Abuela Alma cannot help the way she is. Ever since she and Pedro led the people from their village, they have kind of been her responsibility. She was a very young widow with three babies to raise, but she is also the de facto leader of this town. A higher power granted her a miraculous gift in return for the fact Pedro sacrificed himself. That power created the encanto, a sanctuary for everyone, and Alma made a solemn vow to help the people of the town, to "earn" the miracle that was given to them, never realizing that they had already earned it with Pedro's life. But her good intention morphed into this HUGE responsibility, and she is living her life in fear that if the magic goes away, they will all be vulnerable to the outside violence again. When Mirabel didn't get her door and then Bruno disappeared immediately afterward, her faith was shaken and she is holding on tighter than ever.

I love how they made Mary a sympathetic character - it would have been so easy to write her off as hateful, but she was as imprisoned in that marriage as Stede was. Honestly the show does a great job of making clear that the true villains are the people upholding oppression and no one is irredeemable unless they choose not to be redeemed. The character depth is incredible

When that moonlight scene happened the fandom really perked up, like “…oh?” I swear 30 fics dropped on AO3 within hours of that episode airing.

Said it before, I’ll say it before- this is like a tragic comedy where two ppl propose marriage to each other and somehow end up breaking up. Aziraphale didn’t want to go to Heaven, even with the promotion, until the Metatron said he could restore Crowley and go together with him. I think the reason this tempted Aziraphale so much is exactly bc he knew what Crowley has been through and he wants his friend to have the opportunity to have a wrong righted, to have what was rightfully his restored to him. But he still hadn’t actually decided when he told Crowley. It wasn’t until Crowley issued an ultimatum- leave with me and never be able to return (like Gabriel and Bee) or go to Heaven and lose me. But as much as it goes against Crowley’s nature to become an angel again, it goes against Aziraphale’s to turn away those in need- in this case, Heaven and Earth. Just like what we saw last season when Aziraphale refused to abandon the earth, and when he refused to abandon Gabriel at the beginning of this one. Crowley stormed away from him both times as well. Another thing: it was obvious to the viewers that Crowley was trying to confess his feelings because we were privy to his point-of-view when he was having those talks with Nina and then with Nina and Maggie. But Aziraphale wasn’t. He just offered Crowley smth huge, working together on the same side to fix Heaven and protect the Earth, and Crowley rejected him. Crowley then interrupts himself and does not actually say anything different than he said last season- let’s run away together. Of course it’s going to be a no, again, and why should that break them when it didn’t before? Aziraphale has asked for help before, but he’s never actively begged Crowley. I suspect he feels just as rejected. Plus, he doesn’t understand how Crowley took what he said about the bookshop not lasting forever. The last time Aziraphale actually said “I forgive you” to Crowley was last season, when Crowley called him stupid. And in this season, Crowley called him an idiot before…assaulting him? Shocking him? Trying to tempt him? Aziraphale clearly is confused as hell by what’s happening and feels wounded by it- hence the tears. He didn’t expect anything like that (why would he?) and he seems to conclude that it was meant to be a hurtful follow-up to calling him an idiot. The “I forgive you” was not for Crowley’s love confession, bc Crowley did not actually make a love confession unless you A) knew the backstory behind his actions and B) were not an angel with no experience of kissing. The time in this season when Aziraphale last forgave Crowley (without actually saying so out loud) was when Crowley came back after initially refusing to help with Gabriel. At which point he did the apology dance where he admitted that Aziraphale was right, even though we know Crowley didn’t actually think so, he just came back bc he was concerned for Aziraphale. And from Aziraphale’s POV, he WAS right in the end. He not only saved Gabriel, but Gabriel changed and became a better person. Plus, Aziraphale was able to get Heaven and Hell to stop squabbling long enough to prevent a war. If Gabriel, one of the worst, most stubborn, most powerful angels, could change, why not Heaven itself? And why can’t Crowley have some faith in him? In what they could accomplish together? (From Azira’s POV) I really think the disgust on Aziraphale’s face after the kiss when he wiped his lips was real, btw; not bc he was disgusted by Crowley, but bc he was freaked out by kissing. He had the same reaction to eating for the first time. He had to get used to it before he liked it. And this was really not the best circumstance under which to get comfortable with another new bodily action. I don’t think either of them betrayed the other, but I think they both felt betrayed.

A bit interesting how Crowley shrinks down to a couple of inches, then grows to giant size, then goes back to his normal 6'1... and his clothes stay on him the whole time. (Damn... I mean, good.... )

My favorite thing in this episode is that, despite everything in the whole season leading up to it, Crowley and Aziraphale are basically useless by the time they actually get to the air base. Like, they give Adam a pep talk and that's almost the full extent of their "help" in like the entire season. The most useful thing either of them did in averting Armageddon was Crowley accidentally telling the nun the wrong room number eleven years earlier.

Never noticed the "Shirley you can't be serious" Airplane reference when I watched at the time. 😂

it's weird, i don't think percy excepted the guy to fall backwards and hit his head. he stopped laughing and even his smile went down a bit like 'oh--oh shit' he was actually starting to change for a TINY bit...

For whatever reason, while I watched season 1 as it released and loved it, I didn't get on Season 2 immediately, and in the meantime Fargo season 5 came out, I watched that and then I was VERY GLAD that I had this as a palate cleanser after seeing Jon Hamm's character in that 😰😱

Love your reaction! This episode and the previous are the most similar to the first season dynamics. Some notes. 1) this is the second instance of Ed mistaking screaming for laughter. The first time was in 1x6 right before his panic attack. It is a very common thing with people with trauma, as Ed has im loads. 2) the shark convo is Izzy trying to move on his way. It's also a nod to his abusive behavior to Ed in the first season and Ed's response of fighting back against his abuser. He is the own shark that bite his leg off. 3) the wear fine things well is so romantic. Also the little hand game is improv. These two are the perfect Ed and Stede. 4) fang is precious. 5) Stede's growth is him learning that he doesn't need to change himself. He doesn't feel like the captain, so he goes to Izzy, but of course that isn't what Stede needs in the end. Rather it's Stede's ability to read people and combine the two ways of piracy. He also goes to Izzy because he knows Izzy needs a thing to do. And one of Stede's best traits is recognizing what people need.

Steed needs Aziraphale here to do a magic trick. Save his suit! He should have pretended he burnt it. I hope he comes across it again someday. It is a crime for Ed to never see him in that suit.
