We head to the land down under this time as we recreate more real bridges in Poly Bridge 2. Unfortunately this was a bit too realistic as I get attacked by a giant spider mid recording... If you don't want any spoilers for which bridges feature in this video, please don't read the below until you have watched the whole thing!
So I tried to recreate the Anzac Bridge in Sydney using custom shapes and failed massively... Then I recreated the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge in Poly Bridge 2, before providing you all with an educational engineering lesson in trusses! I recreate the Burdekin Bridge in Homehill, Australia and use a different type of truss for each span to find out which truss is the best. Is it the Pratt truss, the Warren truss or maybe even the Double Warren? Find out in this video!
As always, if you enjoy the video please give it a LIKE and subscribe to the Real Civil Engineer channel and enable notifications so you can be the first to know when I post future videos! Thanks!!

Pratt bridges are often preferred because the longer diagonals are in tension instead of compression. If you orient them in the other direction (Howe), they'll be in compression and may have to be increased in size to avoid Euler buckling failure due to their long length (tension members don't have an equivalent failure mode dependent on length).

Speaking of the Harbor Bridge, when me and some classmates went on a trip to New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji a few years back, a few of us climbed to the top of the bridge. I was not one of those who did, I'm deathly afraid of heights, so therefore I went to the Opera House. Just an interesting little fact.

Stoked to see the Burdekin bridge in this video. Some fun facts regarding this bridge pulled from local knowledge - the support pillars have no solid foundations and sort of float in the sand. You can feel the bridge move about when stopped in the middle of it (usually for bridge work). Grew up being told it was the longest single span bridge in the southern hemisphere, but can't find any references to actually confirm this.

Why did it say Sorry New Zealand and not Australia. 3 Cruise ships can’t go under the harbour bridge irl either. Edit: I’m scared shitless of spiders. So you should come to Australia. The worst thing about it is the heat (if you come in summer) and the flies (also in summer).

I don't know if you still read comments on a video this old, but the first bridge over the Mississippi river deserves some love. There had been many attempts to bridge the river, but all had failed. Andrew Carnegie had a fledgling steel company, he decided to prove that he could produce steel in sufficient quantity that it could be used as a building material. Thus he built the first steel bridge and at the time the longest bridge (or at least the longest unsupported bridge?) up to that date. Then to prove it was stable he held a parade to cross it lead by an elephant because there was a superstition that elephants would not step on an unstable structure. Edit: After looking it up, it is the Eads bridge in St. Louis. And it was the "longest rigid span" of bridge. And it has a weirdly fascinating story that was fun to read.

A sneaky little fact about the ANZAC Bridge: there are two bronze statues at the end of the bridge, one for a NZ soldier and across the road an Australian soldier. The artist that made the statutes was from NZ so he made the NZ soldier a few inches higher. Not sure how he got caught but he did and was made to do the Australian solider again at the same height.

The last bridge, the Burdekin is pretty common in Australia I have seen a few in various parts of Australia and sizes. Especially in the Northern parts. My theory is they handle flood waters well (tropics and all) and they can handle cyclones. I grew up in the NT of Australia and spent alot of tine going to very remote places. They also seem to be used as railway bridges a fair bit, I have a vague memory Katherine NT used to have one, and think I had to use it when the newer bridge flooded....again

fun fact: the pillars on the Sydney Harbour Bridge aren't even connected to the bridge itself, they're only there because the citizens of Sydney thought it wouldn't hold without the pillars when, in reality, the pillars being connected would actually decrease the bridge's strength.

a bridge for you to build is the Old Murray bridge. i think you may find it quite interesting and perhaps a bit challenging. when/if you search you may need to type bridge twice as the town it services is also called murray bridge

You should build the Brent Spence Bridge in Cincinnati Ohio. Make sure to have tankers crash on the lower deck... (Too soon?) But really, you could do the Roebling Bridge just upstream in Cinci. It's quite the BILF itself. Though it's very similar in style to the Brooklyn Bridge, it does pre-date it.

Finland: - Koria Railway Bridge from 1870, no great photos, but an awesome iron truss bridge And two current highway bridges: - Tähtiniemi bridge cable-stayed harpform bridge - Vihantasalmen silta a largely wooden five-span king-post truss bridge from 1999 I would really like to nominate the 1975 Myllysilta from Turku, but I'm pretty sure that is neigh impossible to construct in PB.

I've been over the harbour bridge many a time and have seen it from the Opera house plenty of times but I never notice that the arch doesn't stop at the columns....wowsers.

You're too adorable. *best aussie ascent I've heard someone do (everyone always tries to imitate paul hogan and it's annoying). *nice to hear a lad trap and release rather then kill. *a lad who doesn't abide toxic gender roles is a lad with a very happy misses, god bless your sweet heart. *if you want to visit Australia but avoid the whole spiders everywhere thing just don't go to the Northern territory. Tasmania is the best spot it's a Island state and has none of the mainlands creepy crawlys (and also the hobart bridge is a bit of a BILF with a interesting backstory) Anyway bless your sweet heart and give ya brave misses my love, she's a peach.
