While I do not understand exactly why we won't get the short wheel base in the US (it would likely sell well), I do understand the reasons for the LWB version from my own perspective: third-row seating. Please correct me if I am wrong, but the SWB doesn't have the third-row seats as an option. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I want a third row for being able to install 3 car seats. 3 car seats across a single row is typically physically tight, and ergonomically horrible for the parent helping to strap their young children into the car. My back has been crying for the past four years loading my boys into my Passat, GTI, and to a lesser degree, the Bolt now. I only have two kids right now, but this vehicle is my choice if and when we have a third. The SWB would be a non-starter for me.

You commented several times asking "why would someone want a bigger version?" I am really excited about the 7 passenger version because I have a family of 6 and there are no EVs on the market that realistically seat a family of my size. This is the first EV I have seen which I am actually considering, but only in the long wheelbase version.

A crazy comment at 3:20. We're basically teetering on a global recession with cost of living increases never before seen. This winter, some people will be chosing between 'heat or eat', so the comment is thoughtless and unnecessary. EV's are undoubtedly the future in one shape or form, but manufacturers seem to be showboating right now, almost like they want to show what they can do, but not actually make EV's for the masses at prices the average person can afford, and the average person *cannot* afford $70k and up on a car!

@@hereigoagain5050 ha! I wish I had. But “starving artist” isn’t just a cliche, you know. My one bedroom apartment on Haight Street was $150/month! I got my BFA in 1978. I had a tradesman skill (running a printing press) I learned in high school. That paid the rent. Then I went back to school and got a teaching credential (needed the Bachelor’s degree to get that) in 1990, as I wanted to do something meaningful. I taught elementary school for 30 years. Plus I was an adjunct professor at the local community college (photography) and lecturer at the state university (photography). All of that was a great experience. A few exhibitions, work in collections, a book, and years of immense satisfaction and challenges creating work. So, I’d say art school and the BFA proved very useful!

When the concept vehicle was unveiled it caught my attention. I think the changes to the appearance actually hurt it. Volkswagen should've made it look MORE like the classic VW micro-bus. That VW multi-van you pointed out is definitely something I will have to look into as I prefer PHEVs. Charging isn't readily available for me. I prefer the essentially unlimited range when you still have a gasoline motor to get you around after the electrons run out and there isn't a public charging station anywhere near.

Own a Id4. Love the look of the buzz. Won't buy another VW because they don't update their software. Over a course of a year I've had many software issue, none that have left stuck on the side of the road but super frustrating. I still have to swipe to charge at a Electrify America station. Don't get me started on the VW phone app, I can't even use it to lock or unlock the car or see if its locked or unlocked. Their route planning navigation is terrible. The backup camera is blurry. Was locked out of the phone app for the last 10 days then miraculously it just starts working again. So if you think Volkswagen will update their software don't hold your breath. You would think with all the new electric car competition out on the market that they would be on top of these things.

A couple of comments, not everyone can afford a $90-$100K vehicle, so that is bad advice to VW to price it that way. I hope the EV auto manufacturers make electric cars cheap enough for the masses, lower price is always better. Also, the current situation with chip shortage(s) is not the big issue anymore, I see thermoplastic supplies being limited (injection molded components) and other commodities that suppliers are having problems obtaining as well as getting employees is a bigger problem. I also think VW should market both wheel bases here in the states. Great review, keep up the good work!

This has an unlimited market base. Eighteen to death would buy this if they can afford it. I VW can make a base version for 50k they will sale a million of them. They have to be well built. Start them out at 70k and work out the bugs and get the price down over time.

I can see initial sales of this being strong with people that have an emotional connection to the VW Bus, but honestly the interior seems very low rent, at least in this review, especially in that price range. I don't see this being a good seller once the enthusiasts have theirs. Minivans need family useful innovations, not just big cubic feet.

Yeah, it is a disappointment design-wise... VW has been working on this before it was an EV and this is what they decide to produce? Maybe a company like Apple could buy them that has more knowledge about design and software that needs manufacturing car knowledge... might be a good marriage. Except you have German regulations etc... aka Giga Berlin, I not sure anyone will build another plant or start a company in Germany.

@@rockstertx interesting perspective. Germany is still the industrial powerhouse of Europe, despite high standards of environmental protection (regulations) and workers rights. And American car companies are not famous in Europe for good design, Tesla being an exception.

There's tremendous pent-up demand for a VW Bus and no similar EV options so they'll sell a lot, if they don't price it too high and avoid battery or other issues.

You need the long wheel base for frequent 6+ passenger comfort PLUS cargo for larger families and sports where parents car pool kids ( Big reason to get a VAN. over a crossover SUV)... Second is they already announced the camper version is coming that one needs room for the pop up bed, kitchen and cargo.

No, no and no to the "just make it a 100K and people will buy it" not only is that super elitist, and dismissive, of anyone who's isn't a well off KZfaqr, or trust fund baby who wants to add yet another vehicle to their collection, it's not factual. look at the vehicles that sell the most. Whoever gets an affordable EV to the people,. is going to be the most successful. I have been a VW fan since a kid, and was excited about this, but I'm going with a Fisker Ocean, better price, better specs, more sustainable production, better use of materials. Hard to even enjoy the video or vehicle, after "Just charge 100K"... that effectively makes it WORTHLESS to most.

This should be a top-seller in USA and Canada. It's Achilles heel is the tech. If the hardware is decent, then VW should be able to push software updates later. The interior looks much better than early pre-prodution ones. Thanks Kyle!

Great video because of the excitement! I do wish someone would fold the back seats down with the add-on accessory platform in a video - I think it allows for a long enough flat surface to have a "bed" in there. For me, I don't need all the bells and whistles of a camper to go camping and I know this isn't a camper, but if it's possible to sleep in there and easily buy a platform/shelf (and not have to custom make your own), then that would make it totally worthwhile for me (was originally hoping for the rails, captain's chair swivelling, and table shown in the original concept vehicle). Because it's electric, I wouldn't spend more in gas/create more emissions while doing my city driving in a bigger-sized vehicle. It will be so unique in Canada - not many electric vans.

The big draw of the original was the camper style interior. But we are living in different times,, most cities have outlawed sleeping in vehicles so you would get arrested camping out in this thing.

Kyle, I really enjoy your channel however your remark about making EV's expensive because "people will buy them" is a bit tone deaf. Given that you've recently purchased a Tesla Plaid and a Rivian truck clearly puts you in a more advantaged position than a whole lot of other Americans. Said, another way, you're basically telling a significant portion of your audience they're SOL if they don't have the bucks.

Please don’t promote pricing this as a 60k+ Ev! Finally have a family van option with this but average us family makes 54-64k. The original VW bus new back in the 70s and 80s would be under 20k with inflation today. 40-50k is still a ton of money for a car to most people. If they can sub 60k this van, sales will be amazing and they will have a huge fan base coming to VW.
