caring in this messed up world 🥰

No one in their right mind can any longer deny that Steven King grew into a Master Story-Teller. When he was young, the literary world looked down their noses at him, and called him a 'Hack'. King, himself, does admit that some of his earlier writing was pretty amateurish. That being said, The Shawshank Redemption (from his novella 'Rita Hayworth or Shawshank redemption') and The Green Mile are both superb stories. Only someone with a brilliant mind can produce such a story. And all of us are the beneficiaries !

During a discussion with some movie enthusiasts, I was recently introduced to the theory that John Coffey = J.C. = Jesus Christ. Christ absorbed the sins of the world and died on the cross for it, next to two criminals. One was repentant for his misdeeds and the other was not. Never thought of it that way, it gave me great insight and it gives even more depth to the subtext found in Steven King literature
