I Decided to Sleep for 4 Hours a Day, See What Happened

BRIGHT SIDE

6 жыл бұрын

One of the Bright Side writers decided to adjust his daily routine to leave only 2-4 hours for sleep! Do you ever think about how cool it would be if there were more hours in a day?
You would easily have time for everything: work, hobbies, friends, and family or just lazing around doing nothing at all. But enough dreaming, let's get back to reality. The only way to make it happen is by sleeping less, but would that actually work without turning you into a tired grouch?
TIMESTAMPS
Where did the idea come from? 0:50
Day 1 2:48
Day 2 3:20
Day 3 3:46
Day 4 4:15
Day 5 4:55
Days 6-7 5:41
Days 8-10 6:20
Days 11-14 6:55
Pros of polyphasic sleep 7:30
Cons of polyphasic sleep 8:46
My thoughts after the experiment 9:48
SUMMARY
If your life is like one big to-do list that you just can't seem to keep up with, then polyphasic sleep is probably for you. All jokes aside, I definitely became more productive, and I have a lot of spare time that allows me to do everything I want and even more.
On the other hand, it can be difficult since the whole world is on a completely different regimen. Your friends and family might think it’s weird when you tell them you can't go out with them or ask them to pause a movie so you can take a nap. In any case, it's your choice to make. Just do your homework first, and then go for it!
If this sort of dramatic change isn’t for you, don't worry! There are still lots of things you can do to improve your productivity.

Depending on the day/night and how much I've done...about 4-6 hours of sleep. But I still have lots to do and still can't make it work. I will look into this, 😊 might be a good idea for me to get things done.💖 thank you for sharing.

That's why naps are not supposed to b taken in the place where u sleep at night .. bcoz your brain thinks it's a sleeping time... instead always take naps either at the office chair or desk .. this way u r signaling ur brain that its just a 15 min nap ..u have to wake up n do ur work...n dont create a sleeping environment. .keep something u r going to work on after u wake up..like book ..or laptop etc ... u must have noticed that if u sleep at the office desk .. u wake instantly when u realize what's around u... that's d reason u sleep more in bedroom ... nxt u will also feel slight discomfort when u sleep on desk or chair so when ur time is up u will get up immediately to change ur poster n there u go! That's the time u will b more conscious to control ur brain n body I.e. to wake up! ...naps are meant to relax brain n not body .. always keep alarm .. initially u might dismiss ur alarm n sleep again ..but u wont b able to Sleep much bcoz of the same reason (u told ur brain to take nap n not sleep) ..but with time trust me I have tried it u will c change after few days... .never take naps on bed .. or else u will end up sleeping for hrs because ur body is so relaxed that u dont even move an inch so how will u control ur body to wake up?

I work at the sleep laboratory and I consider this dangerous to put it mildly. First, sleep occurs in cycles with duration about 90-120 minutes, where all the sleep stages are (should be) present: NREM 1 - NREM 2 - NREM3+4 - REM. In healthy sleep their proportion in consequent sleep cycles changes: NREM 3+4 are longest in first cycle and then they get shorter, and REM si longest in the last cycle. Both of these types of sleep have significant effects on health, not only REM sleep. Regulation of sleep is also very complex (see Borbély´s model of sleep regulation) because it depends on sleep pressure (i.e. time spent awake before) and circadian rhytmicity, where external and internal stimuli play role (like darkness inducing melatonin secretion). The two factors should be in synchronicity for onset of sleep. One can fall asleep without on of them, but the sleep is of poorer quality. While the video and comments mention that REM sleep will start sooner in naps, it does not mean that its duration will be sufficient. Also, there is no mention of NREM3-4 sleep that is equally important but for other purposes. This sleeping pattern disrupt normal distribution and possibly amount of healthy/physiological sleep phases. Moreover, both short and prolonged sleep deprivation have been proven to have severe health risks, not only in neurocognitive departement but also on cardiovascular. Just one hour less in sleep in spring time shift was shown to be linked with higher incidence of heart attack. And poor sleep quality with lack of NREM3-4 and REM sleep is one of the factors contributing to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The research of effect of poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation on health is overwhelming. And lastly, I think this is to prioritize social and working aspect of life (productivity, creativity) over indidual health. Even saying things like: ancestors did it such and such... isolated tribe does it like this.... overall REM sleep might be still sufficient ...... this and that person tried it and it feel great. It is remarkably like wishful thinking, like wanting to make excuses to your own body. "Sorry, my body, my heart and brain, that project is really important, and I so want to binge watch entire channel I just discovered on youtube, oh, and I always wanted to read that book. You won´t mind a bit less sleep, right? We´ll find some confirmation of its benefits online, I promise" It is not far above making your whims more important than your health and lying about it to oneself.
@TheMastertbc
@TheMastertbc 6 жыл бұрын
IMO the only benefit is that it boosts your creativitiy since your brain is still half dreaming while awake but it is dangerous for your health on the long run. Probably the reason why geniuses die young. It also increases chance for depression

When I am sleep-deprived I try to take daytime naps, and I set an alarm for 20 minutes *or less* IN ORDER TO NOT fall into "deep" sleep. Every time I have set it to 25 minutes or more, when I wake up I feel really groggy -- sometimes for hours afterwards. But not after the 10-20 minute naps, which are truly refreshing.

Ludovic, I think you are responding to another comment I posted, not this one. (If I'm wrong, please explain how your response is relevant to my comment above.) You say it is not possible to take 90 minutes to get into REM. I never said it did. I said that, according to Wikipedia, it takes about 70 minutes. Leaving 20 minutes of the sleep cycle for REM. "Plus quick REM is something the body can achieve when sleep deprived." Citation, please? Even if this is true, this sounds like a horrible way to treat your body.

+Erfansvideos as a person that follows this sleep pattern I can tell you that sleeping for more than 4 hours a day (ESPECIALLY in one long chunk) is overkill and can actually lead to being more tired and needing to use things like coffee and soda. I get a total of 2-3 hours of sleep a day and since I changed i've lost weight, got fit, my mental state improved, my work has gotten better, and overall I have noticed no drawbacks other than social norms.

actually we evolved like this. it's not until the 19th-20th centuries that we started sleeping full 8 hours. used to be people sleep 4 hours go do something (even go out for a few hours midnight) and come back for another 3-4 hours. if we go even further back in time before civilization man really never slept long as you had to be alert for predators. so it's actually more normal to sleep short stretches.

I've been working 3rd for the past month with only 4hrs of sleep without any naps. The first week I felt like a zombie and would space out, I now feel relatively fine and awake. Until your body gets used to it, you're chances of hurting yourself or others goes through the roof.

RenegadeGaming right. I remember my first day of school I did thrid shift and only got 3 hours of sleep, and felt I was barely functioning. After getting 3-4 hours of sleep though for a few months as the semester progressed, I actually felt perfectly normal off of 3 hours. I did this for 2 years while working graveyard and going to school. Its not worth it, to do it just for the sake of doing it. You gain weight (I was going to boxing classes at the time too) if you're not extremely careful. You become cranky and angry with everyone. I personally began feeling chest pain and started to lose my hair. I feel like I aged rapidly compared to my peers. I switched to afternoon shift last year and its the best decision I ever made. I sleep at least 6 hours every night now and I feel like a brand new person. Experiments are cool, but sleep is better.

I have a male friend who slept like that since his teen days. Now that he has hit 30, whenever people see him, they thought he is at least 45! Premature aging, bad skin, weight gain (fatty liver).....you name it, he has it. It's definitely not worth trading 3-4 hours of sleep for premature aging which cannot be reverted.

I've slept ~5 hours every night for about 12 years now. I usually aim for 5.5 hours, but most often it's around 5. I don't take naps or anything, because it just makes me feel tired. I've tried sleeping more in the weekends, but I usually wake up without alarm clocks after ~6 hours of sleep and if i ever sleep more than 6.5 hours, i'm just extremely tired and don't feel like doing anything at all. Usually I also get sleep paralysis for oversleeping. I'm rarely sick. I'm sick like once every 2 years or something. It's all about what you're used to. Sleeping isn't the same for everyone and how much you sleep doesn't matter. The time you're awake matters. What's your productivity. There's no point in trying to lower your sleep amount to 5 hours if you'll just stare at a wall like a zombie for 15 hours of the day or if you waste those extra hours watching 4 more episodes of your favorite TV show. Do it only if you NEED those extra hours for something like exercising or work or studying (But remember that you shouldn't be tired when studying or working if you want to learn something since it affects your brains).

Ummm, i want to add to this, when you sleep less and you want to be fully rested, you need to be consistent on when you sleep. For instance, sleep 1am and wake up a 5am everyday, dont change that at all... and find a time to take a nap somewhere during the day. maybe after work or before work, depending on your schedule, like 11am- 11:30 only everyday:30 only everyday. This is where you start to see the results in improving after a week or 2. You can't have like same amount of sleep but always changing when you sleep, it will never work, ever.

REM adjusts. The less sleep you get, the sooner REM kicks in during your sleep periods. I can take a 30 minute nap and have a 3 day long dream, complete with a huge cast of characters and decent plot. T. Edison worked 24/7/365. He would fall asleep at his work bench for 5-10 minutes a few times a day, and that's all the sleep he ever got. He lived to 84 at a time when life expectancy for a male was like 62.

This doesn't work if you need to do ANY kind of physical activity more than just sitting in a chair all day. I sometimes find myself awake for 36 hours at a time if I have a bit too much coffee or if I stay awake past the time I would normally go to sleep and then I become less sleepy again. But I always have to pay for it afterward with a 12 hour sleep or so to catch up.

I can do well with just 4 hours of sleep. I run well on little sleep. And if I continue to do it in a row, I feel tired the first night and once I get past the rough part of the night and just push through it, I feel more awake and then get a really deep 4 hours(I will wake up naturally with no alarm), and be fine for the day and then I dont feel as tired that next night coz I gotten used to it. But I also love to sleep, so even tho I may wake up and feel fine, the bed is so comfy and I go back to sleep(coz I hate mornings anyway). and then WAY oversleep. But then it starts over my sleep schedule back to a normal 6-7 hours. 4 hours tho. Pretty easy if I end up doing it. I get more inspired at night, so even if I get tired my inspirations give me energy to do it, and my body adjusts to it.
