I Built a Giant Treetop Rainforest Canopy Vivarium

I created the ultimate tree canopy vivarium, called Orchadia, a world of trees, an extension vivarium to my first giant cloud rainforest vivarium, Pantdora. The whole biological project of executing a canopy habitat was extremely challenging to construct, requiring me to stretch my terrarium-building skills. There were unique obstacles I faced creating this tree layer, which science knows contains the highest concentration of life in the rainforest. I researched, constructed, and even got a tip from a special creature already living within the vivarium. Hope you enjoy this Episode 13, Season 2 of my Ecosystem Vivarium Series. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

Fluted swallowtails would be cool. Any species of Aristolochia Swallowtail would be awesome. However, for the ecologic niche you’re describing, I’d go with the moth butterfly, whose life cycle I find equally as interesting. They predate and take advantage of tree ants nests, if the time is right I could see the potential in this environment but like others said it’s a chance that might not really be worth taking

“Et in Arcadia ego”🌎Greetings, Pantdora creator, and beautiful work. In bonsai, we encourage aerial roots in our banyan ficus three ways: 1) Limiting water to the rootball. 2) Increasing the ambient moisture in the crown/air with a humidifier. 3) The best and most fun - cut a slit up a plastic straw and trim it to fit so as propped between a branch/trunk and the soil. Inside the plastic straw is now a humidity chamber and a root node will activate and grow down the straw into the ground. Once established, we remove the straw. With larger material, any hollow plastic tubing that is pre-sliced will work but you might want to use black or paint it to match the surroundings until a natural root forms. The other methods will have multiple random aerial roots, this method allows for strategic placement of single roots. [I once made a large split-tank vernal pool with mole salamanders for teaching kids about wetlands, keeping the layers of balance is so hard!]

I’ve been following you for longer than I can remember, maybe close to 10 years now, and still, nothing compares to your channel. I’m a big arachnid nerd though, and I would absolutely love to see you do a Monocentropus balfouri colony. The only tarantula that has true communal traits imbedded into their behavior, and on top of that they’re prolific webbers with a beautiful grey/beige and blue coloring. I just feel like a really cool balfouri colony could be right up your alley, and if you did an enclosure for them I know you’d knock it out of the park. Since essentially all spiders and tarantulas are cannibalistic, it’s simply one of the coolest things in the world to me to have a large colony that thrives naturally in a communal setting. Regardless carry on brotha, it’s been a pleasure watching all your videos over the years.

This has probably been said *a lot* on this channel. But Normally this stuff doesn't really interest me, but this is, honestly, *better* than any nature documentary produced by much bigger studios. The storylines make it interesting and the constantly evolving "cast of characters" adds a level of intrigue to each episode making it feel more like a dramedy tv show than a nature documentary. I never thought I'd watch videos like this, let alone subscribe and look forward to the next episode every week. I never thought that when I first followed during the early days of Pantdora that it would evolve to include a 2nd, and possibly multiple other vivariums in the future. I never thought we'd go from simple ants and other various bugs/arachnids to literal mini dragons and dinosaurs. But here we are.

Love the look, but I think the reason you might have been struggling with the design is the balance of open space. On the lower level you have it well "grounded", but in the canopy you filled the lower space; but a canopies' space is more like an umbrella. It should be more top heavy with negative space below to create the sense of a drop or emptiness. Still far better than anything I have ever done.

It reminds us that we need to continue on in this life with such persistence and determination , keep going and trust the process , the process set out for us. 🦋🌈🙏 Excited to see how the creatures will look up and discover and explore what’s beyond Pantdora…Still so much for them to see in the Canopy and new creatures to meet ! ❤….. Orcadia is stunning. I know that science Always talks about the four layers of the forest, but it feels like they overlook the masses of life that thrives under the soil. They always stop at the forest floor, but without the life below the soil what's above is doomed. As an ant-man I think you appreciate that as well.

I really like how you have turned your attention to actual ecosystem function - i.e. ecology. As an ecologist this makes me happy! ❤️ Keep educating people on these mechanisms and if you're ever in doubt about anything don't hesitate to ask me for help. I also really believe that your new found interest in natural conservation is a path you should follow. Your channel is big and growing. This, of course, creates funds for you and your projects. But it could also create funds for an actual fund: The Ants Canada Wildlife Trust 🌿 With this you could help fund important conservation projects not just in the tropics but around the world. You could reach out to someone like Mossy Earth, a great channel and conservation society who focuses on rewilding projects world wide. Just thoughts. Hope it inspires. Cheers from Denmark.

You should STRONGLY consider replacing the English Ivy with Wax Ivy! (Ceropegia). English Ivy completely takes over growing spaces and is impossible to remove once it sinks its roots into trees and walls, you have to rip them out with a lot of force! 😅 The vivarium looks incredible! ❤

EDIT: I am talking about pest control OUTSIDE my home. - Do you want to know how changed I am because of your dedication and work on your channel? I canceled my pest control several months ago as you started to show me the beauty of the creatures that live around my home. I get excited now when I see an ant hill or an orb spider, weaving its magic at night. Sometimes I am still a little freaked out, however, a watch of one of your videos brings me back to the realization that God created these creatures and who am I to destroy? Thank you so much for shining a light on this often unrecognized and misunderstood ecosystem. I am forever thankful!
