Also the blood of christ part killed me because how the fuck would they have gotten the blood. 1. They just went to jesus and were like "yo give us some blood in case demons come to earth" and hes like "shidd alright". 2. They went in and milked him for blood when he was in his tomb but they couldnt move the stone away so how. Or 3. They got the blood after he finished dying but his body went back up to heaven with him. Or lastly 4. Its actually wine since "wine is the blood of christ". Its too crazy

Howling 2 had a great scene where Professor Badass(can't remember his name) just pulls out all this holy gear including the actual Holy Grail as if he got it from a local thriftshop. A lot of the time people are just in it for the money.

Soviets bombed the church and then Hitler drove his car too fast past the church, splashing mud onto the front doors, and then the demons were set free because the carvings were defiled or something. There, we even have a way for the protagonist to imprison them again. Likely using a bandsaw/etc that their child was carrying around like all the weird children do in this kind of film.

@hyper-thermal5 жыл бұрын
I can appreciate you wanting to look at this move without the framework of how cynically manipulative it is, but for me at least, it's honestly impossible. The ad campaign is completely abhorrent, initially by having really short, unskippable ads that trick you into thinking there's something wrong with the video, and then forcing in a loud as hell jumpscare. These would show up before or during possibly any video, even including videos intended for relaxation, or for children. And of course, after the backlash, they issued even more disgusting ads that say "haha the original ads were too scary" even though they weren't scary, they were just needlessly startling. And of course, there were all of the bootlickers who would whinge about "ohhhh sensitive little snowflakes can't handle a scary ad." I'm really, really sorry. I hate this movie, I hate what it stands for, and I hate how it tried to force itself into the spotlight. I personally don't think any money should be given to this.

Wasn't there an unnecessary amount of jumpscares in the previous movies as well? I remember the sudden loud noises was a reason I hated the first one.
@paultasciotti25 жыл бұрын
You're right. I really don't mind the loud noises if used correctly. It seems that film makers may sometimes rely too much on the sudden "Boo!", rather than building suspense. I think it takes more effort and dare I say more talent to build suspense and hold an audience. Please understand that I have no idea what I'm talking about and this is merely the opinion of a not so smart individual. :)
@peanutbutterpikachu5 жыл бұрын
Paul2 a good jumpscare actually stays in your mind. A good jumpscare is also something you can't unsee. Everytime I've been jumped, I unsaw it or was completely jaded to it. For a good jumpscare, let's look at hereditary. Spoilers ahead, but there's this one scene where it starts off with a shot at the son in his bed after driving his sister home and beheading her accidentally due to some pretty odd causes. There's no real buildup to it either as this one shakes it up a bit. You then hear his mother deadass bawling in genuine fear and sadness, just like when I saw a dead animal of my own one time and yes I'm being real chief. Suddenly there's a shot to the head of the sister who was beheaded, being eaten up by bugs and also in broad daylight and vibrant imagery. On top of that there's a light contrast that assaults your eyes real quick while you're forced to not only be jumped but to have that explicitly disgusting imagery latch onto your brain and burrow into it like a tick, making you unable to stomach food as you'll be chronically puking for the next TWO MONTHS. I felt that.

I knew not to expect a masterpiece by any means, but they missed out on an amazing opportunity. the story is set in Romania, in a castle that was turned into a convent. they could have put Dracula in the story! hes a public commons character now! they could've had him summoning the demon to get the neat vampire powers! and then the shenanigans could have ensued! it would've made it just a bit less sucky in my opinion. they had a prime opportunity and didn't take it.

I was hoping you'd talk about this one! There are so many reviews just saying "it's typical don't see it" but I was really hoping for some deeper exploration, because I for one have a personal essay in my head about how I feel about this movie. I had mixed feelings about the Nun but they sort of all rest under general disappointment. I know a lot of horror fans kind of dismiss the Conjuring movies as being not scary, and I guess whatever, maybe I'm just an uncultured normie but to be mainstream horror movies I think they're really great. Most of my disappointment with this movie actually stems from the fact that the nun/ Valak (Valek? Idk not looking it up) from the Conjuring 2 is actually the scariest horror villain I personally have ever experienced. I saw the movie when it came out two years ago and it didn't really impress me THAT much at first, but a few months later I started having nightmares about the nun. The imagery sort of gradually invaded my dreams and I got to the point where I couldn't even look at still images of her because I found her so frightening. And I can't help but think that that had so much to do with how functional Conjuring 2 is as a movie. The makeup for the nun in that movie is different; the contrast between the black and the white on Valak's face is stark, and it looks like it's caked on her face. She stands there and she looks uncomfortable and strange, like so out of place it hurts. And emphasis on the fact of her just standing there. In the Conjuring 2 she as a character has a very passive role; the famous hallway scene is an example. She stands there and lures people to her, and even when she attacks she does so from behind a painting--everything is indirect. Even during the climax of that movie, she just stands in the corner, clearly in control of what's going on but just not very physical or hands-on. This works so well for the very reason you mentioned about human emotion. The nun at her best is an allegory for dread or fear. It is powerful and frightening, but that power is subtle and has to act through a lot of different channels. Incidentally, that's why the two most effective sequences in THIS movie (imo) where at the beginning when Valak walks down the hall after the normal nun hangs herself, and when Valak (slowly) chases the psychic nun down the hall. The former sequence got me all pumped for the film before kind of letting me down, and the latter worked to establish Valak's presence in the eyes of our protagonist. The action is slow, creeping, and deliberate, and plays beautifully to the nun's character as it was established in the previous movie. For these same reasons the climax of this movie felt lacking, because the nun has such an active role in the shenanigans that that mystery about her is completely deflated. But anyway thanks again for actually talking about this movie! I'm glad there are people who are willing to be thoughtful about stuff like this :)
@Hannabi985 жыл бұрын
The make up really bothered me. In this movie it looked blue like something from an old zombie movie and the faces it makes are derpy and funny not scary at all. I understand your point. In Conjouring 2 Valak worked well because a demonic nun in a family home is just so out of space it doesn't belong and it's unsettling plus scary paintings being alive and trying to kill their creators or owners were always an intresting concept for me. But I was afraid that if they do a whole movie around the concept of a scary nun it's going to get boring unscary repetative or even funny. And unfortunatly I was right.

The first Conjuring movie is the best of them all.

One day I just know you'll do an entire video in jumpscares just to see how silly it can go :P

I got so excited when I saw the notification for this video. I seriously love your reviews and your optimistic view even on bad movies especially if you talk about a movie that I also watched. I went to see it with my friend. It was really bad. We laughed our ass off and the guy who was sitting on my left side also made jokes with his own friends. This would be good if this movie would be a horror parody. But it's not. You supposed to take this seriously. Valak's design is garbage. Everytime we see the demon's face upclose it looks like something from a bad 70' s horror. Half of the movie is just the tree main characters walking after stuff that they shouldn't follow, while you grunt in your seat at the stupidity, and a bunch of jumpscares that you can see coming from miles away. There are a couple things that I liked however. The actors are great the athmosphere is really cold and creepy there are several twists at the end and there are a couple of chilly moments but if you watch a lot of horror movies this has nothing new to give you. But I think the only movie that was weaker than this from the Conjouring related movies was Annabell so this is the second worst. Of course it's only my opinion nothing to take too seriously. If someone want to watch this that's okay but don't wait for it to be a horror classic.

Oh also the spitting scene at the end was the most hilarious thing I've seen in years. Valak the prince of hell and snakes or whatever the big bad of the movie gets almost defeated by spit.

English isn't my first language but "and the movie commits to this decision" [12:15] is simply fantastic, absolutely hilarious. Thank you!

When I left this movie I knew very clearly that my depression had taken me to the point of almost full dullness of my senses. I was really hoping it would be a journey into the subconscious on some level but it turned out to be a bland Evil Dead style movie that had nothing to say for some reason (is sad.)

Who would win: 1 evil nun with snakey hell powers with undead nun army or 1 good nun with a mouth full of jesus' blood?

If you're ever in Las Vegas, you HAVE to go to Zak Bagans haunted museum. It's seriously an experience, I've never been to a place like that before and I've been to a few haunted places. I highly recommend it.

My most surprising thing about the movie was how un-scary it was.
