Travels With Geordie

5 жыл бұрын

This week I carry on with the ongoing wooden boat restoration of my friends boat MV Zephyrus. Building and installing some panels to house the AC plugs as well as DC USB plugs.
Every week I'll also introduce a beer of the week, sharing some of my favorite, and not so favorite beers.
Travels With Geordie T shirts!
I've set up an online store where you can pick up the Travels With Geordie T shirt in all sizes, even toddlers!

Travels With Geordie. A weekly video series about wooden boat restoration and liveaboard life for Peter Knowles and his dog, Geordie.

Having read the comments and being an electrician for 38 years, I thought I would add another comment. Put 10 electricians in a room and let one do the work, what will all the others have in common? They wouldn't have done it that way... Keep up the good work, cheers.

True! How many way 2 Skin a Cat ? Thanks Peter , Bravo ! My Curiosity after 30 years in the electronic/electrical field ,has to do with Uninterrupted Power supply. After over 30 yr as a recreational enthusiasts, in on marine environments, raised on Lake Michigan ~proper. Admired many Christ craft, of various size,vintage. Have owned fiberglass, small boats and PWC, typically called Jet Ski,, You know. Essentially My question or future episode is Your synopsis of saltwater battery, and storage of DC potential, in a marine environment. Lead acid batteries are what I'm familiar with, and trained in through THE USN, OUR technology was essentially Korean war era tech, and logic, while going to school in the early 90's. My Rate was GSE. gas systems electrical=turbine mechanics .. Okay sorry so long. Great Channel, request that You address backup power, I do remember seeing a small Honda geni? Thanks again !

It is easy to play Monday morning quarterback so here I go. Around my house and garage when I want a superior 120v receptacle I use hospital or industrial grade receptacles. They have superior connections and full contact internal parts that wipe a significant portion of the inserted plug blades and superior plug/cord retention (nurses don't like it when the IV machine becomes unplugged). They also have superior cost, and longer lifespan. As for the ground issues, take the in and out ground wires along with a pig tail, twist them together and crimp the twist with a ferrule,connect the pigtail to the receptacle and Bobs your Uncle.

Always great to watch your techniques and how straightforward they are how nice of a finished look they have when done. Boat yard would charge a mint to do the same work but by doing it yourself, you know exactly what was done and how you did it. Especially when you may have to go back in to fix or replace it. Great job as always Peter.

I use plugs with the back hole on stranded wire that CLAMPs the wire using the side screws. So the little holes then work fine with stranded wire. The side screws have an interior clamping setup to the little holes. Lowes sells those outlets pretty cheap too. They are a better quality all around. I also have wrung out the little screws and almost always they are ok after. And yes done the ring idea as you did on ground. On some electric outlets that are hidden or simply metal boxes to connect 3 or 4 wires together as junction boxes, I have used copper clamping crimps to secure 3 or 4 stranded wires together, then heat shrink for insulation. I do usually spray [paint with grey primer or something those metal boxes to prevent rusting.

You can get outlets with 'clamp' connections, where you insert the wire in a hole then when you tighten the screw it pulls a clamp plate against the wire. If you already have a non-clamp outlet, just 'tin' the end of the wire and bend it around the screw. (Retired electrician)...

A GPS receives up to 12 satellite signals at a time. Then calculates or triangulates constantly in order to give you a moving image on a map. Uses a lot of power. Most hand helds would go threw a set of double AA's in 8 hours. GPS units are big calculators working all the time when on.

Good video Peter, on the outlets, they make 120v ac outlets with dual voltage USB plugs in them they make a clean install and good back fit for a standard outlet hole. The 120v box why not use the ones with flip out wings that lock the box in place ? ... Yes they Marine USB plug but they're not much better than non- Marine
@TravelsWithGeordie
@TravelsWithGeordie 5 жыл бұрын
All good points Tony. The thing with the USB in duplex outlets is that they run off the 120 volt circuit. I wanted to have the USB on the 12 volt circuit for when we're not on shore power. The boat does have an excellent inverter but it just seems wrong to make 120 from 12 to turn it back to 5.5. The duplex in the cockpit will have a cover, I don't see the need indoors.

This video was informative. I have a boat with AC outlets, but I currently can only get shore power, and I'd like to power my fridge, air conditioner, etc away from shore. The boat also has a "cigarette lighter." Can you recommend something for me to accomplish this? Thanks
@TravelsWithGeordie
@TravelsWithGeordie 4 жыл бұрын
That's a huge topic. Firstly you will need a large battery bank, the more the better, then a way to charge the batteries, on the dock you can charge from a shore power charger but when cruising that's not an option. The engine will charge you batteries but only while running and you may not be underway often enough. Lastly you could charge via solar or wind power. Now you need to convert the stored power from 12 volts DC to 110 volts AC via an inverter. One large enough to serve your maximum loads. Now for your loads, AC is extremely power hungry and would only be possible with a huge system. A fridge will draw less than 10 amps with a 20% duty cycle, which is possible with a reasonable sized system. All in all it's a significant undertaking, Google is your friend.

Shouldn't GFI plugs be used on a boat? I know they are a bit more costly but they are WAY safer when working near water.

How about soldering the end of the stranded wire. Have been doing that for years. I've also pulled the insulation tube off of crimp connectors, slid some suitable sized heat shrink tube onto the wire, install the crimp connector, crimp and solder the connector onto the wire then slide the heat shrink tubing back over the end of the connector and shrink it. Even doubling up on the heat shrink tubing has worked wonders for a long lasting, vibration resistant connection. Then you can even add a tad of dialectic grease when making your connection to prevent later humidity stimulated dissimilar metal activity.

Soldering a connector creates a hard point that can break due to vibration. Consequently soldering is frowned on in the recreational marine world.

@@todddunn945 It's also frowned on in planes and VAG (VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Skoda, Seat and possibly others) specifically says to never solder connectors in their factory service manuals. IRC, I once read a test of crimp connectors (in an aviation magazine) and good quality crimps & crimpers actually create a type of cold weld that is far better than a solder joint....

Let's not forget motorcycles too. I've been building choppers for over 30 years now (see my avatar?) Crimps are the only way to go now, as I too used to solder my connections. No Bueno!

I figure that screw and clamp style AC outlets will work well for stranded wire (see the outlet in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKeFjZd6ycC6qGw.html ). There is a lot more surface area on the clamps instead of the just a screw and the clamps are serrated so that the strands won't pull out as easily when compared to the bottom of a screw head. Amazing video by the way! I'm using this info for wiring up my camper van - very similar considerations as marine circuits.

Geordie - What kind of life span were you expecting from a 99 cent outlet? You get what you pay for! I only use hospital grade 20 amp outlets; www.ul.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/ul_HospitalGradeReceptacles.pdf Since I value my time I pay a little more but I know I will never have to touch them again! If nothing else at least use this type of outlet where there exists the possibility of a 1000+ watt load being used.

Hi Peter, I think that's very wise. We have a budget issue and couldn't justify premium receptacles initially. We hope to replace them in time.
@bigunone
@bigunone 5 жыл бұрын
Why not just pigtail your wires before connecting to the receptacles? It is a better connection and if one receptacle has a failure the rest in the circuit still work. I would have just run plug mold to the underside of the rail they make it now with USB ports.
