ScarJo’s performance was so good in this. I usually don’t like kid actors but this is the exception to the rule, Roman really did an exceptional job here

His father didn't run away. He was fighting in the resistance, which probably would have been seen as worse; therefore, the 'fighting in Italy' cover story. JoJo was brave to try to save that rabbit. Going against a crowd of bullies takes a lot more courage than to just do what they want, when it feels wrong to you. The Rosie character: yeah, she actually handles her arguments with JoJo beautifully. She openly expresses her disagreement and thoughts with JoJo while still loving him unconditionally and not constantly badgering and berating him. He gets a chance to come to his own mind about things. She knows he has a kind heart. She also leads by example of decency and kindness, instilling those qualities in him without him knowing it. In those days, though, despite Rose's distaste for nazi ethnic cleansing theories and disagreement with Hitler's war of aggression, she knows that, yes, the best way to protect her son was to allow him to participate in the youth camps. To have been the only kid on the block not a part of it would have left him vulnerable to even more abuse than he got at camp, and might also blow Rose and her husband's cover. Resistance fighters worked from pretty much from off the grid, often living in the forests. My grandmother's cousin escaped a transport and made it to a forest somewhere in the France/Germany area. He lived there through the rest of the war and it was not unusual to come across bands of resistors from all different countries.

That was my feeling too and I was hoping we’d get confirmation of that in the end but I also don’t think we needed it. And yes, Jojo trying to save that rabbit showed his true character.

Metal collection was real. During the war, we (the U.S.) also collected and recycled all kinds of materials to be used for weapons and supplies. Paper, nylon and scrap metal were extremely valuable and hard to get, as were many medications and food items.

You will undoubtedly receive some comments stating that captain K brought Rosie's bike home (when the Gestapo men were there). It is a popular, but utterly wrong theory, debunked by Taika himself, and pretty obviously so, if you just look at the bikes (Rosie's is a "lady style" bike). No, good captain just found out she was hanged and hurried to see if he can help her son, on his own bike. And yes, Sam Rockwell confirmed he played captain K as gay.

This was my feeling too. He seemed to be there to help as much as he could. Great acting by Sam Rockwell 👏

Not that it is crucial to the plot but why and how did Capt K's "partner" come with him to the house. And if it was Cap K's bike, why bring it into the house? And his partner didn't bring his bike into the house? Hmmm. Perfect movie, why do I do this?
@migmit

@@Vince-lq3ve Bring the bike, so that it won't be stolen. Finkel probably met the captain somewhere along the way. Or maybe he did have a bike, but also a bike chain. Or anything; his presense actually makes things funnier, so, who cares.

@@migmit True, meaningless detail. Just a bit of fun deciphering the detail. It's such an incredibly smart movie that when something doesn't quite make sense it compels one to figure it out.

What an amazing movie, I had the privilege to go to the first screening of it in the UK, and yeah, you could hear a pin drop at the shoe reveal. Taika Watiti is one of my favourite directors, I'd highly recommend Hunt for the Wilderpeople too if you haven't seen it P.S. RG if you're reading the comments is this the RG I know too?

I absolutely adore this movie, it's been my absolute favourite since I caught it in the cinema way back in 2019. It absolutely wrecked me emotionally, tore my heart out and then stuck it back in with spit and gum, but I couldn't be more grateful for it 😅 Truly a movie I think everyone should watch, it walks the line between comedy and tragedy so perfectly and I can't get over how genuinely terrifying Taika is in some scenes.

What I think is amazing about this film is how it explores the dogmatism of the Germans that chose become nazis out of blind loyalty. And JoJo, being a young kid was easily influenced, goes through the journey of realizing the flaw in that dogmatism and how his mother was raising him not only to do what was right, but to learn to do it for when she’s no longer with him. I also love how you watch the connection between him and Elsa and how they grow from being two estranged children with different cultural backgrounds to not only friends but to a brother-sister relationship. 🐇

Jojo wants Elsa to like ugly things because he sees himself as ugly at that point. I really love this movie, but one small detail I wish they had done different. The drawing at the end that made him realize he was wrong should have been made with the colors he had given her.

I can't say enough how good this movie is. You asked why H was being portrayed as almost likeable. It's because this entire movie is seen through the eyes of an indoctrinated child. The real genius in this movie is watching how JoJo's imaginary version of H changes throughout the movie as he begins to question all the bs he's been taught. Complete idolatry at the beginning to a look of real contempt as JoJo sits in front of an empty dinner plate while H gorges on unicorn. Unsure if anyone but Taika could have pulled this off

It is wonderful and ironic that Hitler was played by a Jewish man! There’s poetry in that. JoJo’s Hitler was his mind processing all of the propaganda that was being taught to all German youth. It was a child’s simple way of trying to reconcile what he was being taught and what he was learning from life and his mother. Such a great reaction. I’m so glad I found you! You’re such a sweetheart!

Since this story is fictional, I like to think that JoJo and Elsa might go stay with Yorki's family and at some point hopefully the dad comes back too.

Well done! I've watched a dozen reactions to this film and your recap is the first one to get every significant moment. Also, do not apologize for a genuine emotional response! This film is both extremely funny and powerfully moving! You got it! But PS spend a little more time on the actors, directing, etc.

The only other movie I know of that deals with Nazism in a similar, sarcastic way is The Producers, by Mel Brooks. Very different than this movie, but also aims to ridicule Nazism through humor. Every reaction I watch of Jojo Rabbit, when the blue butterfly appears I say to myself, "Here we go."
