June 19 was officially designated as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The international awareness day is observed annually with the goal to increase public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers.
This year’s global theme was “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Care Globally.” A medical doctor shared some tips for sickle cell warriors and how they can manage their lifestyles.

Genetic counseling is the first step and it should start in high school or as early as possible. Couples who have sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease may marry provided they do not plan to attempt conception naturally. They should plan lifelong contraception and consider invitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic testing for genotype selection to avoid the risk of giving birth to sicklers. It is an expensive option and so they will have to make a choice whether or not they want children in the marriage and how they plan to approach this goal. In marriage love is not enough. You need to ask the difficult questions during courtship and be truthful to each other.
