I have never liked shopping. The more I see in store, the faster I get overwhelmed and buy nothing at all. 😅 I saved a lot over the last 15 years (I‘m 37) wearing the same style. However, I love travelling and that‘s where my money usually goes making memories all over the world. ❤️

The more i learn about what makes a quality product and what suits me, the more i get tired of shopping because finding an item that meets both specifications is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I end up with nice pieces now but only after a while of shopping, so now if it's not a need I'm getting tired of doing the whole shoping process for itz it's only satisfying when i actually need the item in my wardrobe.

I wish I lived in a part of the world where there weren't such extremes of temperature. +35°C or higher in summer, -25° in winter. The amount of clothes you need for that is insane. Just footwear alone: super warm boots for the city in winter, super warm dressier boots, superwarm tall boots for if you need to shovel snow up to your waist, regular-warm boots, regular warm dressier boots, rain boots of varying heights, warm running shoes, lighter running shoes, high heels, flats, numerous pairs of sandals of varying types for summer, the list goes on. And good quality winter stuff is bloody expensive.

Yes I can imagine that’s really tough to have such extreme seasons. I guess practicality always wins and if you need it, you need it! Definitely buying good quality at least means you don’t have to constantly shop x

100%. In such climate you need to have basically 9 wardrobes - for winter, mid season and summer - nice pieces for work, basic pieces to walk around/vacation and something practical/ugly to walk a dog or work in the garden. I can not downsize that. Minimalism is just a joke in my climate )))

Nobody needs to own that many styles of clothing. No one on this earth needs to own a pair of heels or a pair of dressy boots. Nobody needs all those styles of shoes just for summer. I literally wear either Crocs or cheap jelly shoes in summer and my life hasn't ended. In winter all you need are sneakers and a pair of winter hiking boots. If you work in a professional environment then you need a pair of professional looking shoes but you can literally just slip into them when you get into work and they don't have to be heels or dressy flats, they can be orthopedic shoes or whatever and you can buy those used or at a discount. You can buy winter coats already used. You can buy knitwear already used. You can buy rain boots already used. You are a slave to patriarchal beauty standards for women. You feel like you have to wear all these different trending styles to be accepted. I used to feel this way despite never having the money and I still managed to be physically comfortable. I have lived in Bulgaria where the seasons are unbearable and women absolutely can't afford all those different clothes. The biggest scam is also the bra industry. I am technically a size 38J and I don't wear a bra anymore. I have never been more physically comfortable. Women are told that they need to lift, suck and pull everything in to be socially acceptable. They are told that how they already are when they don't buy all this expensive shit is ugly and unacceptable. It's fucking ridiculous. I'm not saying I don't have my own personal style, I live for sanrio and florals and ultra feminine, loose flowy, boho, oversized styles, but I don't buy clothes all the time and I refuse to spend a lot of money on anything and I don't care if I look a bit 'mis matched' and I'm not the pinnacle of fashion.

I live in such climate as well. Working from home is a blessing for me when it comes to my wardrobe. Nobody would give a f if I was sitting in my pyjamas all day (I don’t, but I mostly wear athleisure as I walk my son to the kindergarden). But even when I was working from office on daily basis, I didn’t need so many pairs of shoes. And regarding transition between seasons, I have the same set for winter -> spring and autumn -> winter also I have one set for spring -> summer -> autumn. But generally I have a base clothes I can wear the year round, and then some season specific, but they are in minority.

Thank you for making this video it’s like the universe knew I needed a kick up the bum. I’ve tried so many times to stop shopping but I fall back in the trap again. I think I set too much of a challenge saying that’s it no more shopping no limits, rules just no more shopping ever!! And when it’s going well I think great I’m sorted and treat myself!!! I’m ashamed to say I’m in my 40’s and still don’t have this sorted 😢 But I find it so inspiring seeing younger woman stand up and say no I’m not living my life like this so it’s time to try again this time it’s for 3 months, I have more than enough so I’m challenging myself to make my clothes work for me, fingers crossed this is the time ❤

I wanted to stop shopping for a year or two now, I really got sucked in about five years ago. When I realised I needed to stop, I used to shop on and off anyway, then be annoyed with myself. I watched similar videos to help me, but I still didn’t feel I could stop. Then I realised that I was buying constantly because I was watching clothes all the time and started borrowing books from library instead to help me to pass my resting time in different way. It only recently hit me, that my wardrobe was too full and I can’t fit any more stuff, that’s when I didn’t want to look at clothes any more. It’s been a month, I still looked at clothes from time to time, desired them and left it till later. Mentally I could already do it, then it just didn’t make any sense. I want to give my wardrobe some love now and I will focus on wardrobe clarity and declutterring. For once I felt satisfied with what I’ve got.

I used to buy tons of cloths and shoes, was spending every cent I had (and honestly even more) online. Than I had a boy and stopped working, since I had no money of my own anymore, just a joint bank account with my husband I had to stop shopping cold turkey. I thought it would be very hard, but to my surprise it was not. After a short while I felt liberated. I used to love my closet, suddenly it was a burden. I didn‘t want to spend my little free time i had in the evening arranging cloths I never had any occasion to wear anyway and that didnt fit my body nor my new lifestyle anymore. Started selling everything, couldnt believe how much stuff I had, how much of it was brand new and how much money I had wasted!!! It’s 8 years later now, today I enjoy a small wardrobe and could never go back, it just hurts me to know in what stupid way I used to spend all my money

I’m a patient buyer and will wait for end of season sales. I do twice a year wardrobe decluttering as I need space in my wardrobes. Some of my pieces of clothing I’ve had for years now, and i still love wearing them. Our money is precious and earned from hard work, and I would rather have some for later than nothing at all.

Thank goodness that I never got into fast fashion. I am a child of the children of the Depression. I was taught to use, reuse, recycle, and to live frugally. I was also inspired by my grandmothers, aunt and mother, to create some of my own clothes, and other items. I still remember the joy that I had, when wearing creations that they made for me. I have been making some of my own clothes, and clothes for my family, and household items, for a long time. Now in this time of inflation, I am returning to do more of this. It is therapeutic, and gives instant gratification, as you can enjoy the fruits of your own creativity. I think about now, and for what I will need in next few years.

It’s such a special thing to be able to make your own clothes, and for your family. Sewing is definitely a lost art that unfortunately isn’t being handed down from generations anymore. I plan to make clothes for my kids when the time comes. But I find sometimes the fabric that is available to me is almost as cheap as the clothes in the shop. X

@@gemmaamclean Some ways to save money, and have better quality fabrics: Look in your closet, to find clothes that you wouldn’t wear anymore, but where the fabric is still in good condition. These items are no longer clothing, but should be seen as pieces of fabric, to cut up and use again. Thrifting may also be a good source of fabrics. People give away clothing that no longer fits, or is out of style. The fabrics may still be in good condition, and from the recent era, when the quality was good. Some of the joyous items that were made for me as a child, were made from very wonderful fabrics, from used clothing that was remade for me.

Great and informative video as always. I started my no buy year last year in November and so far it’s going great. Not purchase a single new thing, just few make up replacements that I was running out of it. I decided to try whole year no buy. Also I did huge closet declutter and donate 80% of my clothes. I’m trying to figure out the style I love and it’s practical this year and purchase only new items only if work with my style. Currently I’m stay at home mom and don’t have income and taht helps me no thing about shopping /spending money on things that I don’t need!

This year I challenged myself to a low buy clothing year and to help me with this I had to keep a running list on my phone of everything I bought. This has been eye opening. I wouldn't say I have been spending like crazy, but I would not say I've done a low buy so far. The list has slowed me down, I think, with continuing to buy so much. I look over the list as a reminder of all I added to my closet (I buy 2nd hand and often out of season so a lot of these new additions are unworn and packed away for winter) to work on being satisfied. It is a struggle!
@gemmaamclean

Such a great idea keeping a list of what you buy. I wish I had kept track of anything new that entered my closet, as I’ve had some brands pieces come in, even if I haven’t ‘technically’ shopped. I think when my no buy is finished I’ll do a low-buy and keep track then. Maybe for the moment you can be happy with having more awareness around your spending, even if it hasn’t changed all that much yet. I think it will come with time. Xx

I bought last piece of clothing in December and this was stupid. Recently I decluttered my wardrobe and it's amazing Soon I will move to my new apartment, and as a mortgage is coming I will not buy clothes, shoes or kitchen stuff unless absolutely necessary. Movings as well as cleaning apartment after my deceased parents were lessons that most of clothes are useless and not needed. Having less saves a space and our wallet.

I have an ins and outs list on my phone. The goal is that the ins are lower than outs. Everything that gets worn out, declutterred or donated goes in the outs list. And you see really quickly that it takes forever for something to be worn out. So that is eye opening. I also use habit tracking app daily to note down if i made any clothes or beauty purchases and it actually seems to help. It so fun to see that your success rate is high and it also keeps you mindful and accountable. I have been keeping a spreadsheet of clothing and beauty stuff with prices, when bought and when worn first. That started as just trying to keep track but also is eye opening in a sense that i had to buy something but 6 months later still not worn it... i am not doing a no buy but defintely a very low buy and also these methods have been really helpful and grounding to me.

My no buy is going sorta well !! It's like a roller coaster tbh, I realised I attach a LOT of my self worth to what clothes I wear, I used to shop a LOT for my fantasy self and also never think about how sustainable my clothes were or whether I'd even want to wear them in the long run. I started around the middle of January and these changes are slowly setting in, which im very happy about . I also realised how much I looked to buying something or anything at all , to regulate my emotions instead of doing the proper deep work. I am also struggling with being more compassionate towards myself overall and not blaming me when I do find myself succumbing to old mental habits and looking for those superficial hits of dopamine. It has also made me look at all kinds if consumption related habits that I have , like the content I consume on social media, the food I eat and made me critical and more intentional about it all !

@@gemmaamclean I live in china and order fabric directly from the factory. You wouldn't believe the technology they have in these factories. They have a computerized machine for everything and they are able to mass produce so rapidly. I recently ordered 6 meters of calico cotton with a ditzy floral design and it was around £6 in UK money. Sellers order this in western countries plus shipping and they jack up the price to make a profit.
