The Dutch are incredible engineers, I cannot believe these bridges exist in real life! Our world tour of bridges takes us to the Netherlands this time and if you don't want spoilers, please don't read this until the end of the video!
First up we have the absolutely crazy Slauerhoff Bridge, which cannot really be done in 2D but I gave it my best shot. Then we recreate Amsterdam's Python Bridge which has to be one of the most crazy looking bridges I've ever seen. Before recreating the Eiland Bridge in Poly Bridge 2, the king of variety this one, with a cable stayed section, a normal span and a draw bridge! Really enjoyed my trip to the Netherlands, although it did bring back memories of Sam the dog... Poor lil guy...
As always, if you enjoy the video please give it a LIKE and subscribe to the Real Civil Engineer channel and enable notifications so you can be the first to know when I post future videos! Thanks!!

As someone from the Netherlands I'm kind of surprised that we have all these cool bridges. Really only classic counterweight draw bridges come to mind when I think about "dutch bridges". So thanks for showcasing these, they're lovely. Also the third is my favourite even if it isn't as stylish, the combination is fun and it's kind of a reordered version of the Erasmus bridge.

I lived in Den Haag for a couple of years and have been visiting it for nigh on 20 and compared to other countries the Dutch do let their engineers express themselves. Planners approve interesting structures (check out the old MinBuza building for example) rather than cheapest ideas. And they aren’t afraid to knock stuff down and do it over.

Bridges mentioned/shown, with some extra info for those that are interested: Slauerhoffbrug (English: Slauerhoff Bridge) is a fully automatic bascule bridge (aka tail bridge) in the city of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. It is a road bridge that carries the Slauerhoffweg (named after J. Slauerhoff) over the Harlingervaart. It was completed in 2000. Python bridge, a pedestrian bridge connecting Sporenburg and Borneo Island in Eastern Docklands, Amsterdam, built 2001 by West 8. Eilandbrug (Overijssel) is an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge in the A50 motorway (Rijksweg N50) connecting Kampen and Ramspol. Sailboats with height lower than 14 meters tall can sail under the bridge without it having to open. The bridge is mainly used by the "Bruine vloot", a professional charter sailing fleet with traditional dutch sailing ships. Official use started from 21 january of 2003, and recieved the "Betonprijs" award in the same year. Info is mostly from wikipedia and freely translated. Also, G E K O L O N I S E E R D

Can't say I ever expected a bridge from my hometown to make it into this. First bridge (Slauerhoffbrug) is very close to where I live and somewhat on the way to my grandparents so I've gone across it multiple times. I guess if you've used the same bridge for 20 years you start taking the impressive engineering for granted.

I remember having a bridge-building contest already in the first year of highschool. it was in "techniek", so tech-class I guess, and the teachers would get on them to test their strength. It might be interesting to note that the bridges would be built out of paper, those tiny bamboo sticks, glue and rope, that's all. It's truly in our Dutch blood I guess Ohja and ofcourse the obligatory GEKOLONISEERD

Pro tip: you know how you’re always complaining that wood and steel aren’t 3D and sometimes there’s a part at the top of the bridge that goes directly above the bridge, and the wood and steel doesn’t do that, just use roads, which then go above the bridge and looks more 3D and realistic Edit: for example on the first bridge where there’s the big ball on the left, if you made the wood roads then it would look 3d

Nope. "Holland" actually is an entire area, spanning from the North Sea to somewhere around Oberhausen, Germany. In early writings the area was named as "Dutsch Land". Where "Dutsch" stands for "hollow/hole/dip" Our little Kingdom was formed by joining 11 provinces together. All below sealevel. Hence "the Netherlands". Plural. Because even back than, we'd love to point out our "supremacy" over the Germans. And "Dutsch" became "Dutch" , and the Germans got their names. It also explains why we, the Dutch, refer to Germans as "Duitsers" and Germany as "Duitsland".

My 2ct Till 1840 North- and South-Holland formed one province. In good Dutch tradition, this was too much power in one place (The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Gouda, Haarlem) so it got split in two. England and Holland have more history together than all the other provinces combined. So, with my special permission, Englanders may call The Netherlands, Holland. 😁

@@RealCivilEngineerGaming I don't know what it's like in the UK, but here in Belgium, you can either follow "Civil Engineer" and after 3 years of Bachelor, specialize in a variety of specializations, or you can study "Civil Engineering: Architect" which differs from the "Construction" specialization of "normal" Civil Engineer in that they also follow creativity and artist courses from the first year (such as building models out of cardboard and all). But I can confirm that for everything else, they follow the same classes as regular Civil Engineer students (and Math Bachelors for Calculus and Linear Algebra). They just don't get classes that aren't directly applicable to construction and architecture, such as Electromagnetics, etc.

In my country, we have cultural movie for children to show (Letland). On of scenes is exactly about traumatic experience of child being robbed of his trusty dog he loved so much. It is meant to teach of uncontrollable losses in young children (like we cared...) But truth to be told - it did stick in mind forever. Glad to see there's more people having such experiences to share.

New ideas for materials... - Aerogel: This material is extremely lightweight, but also very brittle. Aerogel has an incredibly high buoyancy, meaning that it can float on water and thus support the weight of other materials. - Magnets: Exactly what they say on the tin. - Buoys and Weights: Instead of having to construct your own counterweights and buoys using Reinforced Road and Aerogel respectively, standalone Weights and Buoys would also be available.

It takes just the Dutch make a bicycle and pedestrian bridge because they decided to build a recreational, habitual and nature area on the other side of a major highway and a canal. Meet the Blue Walker aka the Pieter Smit bridge with a total length of 800 meters. This includes a draw bridge over the canal. In fact part of it goes over the lake which is in the aforementioned area. Pieter Smit was the first mayor of the county of Oldambt where this bridge is about to be opened. The bridge is named after him after he tragically died of heart failure, while this bridge was in development. The namechange was by almost unanimous request of the people of Oldambt.

Your first attempt to pronounce Slauerhoffbrug was excellent. I live right next to the Pythonbrug. It's part of a pair: the Pythonbrug is actually called the Hoge Brug (high bridge), and the other is the Lage Brug, though my family calls it the Rode (red) Brug. They look cool, but it's still amazing to see one of them singled out as one of the three coolest bridges in the country. Nice other engineering detail: there's a tunnel going lengthwise underneath the water that runs under this bridge, in order to create a shortcut to the A10 ring around Amsterdam. The whole area is part of the old eastern docklands, now all residential. Another nice detail for engineers: one of the peninsulas connected by the Python bridge is called Sporenburg, because it was entirely filled with railroad tracks (sporen) back in the 1930s.
