Everyone reading this, be warned. Thinkpadphilia is an uncontrollable urge to collect IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad-series portable laptop computers. It is an extremely addictive affliction that goes hand in hand with GNU/Linux mania (or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU+Linux mania) that might, in extreme cases, escalate to BSD-fetishism and other obscure conditions. - Sent from one of my Lenovo Thinkpads

One thing I love about Thinkpads is the drainage holes. Those are little holes under the keyboard that go through the entire laptop so if you ever spill any liquid onto the keyboard, it can safely drain through those holes instead of into the laptop. Thanks to this, I only had to replace the $50 keyboard of my sister's Thinkpad instead of the whole laptop. And the keyboard was super easy to replace on top of everything else.

My bargain was a T480S, Core i5 8250, 16 gb RAM, in almost perfect condition, purchased a year ago for $250 on Craigslist . I like it just as much as a Yoga 9i I bought a month ago (yes, I'm somewhat of a hoarder) for almost $1000! Plus, the T480S doesn't burn my legs like the Yoga 9i. Older doesn't mean obsolete.

At work I had a Lenovo ThinkPad T460... I fell in love with the keyboard. I bought a certified refurbished T470 for personal use. It came with Windows 10 Pro. I'd say its lean, meaning I use it primarily for writing, surfing the net, watching KZfaq videos, and doing classes and meetups via Zoom and/or Microsoft TEAM. I'm not a gamer so that kind of horsepower is not an issue. My plan is to move it to Linux when Windows 10 is no longer supported. I've installed Linux on a few old laptops of mine in the past. Again, it's has a great keyboard and with the docking station I have a 2nd monitor and am connected to stereo system when I'm watching videos. When I head out I can just pop it off the docking station and carry it in my briefcase. I paid about $270. One of the best tech purchases I've ever made.

I've bought 4 thinkpads over the years. My winning formula as been to buy something that was bleeding edge 2 years ago. I have put linux on all of them and they just worked. I had one that finally died - I took the SSD out of it and put it in a significantly newer one - and everything just worked. (writing this on a 5 year old X1 Carbon which is still going strong).

Back in the late 90s, I worked at IBM Canada as an OS/2 product specialist, where I provided 3rd level OS/2 support and also supported some apps on Windows 95 & NT. I was also on the team that built standard desktops for IBM Canada employees. At any time, I might have a half dozen or so ThinkPads, of different models, at my desk. Back in those days, the hard drives were user swappable, so I had several of those at my desk too, with different operating systems on them. In addition to our regular work, we were also encouraged to start working with Linux on company time. Since then, I have been partial to ThinkPads, whether made by IBM or Lenovo and over the years bought a couple for myself. One problem with ThinkPads is they're so durable they're obsolete long before you find a need to replace them. My current E520 was bought in Oct. 2011 and it's still going strong. I have openSUSE Linux on it, as well as Windows 10. However, I would never buy a non ThinkPad Lenovo, as they're garbage in comparison. BTW, that red thing is called a TrackPoint, which I greatly prefer to touch pads. The first time I used a touch pad was on a Toshiba notebook, with Windows 95. I've hated touch pads ever since. Incidentally, I also have Windows 10, Windows 98 and OS/2 Warp 4 in Virtualbox VMs on it. I have also maxed out the memory at 8 GB and replaced the hard drive a couple of times. It currently has a 1 TB SSD in it. What's missing is 5 GHz WiFi. If it was practical to replace the WiFi card, I would have. Otherwise, it still continues to meet my needs, more than 11 years after I bought it.

Screen going flat is useful when using it in a work environment. I use an HP that does the same thing at work, and can literally use it in any situation whilst still being able to access the keyboard. It becomes an oversized tablet. You can lay it on your legs, you can hold it with one hand vertically against a wall, power board, server, racking etc. You can walk through a warehouse with a powerful data accessing machine at your fingertips. In meetings, you can sit up, and lay the screen further back to actually see it. etc

Just love your review and humor. Everything you mentioned is spot-on. I bought a 6300u i-5 T470s about 7 months ago for $175, after answering a Craigslist ad. Like yours, mine needed one battery, but it was still getting about 3.5 hours. It came with 16 gb of RAM, but I purchased another 16 gb from Crucial from a sale for $56. So I'm in it for $281. When I went into the system, I noticed that it still had 3 months left on its warranty. I had the screen, bezel, lid, and keyboard replaced for free under warranty. The Lenovo tech met me at a local Starbucks and did everything there within 20 minutes. He steered me to an ebay sell that sold quality OEM batteries for a lot less than Lenovo. I replaced one and I'm now getting almost 7 hours of battery life. The 1080p screen is sharp, but isn't the brightest. That said, I always turn the brightness of my screens down, so nothing lost here. I'm not a gamer so speed is not an issue. It's fast when using Photoshop or editing video. I've been a Thinkpad user for years because of the keyboard and Trackpoint. Honestly I can't use a notebook without that little red trackpoint. My everyday notebook is still a Lenovo Thinkpad T430s from 2012. It's an i5 with 16 gb of RAM and a 256 gb SSD. I use it constantly and it's never let me down. It's still powerful enough to do Photoshop and video edition...and it's 10-years-old. The reason that I purchased the T470s was to have a light computer to take on the road. It's certainly filled that and more. It's a coffee shop warrior. I always enjoy using it. One strange thing is that card slot. I have no idea what it's good for? But I do appreciate the Thunderbolt 3/USB 3 port, two separate charging ports. 3 USB-3.0 ports, Ethernet port, and full-size HDMI port. The previous owner installed Windows 11...not quite sure how. I spent 2 hours un-Microsofting Windows 11. Windows has gone from being an operating system and morphing into a data collection service. It's a shame but I was able to clean the T470s using some great KZfaq instructional videos. At least I'll be futureproofed after 2025. Given how long my T430s has lasted without issue, I would think that your machine will be chugging away in 2032.

Great video! Some time ago I bought a refurbished T460 and I just love it. It had a dent in one of it's corners. Rest of the laptop was in great condition. I installed Linux on it and couldn't be happier. Most of heavy processing I do in the cloud anyway. Checked the batteries with upower and they still go around 85% of max cap. One thing which is cool about those refurbished laptops is, that accessories are super cheap. I bought a docking station for less than 20€. In the future I will probably mostly try to buy refurbished laptops.

i got my own bargain like a week ago aswell, a gen 1 yoga x1! paid £209 for it and was the top of the line version in 2016 with 6600u , 512gb nvme , 1440p touchscreen oled and 16gb ram! couldnt be happier with it, bonus with it having a rather great wacom pen. these gen thinkpads are so easy to come across now for cheap

I have a T470 currently for work, I was a contractor when I came on with the company originally, and now that I am a direct hire, I am supposed to get a new one, but I have to say that the 470 is rocking it out every day!

I have put the T470 through it’s paces working on communications equipment in mines. It meets a bunch of Mil-specs so it’s definitely durable, and it’s built so well.

My favourite laptop is the HP 840 series. My company issued one and I loved it to bits. Bought a couple of them from a dinky shop and they run great. Added memory, storage and they suit my purpose nicely. I got a cheap Thinkpad, but didn't like the placement of the Cntrl and Fn keys. But I keep hearing about these legendary pieces and I am tempted. Thanks for the information about the pawn shop, got a new haunt to look for deals.

Love my 2nd hand Thinkpad but it's a very different beast. X1 Yoga with an i7 8665U and 16GB of RAM. The battery came with only 15% wear and the laptop only cost me £300. Very happy with an ultrabook of that calibre for that price. It saw me easily through university (as a compsci student doing a lot of hardware synthesis for the FPGA)

I have a T450 with Linux Mint (as well as Win7) and it's perfect for any task. I like typing on it because its keyboard very comfy. I think that from T450 to T480 they are good in this series. When I was using, a T490 was killed in action with many wounds on it. So I've bargained my second T490 for a P53 on my workplace. In the P53, I feel that the the old school Thinkpad series were reborn.

I ended up with a T480 assigned to me during a project. I didn't want to give it back. That first ThinkPad put me down the rabbit hole...now I have quite the collection and can't wait to get an X2100 or the like.

right on and great video. subbed. I picked up a T480 for $480 CAD and its an amazing machine.. I was also on the fence to spend $3000 for the MBP 14" and I couldn't justify spending that much for my workflow.. This is my first Thinkpad and it's absolutely stunning. My brother used T61 before and he still has it running Win 7 I believe. I feel like its better to get older Thinkpads than newest laptops if you don't run resource heavy task. My concern with MBP was that you can't upgrade anything anymore and Apple wants $400 for 16GB upgrade (MBP comes with 16GB already) for total of 32 but then I realized that its quite steep for what my needs are. So then I started searching for used market and came across T480 and apparently its the last model which you can upgrade ram and hard drive for.

Watching from my X1 Carbon from Q2 2012. It won't die -- still fast and responsive. Nice to know I can get something twice as fast for $200 when the time comes.

This video made me buy my T470s i7 and had it 6 months maybe a bit more and completely happy with it. I havent upgraded the battery or ram yet (have 16 gigs already) and working out perfectly for what i use it/need it for at the moment. Thank yiu for your review.

That 180 degree opening is great if you have to close any tickets or do any work behind a steering wheel while parked. I got so attached of my T15 work laptop that I'm looking to get another one to have in hand just in case. Good stuff!

I picked up a p53s with i7-8665u from my company dumpster, in pretty good condition but with broken screen. Spent $100 for a LCD on amazon and another $100 on a 1tb nvme ssd. Added another 16gb of ddr4 ram which also pulled from stuff in the dumpster for a total ram of 32gb (16 on board). Now it's a perfect laptop for my wife haha.

I currently have a T460s and it does everything I need of it. I've always wanted to own a Thinkpad, and I finally got one this year. One of those few times when my expectations weren't disappointed.

I had a higher-end Lenovo T series bought new for Computer Science College. I have done some upgrades over the years, and one of my sons uses it for homeschooling. I also picked up T470 for my other son for homeschooling. It works great. Most of their work is on a website watching videos, answering questions, and taking tests. Office apps like Word and PowerPoint work great. Even when my kids do programming as part of their school, these work great. I was sold on the quality of the keyboard after hearing about how old-school writers only use Lenovo (IBM) laptops. I now have a Lenovo P17 Gen 2 for my software development work, and the keyboard and performance are great.

My current daily driver is a t490 with the i7-8665u, 16GB of ram plus the 8 extra I added, a 512GB ssd and the 1440p glossy(only gripe) screen I got from CL in Sept of '21 for $380. It's under warranty until May of '23, 3 year warranties on business class stuff is awesome. I think they were going for over $700 at the time, far and away the nicest laptop I've ever owned. It'll just about handle BF3 lol.

I’ve been rocking a T480 with an i5 for awhile now, and it does everything I could ever need. I got it dirt cheap on eBay, upgraded the SSD and reapplied thermal paste. I use Linux, but not even a light weight distro and I have zero complaints.

Bought mine new when it came out, still going strong. I even searched out a dock for it which is actually pretty awesome.

Welcome to the thinkpad club! I think you've hit the best generation, the *70 series. I have a L450 which is great except for the weak i5-5200u but I've had it since a black friday sale and still love it to bits. Keyboard is amazing, pointing stick is great (wouldn't have a laptop without one - though my work HP elite has one that sucks ballz) and it's all user servicable with no soldered RAM (or anything except CPU/GPU) You also have the same camera/laptop bag as me and yeah the 4xx size is a perfect fit for it! Yay for 14" laptops!

Lenovo T series are all I've ever owned, started with a T60, T420, now a T440S. I am considering a used T480S with the quad core i7 as my next upgrade for you guessed it, low second hand prices. I have never bought one brand new. Great video thanks for sharing.

T470 is the last good Thinkpad. I'm saying that as Lenovo employee. The new gen are absolute trash. I dont know what our devs are thinking or if Managment are forcing them to cut corners.

I have a Yoga 460 that's of a similar vintage as the T470, except that it takes that screen trick you did another 180 degrees further. The deck on the keyboard also lifts up in this action to lock the keys in place when it's in tablet mode. Used to be my work laptop, but my supervisor gave it to me since I'd said how nice it was when we were switching to Dell laptops across the board. No soldered on RAM like the T470 and still has the single RAM slot. However, it's still my favorite laptop to use due to the keyboard and the screen.

I'm a Linux (Endeavour OS) user and do some casual classic gaming as well as a bit of light coding, so it's perfect for a nice compact travel laptop that doesn't make me burst out in tears the moment I scratch the shell. Do the 460 and 470 both come with backlit keyboards?

Nice video. I buy used Dell Latitudes on the same principle, they are well made and well speced, companies lease loads of them and then they get dumped on the aftermarket after three years' use at a fraction of their original list price so there is a lot to be said for vanilla business machines.

Gold star for the pic of Garden of the Gods on the screen. I have a T530 with an i5 CPU and I love it. I've been looking into some upgrades. I upgraded a few different ThinkPads for family and friends lately. Edit to add that mine came with Windows 11 (which was debloated) and its running fine.

Came for the Thinkpad love, commenting because FTL is my most played game on Steam and it was fun to see in the video.

I got a thinkpad t480 back in 2018 for college and it survived the whole journey, I was still using it daily up until last week when I built a PC with the money from my first full time job. Has a 4 core 8 thread i5 8350u and also an mx150 gpu. Never had any problems with it running any engineering workloads (code, CAD, FEA, etc). Cpu is rated for 15 watts but as long as it's running cool, I've seen it do 30+ watts sustained. I did some image rendering for some projects which could take a long time on it but I found a piece of software called tpfancontrol which really breathed new life into my machine. It basically lets you mess with the BIOS fan curve so I just cranked it up to reduce overheating bottlenecks, runs great under load (if you can get past the added noise of the tiny fan spinning at 5000 rpm), and I'm even able to run some light esport titles on it. The internal battery died a long time ago but I paid $50 for a 72 watt hour replacement battery ~2 years ago and can still easily get 4-5 hours on battery when on power saving mode. Nowadays I'm just more conscious of using Lenovo Vantage to limit my charging to 85% to save on battery health. Also upgraded to 16 gb ram last year. Probably ran for a bit over $1000 back then but definitely worth it imo, excellent and resilient machine, I'll be using this thing until it dies and I'll be very sad once that happens.

Great review thanks. I'm a big fan of quality superceded gear instead of weak new stuff. I scored an amazing deal on a secondhand Huawei AMD 3500u powered notebook and its going well. That CPU is essentially two of the 6600Us in the lenovo and the screen on mine is superior. However, the single stick of soldered RAM hamstrings the 3500U badly. I suspect that the lenovo with 16 gigs of RAM in dual channel config would be the better option for getting proper work done. Alt tabbing through lots of stuff on mine bogs down badly beyond a certain point. I suspect one of these Lenovos with new batteries and a correctly matched extra stick of RAM would be useful for years.

I'm partial to the X series from Lenovo. They have most of the specs of the T series, but also a touchscreen. Badass little machines. Love the mouse nub thing too.

I've got the t470 with the i5 7th gen for almost 5 years, I've updated all that I could, I added a second disk on the extra pciE port, and two 8gb sticks of ram, and it still is my working laptop, programming in it is great, even using the touchscreen that for android emulation is useful too. Docker runs great too even though the core is not that heavy duty.

I bought a Thinkpad T470 with a 6th Gen i5, 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD off eBay in August. Had a little scratch on it, but it's been my daily for doing generic tasks such as emails, coursework and it's been a dream to own. Paid about $135 for it and it's been amazing. Battery holds a super good charge and it can even handle a few basic games like Minecraft or even ROBLOX if a friend needs to borrow it.

I just bought t70s last week , install zorin os and i am really happy with this laptop. Keyboard is amazing .

Had my Thinkpad since 2008 and still going great. It did have some major work done over the years but I won't trade it for anything.

I still use daily a 10-year-old ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 1), that's how tough and durable they are. In next couple of years I may upgrade to a Gen 10 or X1 Extreme. Before ThinkPad I had various laptops from HP, Sony Vaio, etc... they all fell apart after a couple of years. Also I find the Trackpoint much easier and faster than a trackpad, once you get the hang of it (the trick is holding it down with your middle finger and your thumb on the buttons.)

After having MacBooks for years, I got a thinkpad with a new job.. wow great keyboard, loads of ports, fantastic battery life, replaceable battery, just great. Got rid of my crap MacBook Pro and bought a Lenovo for myself and a 27" external screen with built in mic speakers and camera.. loving it.

Watched this on my T470s with upgraded RAM and can assure you it's a wonderful computer. I even use it for things like digital sculpting on Zbrush and it handles pretty amazingly.

I have an x220 from maybe 2012 still going strong with Linux Mint. Planning to replace it soon but 10 years is a pretty good life for a laptop I think!

I got a T420s for Windows XP compatibility, but it still works well with Windows 10 if I need it to, also with a Core i7 in it. I love these things.

I'm usually someone who prefers the business ranges of HP or Asus (loved HP's ProBook series back in the day), but the Thinkpad series usually has some great entries and I have several friends in the IT field who swear by them.

I swear, if I ever get another laptop it's gonna be a thinkpad. My father used their products for as long as I can remember and as far as I'm concerned, they seem to do a pretty great job.

I daily a T430 and I have a T430S do background work for me. I built my mother a T430, and then built my father a T430 too. I love these laptops.

I used a T460 for a few years at work and was surprised at how well a dual core i5 would keep up (although I would go for a quad core still if given the choice). Recently got 'upgraded' to a T14 and it's probably the worst laptop I've ever used. It has been slimmed down, so no abundance of ports, the cooling is horrible and it throttles easily and they put the vents on the right side for some reason, so if you use a mouse with it in your right hand, prepare to get your hand cooked.

Definitely the ThinkPad Yoga x380 for me, can be had for sub 200 pounds, quad core processor, nvme drive, up to 16 gigs of ram, thin, light, touch screen and pen enabled. Durable and excellent keyboard too. It's right about the time businesses are selling them off, so they're dirt cheap.

I managed to pick up a T470 (none S variant) for a absolute steal of £160 GBP. Both RAM sticks are swappable and I even managed (with a little trickery) to install Windows 11. Now the T470 has basically no gaming capability at all, but I bought a docking station for it, hooked it to my bedside monitor and use Nvidia game stream. So its a laptop for travel and basically a bedroom terminal for my gaming desktop when I am at home. I absolutely love this little laptop.

Well I did the same thing and bought a Thinkpad T480s in almost new shape with 1 year warranty. I paid USD 253. It has 8 gb ram, 256 gb SSD and a i5-8350U. Going to upgrade it with a 16 gb ram stick to a total of 24 gb. It has perfect Linux support using RHEL 9.

I found a Lenovo SL510 in the e-waste bin of my building. I gave it 8Gb of DDR3 RAM, an SSD and I was able to get *two* replacement batteries from my local Microcenter for less than $50. I put Linux Mint: MATE Edition on it. It's awesome!

I am using this device for couple of days now. one of the reliable device for students and office works. can do most of the works easily and effortlessly... soon willing to buy the x1

ThinkPads are also the only laptops certified for use on the International Space Station!

My x260 is still going strong. I do keep a lookout for a good deal on thinkpads, but in my country they tend to be overpriced nowadays.

Great Video. More people need to know the gospel of used business laptop. My 2013 X220 ist still used by my wife for InDesign, Photoshop and web browsing. I only upgraded the RAM and added an SSD

As a business IT person, we don't sell our old laptops (we do manufacturing so they just get dirty) However I talked to my boss and hand them out to friends and family if they need something and we are tossing a decent one. While we use Dell, we have seen that same exact battery issue happen to laptops once they hit a few years old. Thank you for pointing that out since it can both be an added expense but also a safety one. The hard drive is the same issue, due to our manufacturing restrictions since we make guns, we have to take out all the hard drives after use. All in all, I really liked this video and find myself agreeing about the idea that older isn't obsolete but you need to understand that it comes with some extra precautions when buying

I got a thinkpad t450 for around 60$. Was pleasantly surprised by the quality. I needed to replace the battery, but it was the i7 model with a 1600 x 900 touchscreen. Still works excellent for browsing, basic gaming, and more importantly school/work (port variety is appreciated). Even once Windows 10 support is dropped, I’ll just use Linux instead of the dual boot set up I have currently. Absolutely love this laptop, one of my favorites.

Initially I bought a T460 for college and then I wanted take notes/draw digitally so I ended up switching to a Yoga 7i and I couldn't be happier for only $500 it is easily double the performance of the t460 and still very budget friendly. The only thing I miss is all the nice ports (usb-c isn't bad tho) On the repairability side it's also much nicer because it just uses screws, not easily breakable hard to open plastic tabs

I just got one and honestly if it lasts until ‘25 that would be beyond my wildest dreams. I’m super excited, mine was $220 on cyber Monday.

just got a brand new t470s, for 300AUD. 2 core in 2022 might be rough, but should be fine for what i need .

So I bought a T470 two days ago from Amazon, paid $256.00. Came in like new condition but only had 8GB of ram. I'm not a gamer but I do run multiple applications at the same time. This laptop kicks ass, I have had zero issues and to boot it came with Microsoft office which is a must for me. Can't say too much regarding this refurbished system, not a single scratch. I have already ordered an additional 16GB of ram (total will be 24GB) which I think is all my system needs to provide me with years of service. I'm so happy I also ordered another T470 today. Yes, I'm a value guy. Oh, the battery is in very good condition ran fine for a number of hours, really makes no difference because it's my office computer so it's always plugged in. Sorry for making this comment so long.

Got my T480 few days ago, 150 for a 8350U, unluckily though both internal and external batteries were cooked, so im 210 all in with replacements, still super happy with it, gonna run arch, undervolt, and run it for years to come

Fun fact, these do support windows 11,you just need to switch the tom support from cpu (tpm 1.2)to the embedded controller one with tpm 2.0

Ive used a T470 for work for almost 2 years and have dropped it multiple times its still running strong, since i work in the medical field i do sanitize it with Lysol wipes , reason why some keys like Caps lock and the right and left click dont work anymore, but durability its great! Feels solid i though it cost $1000 but after seeing this video i cant believe its so cheap to buy now lol

I’m writing this on a 4 year old thinkpad x1 carbon 6. Definitely one of the best purchases I’vs made! No hiccups so far.

My favorite laptop I use on the regular is a base edition T400 that runs on either Debian or FreeBSD depending on how I'm feeling. I use it for all of my out of the house computing.

I always recommend thinkpads to people. Lenovo has handily made some of the absolute best machines for durability and longevity in that lineup. I've got a 2016 model and a 2012 model both still putting in work using Linux, and I'm giving their ideapad a shot as well. Their Legion lineup is good for higher end gaming too.

The S in T470S means soldered 😉 The greatest weakness is that it is Dual Core.. Dual Core laptops fell off a cliff in price for good reason. Ryzen x500U pretty much killed them.

Nice! I also have the Thinkpad T470s, and it's amazing, I got it for my mom when it was new release for about a thousand dollars, And now It's so cheap! The one I Got came with A Intel Core i7 6600u, 8GB Dual Channel With A 256GB SSD With Windows 10 Pro.

I have a XPS 15 9550 and it's still running strong. I barely have the need for a laptop but when I do I know I can trust it to do it's job.

I would like to know how these 6-7 gen i5s and i7s compare to the latest Celeron and Pentium Processors from the 12nd and 13th Gen. Because those laptops would be in the similar price range while only having shit build quality.

buy 8th gen i5 or i7 laptops , intel doubled the core count from 2 to 4 when switching from 7th to 8th gen due to competition from amd. so 7th gen i5 i7 laptops have 4c 8t while 7th gen and lesser ones have 2c 4t. there were some very high end high power i7 models in laptops that were quad core but those were like 45w tdp.

I upgraded from a t460s to a t470s mainly for the usb c port, while waiting for framework 16. It is a great notebook, if you are lucky you get 8 gb soldered

Very nice buy, although I find the dual-core CPU (4 threads) on the T470s getting a bit sluggish these days. Great for everyday tasks though (surfing, email, etc...). I have one with Linux installed, but I hardly use it these days as I'm now in love with the AMD U-series CPUs (like the Ryzen 7 5800U etc...).
