Not long ago we don’t care what camera we bring along with us on a travel. We grab dslr, heavy or not we just think about to capture the moment. But now things got complicated, and we come home from travel, no matter what camera we bring, the photos we took still look shit. Because we over complicated everything too much. We just have too much cameras.

Omar, I think this may be my first video I've seen of yours. I just want to say I totally agree with you. We have a private family vlog (different than my main channel) where we basically just make home movies and I figured out that convenience and size beats out everything on casual trips...Especially when it comes with wide angle lenses and great stabilization. I love that i can hand off my Action came (Osmo) to my 13 year old and he can just talk. No fuss. The image quality may not be as solid as I'd prefer (especially in low light) but it's always good enough (often the audio is not good enough in crowded places but it's fine for family stuff.) I also use my iphone a lot but for the life of me I can't figure out why there is such a better image on the back than the front. You would think that Google/Apple would get that people use the front camera for selfies and would swap cameras if it made them look better. lol. Anyways, buried in the "donkey comments" here is the lead. You obviously went on an incredibly trip and looks like you had a blast doing it. Congratulations. Looked like fun.

I came to this same conclusion in the past 2 weeks. Picked up a GRiii for photography and a ZV1 for video. Each fit in my new Aer City Sling. Learned this on a recent trip to Chicago with my Z6. That was a trip that didn't get a lot of pics due to the size and just not wanting to go through the hassle of taking it out of a larger camera sling. Great vid...like always :)

Great commentary on travel goals and being realistic! One other system you might consider is the Olympus m4/3. Olympus has outrageous image stabilization, and while the camera body is not much smaller than say the Fuji or Sony 6000 series, their lenses are significantly smaller and lighter. For family "run and gun" photos, you can pack a decent kit in 2/3 or even 1/2 the size of any other system, and it won't weigh you down. And almost every camera has a flip out screen so that you can include yourself in all those important family shots to prove you were there! I'm speaking as someone who has used all three systems extensively (Nikon, Fuji, Olympus).

I really miss the days I shoot with Olympus. Their compactness & IS are superb. But its future is uncertain, and that's why I left the m4/3 system. Especially Fuji community in my local area is very supportive while Olympus is reticent.

Since you're in the Nikon ecosystem the Nikon Z50 is a great travel choice. The two kit lenses (small) are great quality and size. You might give that a whirl sometime and see if it fits your needs. I have the Z6ii, D500 and the Z50 -- the Z50 is my goto run and gun travel camera for walking around or whatever. Good video and insights - thanks and take care.

Yeah, I've been through this many times. The search for the "perfect travel camera" or the "perfect daily carry camera". After long months long trips in Southeast Asia, Europe and a few street photography phases, the results are in: It's depends on my intent or mindset. I either want to shoot something specific (like a cool temple in the jungle) OR Im just sightseeing. Do I want to shoot something specific? If yes --> Bring big camera. If no --> Your phone is great

This is so true. It's why Appalachian Trail through hikers who do YT use a phone. Size and weight matter there. Also, it's way easier to put together clips and upload them for daily hiker vlogs. Prior to getting my X-T3, I shot for over two years with my Pixel 2XL. I'm still using that phone BTW. And, the images still rock. I've shot hiking videos with it as well. The video looks good, not as stabilized as a GoPro, but it's good. And, the microphone works great for me as well. And, I think I composed images better on my Pixel. Probably because I had lots of practice and didn't have to worry about exposure settings. Great video.... love those ponies!!! :-) I'm starting to plan adventures like yours, but not with a motorcycle. I want to do car camping. Some will be at trailheads for hiking. Some, like yours, in beautiful small towns of Pennsylvania. Rock On Omar!!

I had been waiting for the results of this trip since you announced it. Like you, I agree the phone camera is great for quick grab on the go pics and is very workable for images to be posted in a book. However, like you discovered , a small camera with IBS is unbeatable for photos when time permits . Not just because of the raw files , but the JPEG’s are not so bad either . So, my small travel kit is not the xt20, which I love by the way, it the Em10 Mkii and my iPhone . Whatever kit we elect to take on our travels , your suggestions make great sense and for those of us who have not worked it out yet for themselves , your video provides the right balance of considerations to take onboard . I just wish I had seen it long ago before arriving at the same conclusion as you did on your trip . As the wise person somewhere said , it is never too late to learn haha. I loved the images from the Z 6 and had picked one up to try it in the hand . The cost of it and a good lens was a little more than I could justify and if I could convince myself I should get one, the bank manager at home would raise an eye brow or too - I dread what the reaction would be if I suggested a Leica ha ha . Great video Omar - keep them coming .

Take the smallest camera you can that can do video and photos AND can fit in your pocket or tank bag. That it’s often a phone, a point and shoot or a fixed lens camera like the Fujifilm x100 series. Glad you enjoyed the trip!! Btw, I grew up in NJ but wasn’t riding street bikes back then. Peace !!

Seems like a great trip! Congrats! Smartphones are really doing great things, they've come such a long way. I think your conclusion was appropriate for that kind of travel. The big camera does come out with me for hikes and stuff. Whereas it used to be Nikon now it's the X-T4 and with the IBIS built-in now it's been a fun camera. I don't know if it's because I drink a lot of coffee and handheld shooting but even the previous x-t2 and x-t3 without IBIS was too jittery for me. With IBIS, whether it's Nikon or Fuji, things get much nicer. Do you use ND filters when doing hikes? Great video, interesting perspective. Happy Trails!

I noticed that every time my family and I go to the beach, restaurant, outing; I bring my DSLR around but tend not to used it more often, mainly because of it's size and weight .. But the XE2 I took on vacation last week was a joy to use .. It makes you shoot more and more .. It also has the effect that you're proud to show your Fuji camera hanging on your neck or your side ..

Not too long after I got back I got a preowned Fuji X camera and a Ricoh GR. One of my best decisions. Now looking back that was silly of me but even when I wasn't so silly I question myself why I needed to take a (1) full frame dSLR, maybe it was the only modern camera I had.

You don't have to worry about your Z6ll no matter where you are. I just finished my expedition to North Siberia, at -41C temperatures, few months back with my D5 and the Z6 I borrowed, as well as being to Central African Countries, South Africa and Madagascar up until last week where we were on 37+C temperatures for an entire month with the Z6ll I borrowed. The Z6 and Z6ll handled heavy rain, light hail hits, mud, high humidity, heavy dusty and sandy winds, extreme temperatures and so on and so forth, just as good as my D5, so well in fact, that I will finally be selling my D5 and getting a Z6ll before I even hop onto the Z9 train! Everywhere a D5 can go, Z6ll can as well! Everything a D5 can take, Z6ll can as well! Cheers! :D

@@sexysilversurfer I'm not that deep into tech aspect of cameras, so I don't know how weatherproofing is even rated but I would guess that Z6/Z6ll - at the very least - are rated close to or as high as D5 is, because they both handled the extreme conditions we shot in, as good as my D5 did.
@nogerboher5266
@nogerboher5266 2 жыл бұрын
@@turgs1 When I went on the most recent expeditions with the Z6ll, I was given two extra batteries, on top of the two I already had in the grip. We were out and about for 8 to 10 hours a day, shooting and I never had to switch to the third of fourth batteries. The two I had in the grip were enough to last me the whole day. The only time I had to use more than two batteries, was when I was in Siberia with the Z6, because the temperatures there are just so extreme that your camera simply gobbles up one battery from 100 to 0 in just a few hours of use. Also, I would like to note that your battery longevity depends on the way you use your camera. My friend, for example, likes to look at the back LCD when shooting and he likes to mess with the options a lot, again, using the back LCD, so he went through almost 5 batteries a day. I only use the back LCD to inspect some of the shots - and I do it for only a few seconds at a time, so one battery lasts me way longer compared to someone like my friend. (Fun fact: My friend burns through batteries so quick that he had to buy a 85,000 mAH powerbank and a portable USB-C solar panel charger. :D)

Now it’s only my phone that I’m taking with me. Not only is it easier to carry and operate but also the editing, it’s there already and there’s no need to get the footage from one sd card to the pc, I just do the whole thing on the phone itself! Btw, is the motorcycle video available to watch on KZfaq? I’d be happy to watch that.

I am not a videographer and don’t really like video editing so much, so this was and still is a convenient way to preserve memories. For photography though this is a different story. I will carry my camera with an all purpose lens like the 18-200mm nikkor and I might bring along a 11-16mm for astrophotography. That’s it. Some filters, batteries, chargers and a head torch for the night stuff. Even with this set up you get to carry a lot including a travel tripod which I forgot to mention. Hello from a fella adventure rider, I always love seeing the Himalayan and hope you enjoy the bike. I recently did the MABDR together with my daughter (highly recommend it). After going back and forth I decided to take only my Nikon with a zoom lens and some batteries. I didn't even take a camera bag. I wrapped my camera in a towel and put her in the top bag (batteries in a sandwich bag). I left the goPro at home, now why would I do such a thing? Really easy decision! There are millions of motorcycle videos out there and 98% are boring. But the main reason was that we wanted to enjoy the ride and take in all the surroundings/scenery. If there was a photo opportunity we stopped, I unrolled the towel, took some pics and off we go. The same goes for other travel, local or overseas. All this stuff is just overkill! Give me any camera and I will capture the moment in time and if you need video and your cam isn't that great then use your smartphone. Keep it simple and enjoy your travels. Cheers

Hi Omar, great video!! I'm agree with you... my travel combination (just to share with you): Fuji X-S10 + DJI osmo action + Google pixel 4a + DJI Mavic Mini. I choose small camera for travel and trekking, but sometimes the phone is better, especially during long trekking session ;-)

Thank you Omar. I'll be travelling this summer with family and it's our first big trip as a family in a while so for the past few months I've been stressing about what camera I should bring. I should probably clarify, by camera I mean which phone because I'm by no means a photographer. I just like taking photos 😊 I bought a Google pixel 3 eventhough I have an Phone 12 mini because I just don't like the colours of the iPhone. I know the Google pixel 3 is an old phone but I will exclusively be using it for still photos and the iPhone for videos. Thanks again for the great video!

Nice bike! 👍 I do long distance rides for filming and have switched to just taking a bunch of gopros and my phone of course. They're the most compact (and affordable if you buy gopro 5-7s) video cameras to fit in limited luggage space. But with that, I'm still unrealistically trying to rationalize taking my Fuji until I start packing. I never miss it on the ride though...

i found a great suggestion for light weight travel lens for my z6 and/or z6ii from guy on monochrome memories. He suggested trying out the Nikon Z DX 16-50 VR kit lens for general walkaround pics. Pancake like lens under $300, very light. snapshot images look great , turns z6 in to a pocket like crop camera, with 24-75 equivelent, only drawback is f3.5 - to 6.3 but Z6 lowlight combing with vr and ibis works well in lowlight. I was pleasantly surprised by image quality, would be interested in your evaluation.

Just came back from a multi-day hiking trip. I do photos 90% of the time. Used my phone to take picture on the go while hiking. And used my fujifilm xt20 when I was settled down in camp. If I'm doing less hiking and backpack weight isn't an issue, I would take my phone and my DSLR. Great review

Well personally I use my xt 30 or an old lightweight analog slr, but I don't travel with a bike. I wonder if a compact camera or some kind of dji osmos would have given you better results aligned with your goals on this trip

Hi from 'downunder' Omar, I enjoy all your vids and this was a very thoughtful episode. Convenience rules on two wheels. I take most of my photos while out on a motorcycle. I covet the X-T20 but finances are tight and adding the 'right' lens(es) takes it out my wallet's comfort zone. My solution was the iPhone 11 Pro (13/26/52 equivalent) and a Canon G5Xii both pre-loved. They each easily fit a pocket and the Canon has an evf, tilt screen and 24-120 lens on a 1" sensor. I just know I wouldn't carry anything bigger. Works for me and that I guess is the point. Take care and stay safe. Trevor.

My Oly PEN-F with the 12-40 is like the perfect camera, if it weren't so expensive I'd pick up the 16-55 for my Fuji because it's probably similar in terms of usefulness. Honestly a lens like that plus one of the really wide Laowa lenses (for like the inside of churches and buildings and stuff) is pretty much all I need, then I can also carry the Ricoh GR2 in my little bitty camera bag so I can hand it to a companion for more photos.

When I go for any urban and rural based trips that do not involve wet weather shooting in wilderness, my priority is the lightness of my bag since I’ll be lugging it from early morning to late at night: 1. My iPhone Pro Max - wide angle shots 2. XE 4 + 35mm f2

I take Fuji X100V for compact ;) and if I want really wide shots - XT4 with XF 16-80, this works well, if it's just a walk X100V is always with me. If this is longer trip XT4 is not so big also :)

Excellent points IMO. Convenience and easy access beats "quality" in many (if not most) situations. It's also (+ price) why P&S cameras had 90% of the market until smart phones with good cameras came. Still some really good compact cameras available (like Sony RX100) that's an interesting option between phone/GoPro image quality and small system cameras.

As a fellow biker I can understand your situation. Often from rides I have photos from the Hero 7 and my Pixel 4a, either due to time or space. I do try to take my X-T200, but sometimes the weather isn't so good so it stays in the drybag/topbox. The GoPro isn't so good for photos, but if you just need an image to trigger the memory, it's adequate, and I've got some fun video and photos from it in crazy weather and situations I wouldn't take another camera out in.

I use the brilliant X70 with the 21mm WA adapter as an option and I also LOVE my tiny silver X30 with an X-Trans sensor and OIS zoom giving image quality that just shouldn't be possible! You should add one to your collection! I shoot professionally with X-T3, X-T4, X-H1 and GFX bodies but I would NEVER sell my X70 and X30 cameras - they are absolute jewels!

Another important question to ask oneself is how long will I be on the road. Carrying more than a couple of cameras on a weekend trip isn't much of a concern for me. But on the road for a month or more makes every unnecessary piece of equipment, for me at least, feel awfully burdensome while riding my motorcycle. I take a small Leica d-lux 7, and my Fujifilm x100F. My reasonably sharp Sena helmet camera, takes still photographs as well as videos. It is also an FM radio, which can come in handy on long, rainy days on the road. I enjoy your channel.

I bought a secondhand RX100mkII last year, because I was curious if those small pocket cameras were for me. To my surprise, It gets used a lot, even though the camera is from 2014, pretty good 1080 video as well. It's only when I want to get creative I use my A7II and mostly with vintage lenses, to get a completely different look.

Very interesting video, thank you Omar. I've questionned myself many times about what to bring with me for travel, winter mountain trip, ski trip, and so on. Painful dilemma ! So now I bring a Fujifilm X-T5 for severe conditions outdoors shooting, an X-E2 + 27mm f/2.8 for stealth downtown shooting, a GoPro for action short movies, and b.....hit cell phone.

Seems that you had a grrrrreat time! :-D And I agree...but... The ergonomics of a phone can be a real pain. How many times already I hit the 'release button' without any response. Or because of an update buttons and functionalities had changed. I think with a real camera you're much better prepared for the moment. And rather than taking pictures with a phone it is more like snapshotting. The experience is completely different and in the end that affects the images.

IMO, the phones have replaced the gopro for me, insta360 + reframe is the bomb for b-roll action shots on a moped or even a boat. Hip holster + Sony A7siii + 24 or 35 or 28-60 can be pretty small these days, not having to juggle between multiple cameras that most folks probably dont have access to. files are delicious.

as a motorcycle guy, from nyc, who spent summers in northwest new jersey, it was a delight to try to figure out where your trip took you. calicoon ny? dingmen's ferry, pa? rt 97 along the delaware river. so much fun. as for cameras, i wrestle with my version of this issue way too often. last evening, i did a night walkabout in midtown nyc. so much to see. but what camera? my big, full frame, nikon D750? my smaller fuji X-T1? my m43, panasonic gx85 which is the only camera i had with stabilization? i went with the gx85. the result: maybe a dozen keepers. thanks for the effort and sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber.

Check out Giant Loop, Mosko Moto or Enduristan for waterproof tank bags that’ll make life easier on the road. ProTaper or Renthal for replacement handlebars that’ll be a lot stronger also. And I agree, ILC cameras and motorbiking can be tricky to mix. You may be a good candidate for a Ricoh GR III for these sorts of trips, they still have the “real camera” magic in the images, but pack down small and are simple to operate.
