Travels With Geordie

Күн бұрын

I thought it might be interesting to document a little design and building project I did. A nice timber carport I designed and built with the help of my good friend Matt.
Every week I'll also introduce a beer of the week, sharing some of my favorite, and not so favorite beers.
Travels With Geordie T shirts!
I've set up an online store where you can pick up the Travels With Geordie T shirt in all sizes, even toddlers!

Travels With Geordie. A weekly video series about wooden boat restoration and liveaboard life for Peter Knowles and his dog, Geordie.
My day job is design and 3D visualization of custom homes.
If you're interested,...bit.ly/2AGi1wH
Some viewers may be interested in some previous videos about Land Rovers. They're at my previous channel, Riverport Rovers.
bit.ly/2Bm7IOW
Here is the build series about my truck. A rather modified Series II Land Rover.
bit.ly/2ziYQbv
I rather silly build and road trip to the famous Land Rover Winter Romp in Maine.
bit.ly/2zjtPUW
A slightly less silly road trip to Cape Breton that does involve painting flames on a Land Rover.
bit.ly/2KlEKBx
The series that started it all. A crazy plan to build a Land Rover in one day from assorted bits lying around.
bit.ly/2Qa9rPD
There's a few other videos that might be of interest at Riverport Rovers including the beginning of a Boler trailer refit.

Great Job to you Peter and your team... You guys made it look easy. I built one at my cabin and I picked up a few new techniques from your build in the event I build another one. Whether it's restoring a boat, building a structure, or rehabbing a trailer, working with your hands is always a good thing. Thanks for the videos.

Peter, this is for me, one of those videos I have too, watch, watch and watch again. I can use my imagination to see what you see, the smell of fresh timers, boards, perhaps even the tools in my hand including the vibration in arm, that feel of power & when the tool loads and struggles. Growing up on a Midwest farm, we built many things. Bridge planks recycled, using a horse-shoe magnet over every in for 12 inch nails, rail road cross-ties cut, notched and chiseled flat as finished with the block plane. Those memories allowed me to experience and live your project. People say “Stop and Smell the Roses”, but I disagree as the lumber-timber and the aroma after a large cut. My wife of 40 yrs, just said two days ago “Let’s build a car port”, although I had been thinking “Car Port” for weeks prior! Perhaps I invaded her seams but you Peter, have giving the energy. My mind will be elsewhere regardless of the fast at hand. I will sleep with a smile. In Nebraska, our footings are 4 foot deep. I saw the tar paper/water proofing material although I am not sure about the hole and bolt. I think a bar of steel (1/4” X 1”) the width of the timber thru a narrow mortise then a hole & nut. Got to think more, code dictates a lot. Absolutely excellent design, execution, tool usage, equipment use and the star of the show, the timbers. Really enjoyed the video, clearly spoken and you smile that screams “Hey, it’s work, but I am enjoying it” “Where’s my brew”? Construction, fabricating and finished. Something you can say, I helped built that! Retired auto tech, all brands, all repairs. Thank you!

@@CobyMcConnell I made a set for my project and used 2x10 with threaded rods. I made two holes in each board 1/4" (on-center) less than the dimension of my 8x8 green post. Both holes were place about an inch away from the edge of the 2x10 at opposite edges. You do have to be careful because SOMETIMEs, the clamp hits a sweet-spot and it slips down if there's no weight on it. Under load, they worked great!

Beautiful work Peter! I am in the middle of convincing my husband into an exposed rafter roof for our pool pergola and I'm definitely going to show him your video. Can you give me an idea how much more it is to go tongue and grove vs plywood? Thanks so much!
