Wow... 6 months without paying the mortgage AND you don't tell your wife? On top of that, she says "I love you" after you finally come clean? She's a keeper. Good job on becoming debt free!

When I was a kid my family ended up homeless living on the Red River in a tent for 3 months because my deadbeat father did the same thing.. Now I'm debt free own 3 houses and have 2 college degrees at 40, growing up poor and abused was one of the greatest blessings for me.

He’s been touched by an angel. My husband would be in the dog house for a long time if he didn’t tell me that he wasn’t paying the mortgage, because I would be livid. But this is part of why I manage our finances in our marriage because my husband sucks with managing money, and he would be too prideful to tell me he messed up.

@MichaelBlocksom

Ann Korn people who sell their cars are still real people tackling debt. They do it because the cars weigh people down and kill you. When you free up a car payment you free up a lot of money to go to other debt.

that means 20,000 per year in interest if the average of the rate amounts to 10 %. And if he had a bad credit score (car loans) and a lot of it was on credit cards that may have been even more in interests that they were hemorrhaging. I also assume that her family helped out with some immediate money to avoid the foreclosure. Family loans _can_ be a good thing - a life saver if bad luck strikes or if they made one time stupid mistakes. The likely to costly house in the end helped them with equity (at least they could compensate for some of the interest that they lost needlessly). If he had managed financed prudently (low cost cars, frugal living) it might have been a good investment, the real estate prices have exploded in LA. Family loans (if ever needed) would work in my family, I once lent a sibling 3,000 k for 18 months (had a career change, had bought a condo not long ago, he had a decent paying job before, and did fall back on that when his new career did not work out for him. And he has always been very prudent with money. That runs in the family). So I got paid back in 2 installments, and did not have to remind him. I know that a relative got help when he lost his well paying job. 5 kids, stay at home mom, I guess they got an advance on his inheritance.

My wife and I have separate accounts and it has worked for us. I entered the marriage with roughly $40K in debt and was terrible with money. I read the Dave Ramsey books and watched financial videos on KZfaq and am only about $3K from being debt free. When I am debt free we will have 1 account. I've changed my habits for the better and now do our budget. When I pay off the rest of my debt we will already have a 6 month emergency fund which we saved together. Not everything has to be so clear cut.

Love all of it... The best is that their children are standing there listening to all of this. We owe it to our children to be open about finances. Owe. It. To. Them. Period. Full stop. -I don't agree with how we've, as a country, a planet, decided to create trade and currency and debt and hierarchy, but it's a fact of our existences and the next generation DESERVES to be prepared and armed with knowledge and skill. Especially when we expect them to make things better in the future. Talk to your kids about money. Get them involved at an early age. Press your schools to include money management in their curriculum from elementary on. Our country is in great debt and so are most citizens. And remember, there is joy in everything if you live in gratitude, even when you're struggling. 🌸💜

Can you guess the root of this backward movement? Has there been some sudden upheaval or loss in her life that she might be acting out against? Could this be her way of grieving something? It wouldn't excuse it, just something to consider. Everyone reacts to tragedy or major changes in their own way, and I wonder if this is hers somehow (knowing nothing about either of you).
