When this was first announced, I didn't realize it was a Saw movie and was thinking it would be an American take on the Spiral idea, with Chris Rock and Samuel L Jackson. Which intrigued me. Not that I thought it would be good, American "takes" on Japanese properties generally tend to just be cashing in on trends, but anyone attempting to tackle a Junji Ito manga has at least a little of my respect. (And, yeah, I'm still not over P.T. Show me a Silent Hill fan that wasn't excited about Junji Ito being part of a SH project.) Then partway through the trailer, it hit me that it was just another Saw movie, and I promptly lost interest... XDDD

i feel like the concept of “a saw copy cat targeting cops” could have been interesting. while i was watching ur vid i was thinking it could be interesting if the twist was the copy cat was also a cop trying to get even more funding for cops by making their jobs seem more dangerous than they are, and all his targets are the good cops as a way of rooting out the people trying to change the system from the inside. ah well, acab. I was definitely also thinking it was blue line-y. to me it felt like a movie that was trying to impart "those anti-police people may be right, there are bad cops, BUT those people are so extreme they would back cold-blooded serial killers because of that 😳" or something to that tune. "your idea has merit but it's too extreme" kind of dismissal. they also had that scene when chris rock and the other guy were going to investigate the subway murder and chris rock's character was listing off all the hazards of being a cop, including high suicide rates, high divorce rates, and *high domestic abuse rates*. like.. the rates at which cops abuse their families. but it was phrased as if this is something in which cops are the victims like huh??? excuse me?? i couldn't really be surprised because most cop media I've seen handles the problem of cops killing innocents and this whole system of violence in the same way--a problem of individual cops (but the rest are good and the profession is good).

right like that line seemed to imply either cops jobs are SO HARD they HAVE to abuse their partners (which is fucked up and victim blaming) or that cops are more likely to be abused BY their partners (which is completely false). i'm hoping whoever wrote that just jammed it in without thinking because they saw a Google result about cops and domestic violence because if that was a conscious decision that's fucked. I don’t really understand this reading of saying the police were good but had a few bad apples tbh as imo Spiral proposed the exact opposite reading. In other words, Chris Rock’s character was the ONLY good cop in an otherwise universally bad police department. Spiral wasn’t a story of bad apples ruining a good system, it was a story of there only being a single good member left of what was otherwise an entirely bad system. This was reflected by the fact that even Samuel L Jackson and Marisol Nichols’ characters were initially set up to be heroes of the policing community only to later be revealed as being complicit in the police department’s corruption, leaving Chris Rock as the only cop worth saving... hence why Spiral even offered him the chance to work with him.

It feels like the film is yelling about bad apples the whole time, but can't make its mind up on whether it meants "it's just a few bad apples really most police are ok" and "a few bad apples spoils the lot" which is likely due to the fact they wanted this film to sell and not really offend anyone. The traps do suck tho, but in a way that feels honest. They have no intention of any escape being possible because like every other saw trap ever minus a few exceptions, the goal isn't to see someone heroicly escape from their shackles bloodied and beaten, it's to see someones head explode because they didn't remove all their organs onto a collection plate with a rusty spoon to symbolize how they didn't help an old lady cross the road one time. The traps are just elaborate mulching machines, and at least this one doesn't give anyone a chance before mulching them - though obviously I'd be so much more interested in a Saw film where people escaped the traps and beat the killer in the end via teamwork...

I can't help but, when a movie tries to lean into Thin Blue Line / 'police as a different class of people' stuff, all I can think about any more is that 'Killology' / Dave Grossman guy who views police as a different class, not because of any risk posed to them, but because he sees policing as a calling in which you must actively will to kill other people who you deem lesser, in order to protect other people (who you also see as lesser). I guess they tried something neat but they're still waving around the gateway drug, y'know?

The movie itself completely destroyed the message by it's fumbling, but I think the Spiral killer gave the cops the illusion of breaking free off the trap because it's a metaphor for how cops pretend to give the people they kill the opinion of avoiding death then kill them anyway. Like how those two police gave conflicting orders then shot, afterwards saying that the person could have just followed their orders like as if they weren't conflicting. You know when they don't just kill the person without any pretending to be fair.

The Saw franchise is many things; Bloody, Confusing, Dramatic, Suspenseful, Campy, and Occasionally Inconsistent. However, if my experience in the Saw fandom has taught me anything, it’s that the series has one major thing going for it that has caused it to become beloved in many people’s hearts: Iconic Characters. In the first movie we have Adam who, although we don’t get to know him for long, has such a strong character that he is one of the top favourite characters in the eyes of many fans. There’s also Amanda, John, and Lawrence who return in the sequels causing them to become more fleshed out characters that you want to see more of. Hoffman, Strahm, Kerry, Éric Matthews, Riggs are among the recurring characters that are added on and though they are all police, they’re very distinct. They’re all their own individuals. Adam’s sarcastic and dramatic; Lawrence is cold, smart, and Jigsaw’s greatest asset; Amanda struggles with her mental health a lot and is unhealthily attached to John; John is self-righteous with a god complex, believing his morals are intrinsically correct; Hoffman is sadistic and manipulative; Strahm and Kerry are like the only people who could see through Hoffman’s BS; Eric Matthews is a corrupt cop who plants evidence and engages in police brutality; Riggs tries too hard to save everyone to his own detriment. I could go on and on for hours but you get the gist. What does Spiral have? I feel like every character falls under good cop, bad cop, or cop apologist. What the heck. Literally where’s the flavor?! I want my OG Saw dads Leigh Whannell and James Wan back :(

At first after reading this I was gonna say “iconic characters? Really?!” Then I remember how invested I am in Amanda’s story and how happy I was when they brought Dr. Gordon back and I had to pipe down. You’re right. The plotting is often absurd but the character work is on point.

I think another somewhat solid answer in my mind for 10:39 would be that the Spiral Killer wants these cops to believe they have a hope of living to some extent only to be faced with pretty much the harsh reality that they can’t actually do the task. I haven’t seen the movie but I’m going to presume most of the cops get killed off in a similar fashion of having an almost unwinabble task to complete. The bigger reason the Spiral killer would even do that may be due to just a sick and twisted sense of justice, which could make some sense of message overall, not a good one, but it would make something

Idk Spiral is pretty good with gunslinger or royal guard. Its shots are slow but if you shoot then block with rg the style meter can rise no problem, same if you use gunslinger. Its neutral gunslinger move is also good for juggling, kinda like Artemis but you dont have to charge it. Its also the best option for dealing with Wraths, cause even on DMD it only takes like 2 shots from a long distance to take them out safely. Anyway I just think that theres more meaningful discussion to have about a gun from DMC3 than the movie that shares the same name.

I do agree that it kind of ruins the point to have them be unwinnable, but I mean with Amanda in the 3rd, the original jigsaw was upset that Amanda had been creating unwinnable traps, so it's not the first time the series has done that thing. That's also why I only watched the first 2 Saw movies because as soon as I got to that part in 3, I stopped with the series.

Just saw Spiral last night and I knew something felt weird about this film and the whole 'a few bad apples' conversation it was trying to have, and I think you summed it up really well. I love your commentary and reviews, I knew you'd have a great take on this film and you never disappoint.

Darren just did the Saw sequels to get to make Repo, and it kinda shows. I mostly only stick it out through the Saw films for the creative kills, ngl.

18:00 Would I get the greater point of this scene from Part 6 if I could understand what the guy's screaming? Something about an apology? Was that basically a bit Russian Roulette set-up?

oh, this scene fucks. so. the character that's making a choice is a health insurance executive who screwed jigsaw over and wouldn't back paying for his brain cancer. the guys on the carousel are the employees from the exec's company who look for the most minimal shit to try and cancel or preemptively terminate people's contracts so they can get out of covering them. thanks to their work, two thirds of all claims were denied by the company. so jigsaw tied them all to a carousel and had a shotgun mounted to fire six shots. their boss could press a button to make the shotgun not fire, but only twice, thus only saving one third of his employees. oh, and when he presses the button his hand is skewered with a massive metal pin. it's honestly one of the few traps that i'm like actually sure, this is good shit

doubt you're gonna see this but just in case: did you watch the movie jigsaw? i just finished it for the first time and i have SO MANY QUESTIONS so i ran back to this video right after to see if you mentioned it at all here, but no dice. if you do end up making a video or videos on the saw series please please include it, because i'm dying to know what you think of that plot holey mess. (i mean seriously, what the hell was that ending?? how did he know it would all work out the way he needed? how is he gonna explain the end result? keeping it deliberately vague to avoid spoiling in case you really haven't seen it, but just....what????)

Hi I'm back after finally watching Spiral and wowee, it was somethin lol. They were def trying to make a profound statement without being too "radical" which just... shit or get off the pot, ya know? Also Saw VI is my favorite in the series, there are some really great performances and the traps are iconic, plus there's an actually compelling narrative. I'd be super interested in hearing your thoughts on the series as a whole!

Interestingly cops do brutalize black cops. I read a court case in law school where a high speed car chase led to the police catching up to one of their own police cars, dragging the police officer out and beating him. The question in the case was whether, if he had been the suspect, it would have been okay to beat him, and they decided basically yes, that at the end of a chase the suspect will be beaten even if he's subdued because all the officers have so much addrenaline.
